First Person or Third Person

Which type of shooter game do you prefer? Is it third person, with games like Conker's Live and Reloaded, Ratchet and Clank, and ect.? Or do you prefer First person shooters, like Halo, James Bond games, and the up coming Gears of War? I personally prefer third person shooters. I've played both Halo 2 and Conker's LAR, and I like Conker's better, but what do you prefer?

Re: First Person or Third Person

I like the ability to switch from both third-person to first person (no, really).

I guess it all depends. Some shooter games are more "suiting" to be third-person (like Ghost Recon, or Call of Duty, etc.). While others are more "suiting" be first-person. The one thing I like better about third-person is that you can see a better view of the area; but that takes away the fun on some games.

Either one is fine for me. I do sometimes find camera controls for third-person view to be slight annoying sometimes on a few games (whether the reaction time is slow, or any other reasons) though.

Re: First Person or Third Person

I'm terrible at Third person shooters. Any other type of game is fine like that, but I just can't stand shooters in third person.

Re: First Person or Third Person

Well, i personally don't have a preference. I can usually adapt to which ever one is to be used. Like RE4, took forever to get used to the TPS behind the shoulder action; used to playing GoldenEye and such. But, FPS are sometimes akward with the camera, as well as TPS. FPS usually don't envolve as much integration with the enviornment b/c you can only see your hands or feet if you look down. TPS on the other hand, gives sometimes better view and has more intergral parts of the enviornment wrapped with it(RE4 with the kicks, settting up ladders, etc.). And sorry for the RE4 references if someone doesn't like the gameplay or doesn't agree with me.

So yea, no preference really

Re: First Person or Third Person

I voted third person, but before I read the actual post. I didn't know that you were specifically talking about shooting games. I prefer first-person in most cases. But there's a few games that I like better in third-person. Star Wars: Battlefront, for example.

Re: First Person or Third Person

I prefer the ability to switch to either view. More action calls for third person, like Battlefront 1 and 2, while something a little more serious that requires more attention to detail makes me use first person view. Such as War Rock.

I prefer FPS's. They usually just involve you running around shooting things, and don't have puzzles and stuff, which is what I like in a shooter.

Re: First Person or Third Person

In order to have a good first person shooter the aiming system needs to be comfortable, but I enjoy playing arcade first person shooters at the movies.

Re: First Person or Third Person

Well, I don't know which one I like better... For one, I like Halo... But, on the other hand, I like GTA (Technically free-roaming, but most of the shooting is in third person.)

But, if you don't count GTA as third person, then I guess it would be first person for me.

Re: First Person or Third Person

Like a few others, I like to be able to switch between first- and third-person... it depends on a particular situation. I know it's not on the list, but for example, playing Resident Evil 4, albeit an amazing game, I kept wishing I could switch to first-person for a lot of the more intense shooting situations that needed aim precision (I would often run to try to not die or just say 'screw it' and throw a grenade or use a rocket launcher... fun, but copping out), but not all shooting or situations - sometimes you need to see a bigger perspective of the area and someone coming up from behind (you get that split second to react before you're getting choked to death).

Re: First Person or Third Person

EDIT-

Didn't read the opening post too well either

I don't know, third person works well if it's tactical shooting, like Winback and Metal Gear, but most third person shooters tend to have bad controls. So I'll say First Person.

First person.

Accuracy is hard in third person with a crap camera.

Re: First Person or Third Person

Third person usually gives it more of an adventure type feel. Not to mention looking through my own eyes, into someone elses vision is kinda awkward for me, And the third person thing never even usually managesd to capture that feel. So im third person all the way.

I Completely agree with everything this guy said. I'd like to add that the very first time I played RE4 gave me a bit of motion sickness. That was not a good deal. Thankfully, I grew immune to the tight swinging camera in a couple of minutes.

Overall, I like first person shooters better, but I can't imagine RE4 with a first person camera. It would be utter crap. Likewise, Halo would be utter crap with a third person camera. That's all.

What he said.

The thing about third-person shooters is that you tend to feel somewhat alienated from the action, because you're not your character. You just move him around and make him shoot things. In first-person shooters, you are the guy with the oversized gun, which creates a more immersing experience in my opinion.

Edit: Forgot to mention the other obvious plus-point for FPS; you will never, under any circumstances, have reason to complain about the camera getting stuck in weird places.

I disagree with that (except for the last thing). I think you get to see more action in TPS games. For one, in war games, you get to what's going on. You can see people dying, exploding, and bunches of other stuff all around you. In FPS games you can only see what directly in fron of you, which limits the action.
