Recommended RPG for Little Bros.

I have quite a few games for NES, SNES, and Game Boy, and my brothers are begging me to let them play one. I was thinking of an RPG, but I don't want to start them on something too hard. I'd like them to experience a good RPG, but I don't want it to backfire and have them never want to play RPGs again.

So anyway, what do you think might be a good starter RPG for kids under 10 years?

I'd say the Mario Rpg's. They can act as a very good introduction to the RPG genre as they give good introductions to how to play them and they are easy to pick up on.

Re: Recommended RPG for Little Bros.

There is no such thing as a hard RPG they all just take time.

For NES and SNES I'd recommend Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthboard, Tales of Phantasia or some of the Final Fantasies.

They are the best ones I can think of off the top of my head for NES, SNES and GB.

That's a good idea. I might do that one. I only worry about the action command system. It was hard enough for me, and I never even mastered it.

That's about all of them. Actually when I mean hard, I mean something that wouldn't have too many facts and battle strategies to learn.

Edit BTW: Hey Hazz, I love your timeline!

EARTHBOUND!?!?! That game is too hard for kids like that. (well, maybe most) Well, I say like, Paper Mario the thousand Year Door, or something like that would work.

Simple? How about Pokemon?

Nothing complicated at all, just leveling up and battling.

I agree, Pokemon is probably a good choice for gameboy...

If you have a game boy advance, it can get complicated, if you want it to. Effort points and such. Also, it ain't just battling in the Ruby/Sapphire games- There's beauty contests, as well.

Pokemon is good for people of all ages... Not too simple, not too complicated.

Re: Recommended RPG for Little Bros.

How about Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana? It's your typical, old-school rpg, and has a selection of cute characters, and a fairly symplistic battle system that builds up. But if you don't have a ps2..........

How about Skies of Arcadia? That's a pretty big RPG, but the battle system gets more complicated, the more you progress. There are a few....well....mature jokes (nothing too graphic, I don't think they'll understand).

My first real RPGs were the Golden Sun (I was 12) and Pokemon games (10 for Blue/Red), and they set me on the path to RPGs.

Hope this helps! Younger siblings are just as fussy about their games, as about their food. You can try saying "Open the tunnel for the RPG train! Choo, choo, choo!" Or you can just hold their noses, and hope they don't choke.

No, not many people ask me to babysit, as you have probably gathered.

Re: Recommended RPG for Little Bros.

Golden Sun is indeed a very excelent choice. And Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and Paper Mario 2 all stand for good introductions. But depending on their age, and if they feel stupid playing it or not, Pokemon would be the easiest choice. The Mario RPGs are simply all around better though.

Re: Recommended RPG for Little Bros.

Pokemon Blue was my first RPG, while Golden Sun was my first traditional RPG, and I love it! Actually, I almost gave them Pokemon Blue to play, but then I changed my mind. I thought it would be too hard. I don't remember a lot of in-game instructions. Then there's the tidious training.

I think I'll let them play Super Mario RPG. The action command system is the only thing I worry about, but then again, my seven year old brother beat Kirby's Dream Land 2 for the GB by himself, and my 9 year old brother has beaten Zelda: LA many times in the past couple of years. I think they'll be fine.

Thanks for your help!

I think Golden Sun is a good "My First Rpg". It was mine, after all!

So LinkZeldaGanon, you have picked Super Mario Rpg? I enjoyed Paper Mario, but Mario RPG didn't make it over in England. I hope it transforms your bro into an RPG fantatic like me! Hoo-yeah!

Re: Recommended RPG for Little Bros.

The Paper Mario's are a good choice. The battle system isn't complicated (there's...what, 4 stats. 5 counting badge points... 6 with star points), the battles focus mostly on good reflexes. Its something an 8 year old could handle.
