For you Video Game Sales Enthusiasts

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...tendo_GameCube

There is a terrific source for you. Quite interesting. I don't know if this source is reliable or not, but most of it seems to be accurate. Then again, I could have sworn I read that Super Metroid, for example, sold 4 million copies, and according to this . . . it didn't even sell 2 million.

Top 20 Non-bundled games of all time:

Quote:
* Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES - 17.28 million)
* Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2 - 14.36 million)
* Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2 - 13.70 million)
* Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2 - 13.30 million)
* Super Mario 64 (N64 - 11.62 million)
* Grand Theft Auto III (PS2 - 11.45 million)
* Gran Turismo (PS1 - 10.84 million)
* Super Mario All-Stars (SNES - 11.55 million) [33]
* Mario Kart 64 (N64 - 9.87 million)
* Final Fantasy VII (PS1 - 9.72 million)
* Gran Turismo 2 (PS1 - 9.34 million)
* GoldenEye 007 (N64 - 8.09 million)
* Final Fantasy VIII (PS1 - 7.86 million)
* Final Fantasy X (PS2 - 7.75 million)
* The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64 - 7.6 million)
* Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES - 7.46 million)
* Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (PS1 - 7.28 million)
* Pac-Man (7 million), tied with Mortal Kombat (7 million)
* Crash Bandicoot 3 (PS1 - 6.97 million)
Bundled Games

Quote:
* Super Mario Bros. (NES - 40.24 million)
* Duck Hunt (NES - 28.31 million)
* Super Mario World (SNES - 20.60 million)
* Super Mario 64 (N64 - 11.62 million)
* Mario Kart 64 (N64 - 9.87 million)
* Donkey Kong Country (SNES - 9.30 million)
* Super Mario Kart (SNES - 8.76 million)
* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64 - 7.60 million)
* Halo 2 (Xbox - 7.42 million)
* The Legend of Zelda (NES - 6.51 million)
* Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox - 6.29 million)
* Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC - 6.05 million)
Sales by franchise

Quote:
* Mario series (188 million)
* Pokémon (143 million)
* Final Fantasy (60.9 million)
* Grand Theft Auto (48.4 million)
* The Legend of Zelda series (47 million)
* Tetris (44.1 million)
* Donkey Kong (44 million)
* Gran Turismo (43.7 million)
* Command & Conquer series (35 million)
* Dragon Quest (35.5 million)
* Crash Bandicoot (33.4 million)
* Mario Kart (33.4 million)
* Sonic the Hedgehog series (31.9 million)
* Resident Evil (30 million) [34]
* Madden NFL (30 million) [35]
* The Sims (28 million)
* Tomb Raider (28 million) [36]
* Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (27.8 million) [37]
* Street Fighter (27 million) [38]
* Mega Man (24 million) [39]
* Tekken (22.2 million)
* Mortal Kombat (21 million) [40]
* Kirby (20.9 million)
* FIFA series (20 million) [41]
* Metal Gear (17 million)
* Halo (13.6 million)
* Harry Potter (13.2 million)
* Metroid series (12.3 million)
* Super Smash Bros. series (11.6 million)
Hm . . . I'm beginning to doubt the validity of some of these numbers. Some of them do indeed look familiar and accurate, but again, consider the Metroid franchise. According to franchise sales, it has sold 12.3 million copies in all, but a brief analysis says that, according to the sales of the individual games, this can't be possible.

So some of the numbers may be off, but this is generally accurate and relatively up to date.

Now for some Hardware numbers:

Quote:
# Sega Master System: 12 Million
# Nintendo Entertainment System: 62 Million
Quote:
* Sega Game Gear 9 Million
* Nintendo Game Boy 119 Million
Quote:
# Sega Mega Drive: 35 Million
# Super Nintendo: 49 Million
Quote:
# Sega Saturn: 9 Million
# Nintendo 64: 33 Million
# Sony PlayStation: 100 Million
Quote:
* Sega Dreamcast: 11 Million
* Sony PlayStation 2: 100 Million
* Nintendo GameCube: 20.61 Million [4]
* Microsoft Xbox: 23 Million
Quote:
* Nintendo Game Boy Advance: 74.25 million units sold [4]
* Nintendo DS: 14.43 Million units sold [4]
* Sony PSP: 13 million units shipped

Note: Sony doesn't release the number of systems sold, only the number of systems shipped to retailers, Nintendo's sales figures are of systems sold. So the DS's sitting on shelves at Gamespot aren't included in the total number sold, however the PSP units shipped includes the total number sold and the systems sitting on the shelf.
Any thoughts? Feel free to add your own numbers if you wish.

This is an interesting thread, thanks for that. Sorry, I don't know what I can say to contribute to the thread. ^^

Re: For you Video Game Sales Enthusiasts

This is one f the reasons I like Wikipedia. You can get so much information there.

Those lists were mostly what I excepted. I knew Mario was a popular character, but I didn't know his games were so far ahead of everything else.

Playstation has been doing well since they entered the gaming industry and Nintendo looks like it's been going down every generation. Maybe the Nintendo Revolution can change that.

Re: For you Video Game Sales Enthusiasts

I find the list hard to believe to be 100% true.

The reasons why?

- Resident Evil 4 (1.31 million) I really seem to believe this was more like 4 million, edit: found a source with number for FEB 06: It has been almost 13 months since Capcom released Resident Evil 4 essentially reinventing their once-muddled franchise by making a sequel that may surpass even the original, and certainly pulled off an incredible feat by becoming both a critical darling and a huge seller. In fact, according to Capcom, Resident Evil 4 sold over 3 million copies since its release - quite an amazing feat. So not quite 4 million but more than the 1.31 millions suggested

-Civilization IV (1.2 million)
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1.04 million)
Civilization IV (1 million) [21]
Battlefield 2 (1 million) [22]

Civ 4 twice in list...

Just as Warcraft 2, which both numbers seem too low for me.

Warcraft II (1 million) [25]
Warcraft II (3 million) [11]

-Sims 2
The Sims 2 (4.5 million) [7]
Seems highly unlikely

-Riven (1 million) [23] I know this is false

- Numbers don't add up...

Wikipedia it is a great source but because it can be added by everyone it isn't always very reliable. Heck internet is one of the least reliable sources there is.
