Question about Paper Mario 2...
Well, to comment on this, you probably have had to play the game, or did some serious research... And forgive me if this has already been discussed...
Anywho, I recently found out that there was a rather silly debate a while ago about an issue with the Japanese and English versions of Paper Mario 2 and the character Vivian. Now, the debate is, is that in the Japanese version, the character 'Vivian' was male, but pretending to be female. The debate against this is that they called her 'man' and poked fun of her because they thought she was inferior/wasn't womanly. In the English version, she is female, but called ugly/inferior. The English one is the one I'm used to. Firstly, her bodily aspects look feminine. Secondly, she acts feminine. Now, the ultimate question about this character is- Is she male, female, or is both considered canon? Is 'male' accepted as canon in Japan or 'female called male' accepted; whereas in the English version 'female' is canon? Anyway, this can be closed after someone sheds some light on what is 'canon' here... The reason I'm asking is so I can have a good idea of who the character is, and what is true and not. ![]() Last edited by Andross; 07-15-2006 at 07:15 PM. |

Re: Question about Paper Mario 2...
I didn't know that...
I don't really have anything to add, except to bring up Birdo. Isn't Birdo a guy who thinks he's a girl? Somehow I remember something like that in the instruction booklet for SMB2, but I don't have it, so I can't check. It's gross thinking about it, anyway. Wonder why Nintendo did it.

Re: Question about Paper Mario 2...
NEWSFLASH! Silppy IS a MALE!
In this months issue of Nintendo power, it showed a picture of Slippy and a female looking frog and they had hearts over them. Back on task, I had never heard that before. I'm, sure they changed that so in the english version people wouldn't think that she/he was trans. That's my addition.

And Birdo lays eggs...so.. It's been awhile since I've played, but wasn't there some Birdos in SMB2 that didn't have ribbons that shot fireballs? Perhaps those would be considered the male?

Re: Question about Paper Mario 2...
Maybe they were not allowed to show homosexual characters in N.A.? Just a thought......
And I DID think Slippy was a girl, because he sounded too girlyish, but now learned something today! As for Birdro, laying eggs seems reasonable of being a girl....... And I think Vivian is the cutest Mario character here, so I was scared to death about this thread.......AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Re: Question about Paper Mario 2...
Well, I always thought of Slippy as a girl... Until Adventures came out. That seemed to show a bit more of Slippy's personality and actions...
Anyway, I am hoping that the debate "Vivian was called man to insult her womanliness" is true; or else the Engilsh version of Vivian being accepted as canon. Has Nintendo commented on this yet? |

In this case, it's a video game. It doesn't have to make sense.

Re: Question about Paper Mario 2...
The thing with birdo, in the American instruction booklet for mario 2 it stated that Birdo was a guy. But in Japan the character has always been refered to as female. As for Yoshi I always assumed that that egg laying was just something true for all the species. Perhaps the species produces asexually and the main yoshi just happens to have more male hormones than female ones. Now back to Vivian, perhaps calling her man (i.e. mannish) is the same as calling her ugly. If not I'll just put it down to WTHIWWJP. If I say tenticle you should be able to figure out the acronym
