SNES games for DS

Another thought that has JUST occured to me is that Nintendo could bring back snes classics to DS without having to do much at all except for adding a touchscreen mode.

First off the controls are practically set and don't need a single change. The touchscreen could just be used as a status screen.
The 128mb cartridges that DS is currently using..honestly can hold more than 100 snes games.Games would also come in plenty and bring back classics for people not born in those times not to mention the games would be pretty cheap.
The Gameboy Advance has made a start with NES but it can't do SNES.So what do you guys think? Will Nintendo release SNES games for DS?They made a good start to a GBA NES collection but now that DS is "Now" maybe Nintendo should think quick and release a HUGE ammount of classics for DS.

Re: SNES games for DS

Actually, a lot of them were already released a la GBA. I would like to see Super Mario RPG: The Seven Stars, though, as I never got a chance to enjoy it on SNES.

I'd like to plat that too. I don't believe it was released in Europe and even if it was I was born during the end of the SNES days.

I would like to see some of the SNES games re-released but, I would then have to buy a DS in order to play them because you can't always play demo games at the store across the street.

No. That's incorrect. The GBA can do pretty much anything the SNES can do (restraints from being a portable) and more in pretty much every single way except resolution, which is a problem that all portables suffer. For one, the SNES was a 16-bit system, and the GBA is a 32-bit system.

And as already mentioned, the GBA already saw most of the SNES classics rereleased, what with all the Super Mario games, Tales of Phantasia, Metroid Zero Mission (remake, I know, of a NES game), Final Fantasy IV-VI, and countless others.

I've said this many times though. The GBA's resolution sucks. I really wish that they would bring the few remaining Final Fantasy rereleases to the DS instead, since the resolution would do the games much better justice than the scaled down stuff we've seen in all the GBA ports and remakes. The DS's resolution isn't much better, but the GBA is really starting to show it's age in that area, in an era of ever increasing resolutions, whether it be HD televisions, new super high resolution computer moniters, or the PSP's semi-astounding portable resolution. (The only bad part about the PSP's res is that it's still under standard definition TV res, making games not being able to obtian console like graphics, between that and the underclocked GPU. (Though PSX games on the PSP still look astounding when ported. The PSX is a good example of what can still be done even with lower resolutions.))

Frankly though, that isn't going to happen. Developers can easily bring a game to the GBA for a lower price, and a lot less programming. A lot of fans, particularly in the case of Final Fantasy, really worry that if they brought the games to the DS instead, the developers would be too tempted to make us of the DS's "unique" features in some way, thereby currupting their beloved Final Fantasy. And I have to somewhat agree with them. Look at what Final Fantasy III has become on it's transition to the DS. Online play, 3D graphics, new character models and story elements-it's like a completly different animal. Sure it would be great for the remakes to be on the DS, but that fear might not leave the back of your mind.

And don't forget the ALttP port, hellooo this is a Zelda forum (pretty hard to miss). *Throws two cents into Mr. Wonderful's hat*

Re: SNES games for DS

I would like the ability to transfer Virtual Console games from a Revolution, though I know DS wouldn't do that smoothly. The low resolution is an issue. But a future portable though...

Doesn't PSP already have higher resolution than most PS1 games? Was there any game console that actually reached SDTV resolution? The lack of buttons seems like a bigger issue.

Perhaps you misunderstood me. I was saying how the PSP at least had a higher resolution than PSX games.

And yes, consoles this generation reached SDTV resolution, and even higher, with EDTV (Progressive Scan-480p).

Re: SNES games for DS

Perhaps I did.
And sorry I made a little typo back there, with "console" I was refering to PS1. I know they even introduced HD support this generation.

I'm quite sure Nintendo can work itself around that. How many games can you think of that really needed the X/Y buttons? ALttP didn't need it (there's one example, I'm sure there are others). Didn't Super Mario World, Yoshi Island, and Mario Kart need the X/Y buttons? If they did, just take a look at their GBA ports, they obviously worked around it. Additional buttons didn't become a necessity until the N64 arrived.
