WoW and Guild Wars

Hey, any World of Warcraft and Guild Wars fans here? I'm a Guild Wars player m'self(mainly 'cause I can't afford monthly payments for WoW, so I didn't look into it), and was wondering whether anyone else played? As to World of, I was wondering if it's worth looking into, since a while back one of my characters over at the Battle Arena was noted for being like a WoW profession. Anyway... yea.

Indeed. Monthly fees disturb me, and I really don't need another MMO to fill my day, with. That's what girls are for.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

I used to play WoW, but eventually a realised that I was spending $20 a month to farm mobs. So I switched to Guild Wars, now I get to farm mobs for no charge beyond the initial one!

Actually, I find that Guild Wars is far less repetitive and boring then WoW, and has far better PvP and PvE balance. No longer do healers use two. friggin. skills. for the entire game, as they do in WoW.

Moved, corrected.

I'm a big fan of WoW. Play it in my spare time - loads. Nevre really got into any other MMO, nor have I played Guild Wars.

Going to get WoW soon. I like it but I don't play it all day. Normally when I have nothing to do I just play 3 game a day, why 3 ? Because I get bored less quickly than just 1 game.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

I'm going to get Guild Wars as soon as expansion #3 comes out and I can play as a dervish.

I've played in-game WoW on my friend's account up till about level 20 and I have to say if you have to pay for that, then HELL NO. It is most definitely not worth it. Don't take this the wrong way, that's my personal opinion with no offense to anyone who disagrees. If you're into it, then go ahead and play but you're just getting robbed. Guild Wars is just as good, with a second expansion coming by the time WoW's first comes, with definitely a lot more roles to play and cross-breeding classes.

If you want to save money, and gain fun, then go for Guild Wars.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

World of Warcraft is an awesome game. I absolutely love it, and I don't find it to be repetitive at all; there are hundreds of quests that are all different, the world itself is massive, customization is great because of all the armor and weapons... overall WoW I think is worth $15.00 a month (Buy your pre-paid cards from Walmart and save $10.00). They also have great dungeons, loads of different areas to explore, and you can just tell that a lot of effort was put into the making of the game. WoW is worth it; although I haven't played Guild Wars before, I won't be backing down from World of Warcraft for a long, long, long time.

Hey, drop me a PM when you do that! Though I won't be getting Nightfall for a while, we could still meet up in the later game.

Ok, little question: how does your level-up system work? Kill things and get experience, or are there quests that help out? I'm kinda wondering, 'cause I've been looking into it afor a while now and haven't really discovered much.

Part of the reason I got Guild Wars was because I didn't have to pay for stuff. Also, the fact that those instanced areas don't have to be fought over was a plus, since I jumped in from Star Wars Galaxies, where players were likely to have anything good farmed out by the time it respawned and you blinked. Anyway, GW is definitely worth at least looking into. If I had to choose between GW and WoW, from what I've seen and heard, I'd still choose GW. Probably just my tastes though.

P.S. Thanks Tsukasa for moving this for me.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

There are tons of quests to help move you along in leveling, and they're all different. I used to play a MMORPG called Priston Tale which didn't have any quests at all. That is the main reason why I stopped playing that and started playing WoW - basically if WoW didn't have all the quests they do, then I probably wouldn't still be playing it. They add flavour to the game instead of just having to grind the entire time. Plus, over half the time the quests require you to kill things, or collect items from killing things, so you still get experience for killing things plus the experience gained from the quest, so it's pretty helpful.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

If I can have shapeshift class, I'm happy. Does Guild Wars have one?

I like WoW... a lot, alas I've played it only a couple times from this trial thing.

Tuaren+Druid=ftw.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

Sorry Scoria... nope. No shapeshift class... you can have pets? [/ridiculous_attempt_to_appease] Other than that, you've pretty much just got your standard human things... along with magic of course.

Archer+Healer=for the actual win. Mwaha.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

Well, even though you have quests to help level you up, I wouldn't really call them fascinating by any degree. OK, granted I was one of those people who just went around and couldn't decide what class/race to be so I just ended up with 6-7 characters under level 20... but I think i still have a good idea what the quests are like throughout the game.

The quests that I did basically just rewarded me for grinding CERTAIN things instead of just anything. You grind such-and-such for X item and then return to the quest giver. Or you go to a cave or something that has X item in it and you explore around killing the creatues in the cave until you collect X number of items. Or you collect something from a boss creature in the cave. You mix and match these three basic components and change scenery/creatures and you have the basic formula for WoW Questing. Oh, and this may only be in the beginning, but when you're ready to move on they have you transport something to the next town for a quest.

So, Quests = Extra experience for killing certain monsters, and it's also your main source of money.

The PvP setup is... debated. Some really like it while others don't. A lot of times for instance you get Alliance players ganking much lower leveled people just for fun, even though you don't get any experience for doing so. Also people use rogues "Cheaply" or so it is said, I don't know I never did much PvP...

Anyway, I'd try WoW at a friends house before buying... True the first 20 levels can be kind of boring since you get introed to PvP at around 23, but if you can't stand the quest set-up or just the general feel or player make up (BTW, FYI Alliance is generally considered less mature than Horde, but they both have their respective idiots sometimes.) of the game, then I'd stick with GW.

BTW, since I guess I didn't really play much of the game, anyone can feel free to contest what i've said, i'm just giving my insight from the experience I had.

So can anyone describe their experiences with GW? I'm interested in it simply because of the idea of not paying anything othr than purchase price.

That's a very accurate way of describing the game.

This is what happened to me when I was a low level. I had high levels killing me over and over, and there was really no way to prevent it when I was just starting out. It was very boring for me and discouraged me from playing. That's only if you roll on a Player Versus Player (PVE) realm though. You are always able to roll on a Normal (PVE) server where you don't flag PVP unless you flag yourself manually.

If you can get a hand on just a copy of the game (you don't have to buy it, you can use a friend's JUST to install it), I could, or any of your friends that have any left, give you a free 10-day trial code if you want to try out the game.

I like the way it always gets updated I can't wait for the World PvP objectives and the expansion's looking amazing with more Battlegrounds, etc. Sure...the fee to play it's a rip-off but i dont care WoW rules! if you've played Warcraft 3 you have to get it.... its really fun!

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

I played WoW of at my friends house and I must say I was hugely disapointed, I didn't find why it was such a great game, the fact that a Lvl 60 can't kill a Lvl 60 monster is just retarded and the fact that you need like a party of like 30 to kill them. It makes no sense! The magic spells are a let down no excitement in them they've just used repeated animation, as well as the initial appearance of higher Lvl weapons they look lame.
Also I hate the fact that with some weapons as soon as you equip them they're with you for life.
Then you also got the fact that Monster can come into town and kill everyone, and that the priests are basically useless. Sure they can heal but they're too busy trying to save thier own arse.

The Highest Lvl is 60...lame...and I know with the expansion soon its gonna be 70...OMG 10 more lvls!

As I said I think the game is all talk and no banana.

As for guild wars I havent played it so, I cant comment on it.

EDIT: The most fun I had was jumping up and down and using the Dance Emote....wow, O and I guess it was funny when I jumped into the lava.

Re: WoW and Guild Wars

The quests in WoW are repetative. They're almost all 'fed-ex' or 'grind' quests. Essentially you're given an item that you have to give to someone else, or you have to farm a certain number of items.

Guild wars does have Fed-ex and (kinda) grind quests. However, the quests that give you the highest reward are completing the missions, which have cut scenes and are all different (albeit the difference is usually which mobs you end up killing.)

As for PvP, since it's regulated in GW you don't get ganked whenever you leave your territory.

Trust me, the quests in WoW are all next to identical, it's when I realized that that I stopped playing. They do make them seem diverse, but eventually you realize "Wait, this quest has me farming scorpions... How is it
