Elements (Not a game)

After playing so many different games, such as World of Warcraft, Zelda, Legend of the Dragoon, etc..., I have seen that not everybody regards elements with the same opinions. No, I do not mean oxygen and carbon for those of you with your nose stuck in the text books, what I mean is fire, earth, wind, and not just those. I would like to know what everybody thinks the elements are and if you'd like, which ones would have an advantage over the other? I'll go first.

Fire-Advantages over Water and Wind_Disadvantages against Water and Wind

Water(Ice)-Advantages over Fire and Earth_Disadvantages against Fire and Electricity

Wind-Advantages over Fire_Disadvantages against Metal and Fire

Earth-Advantages over Electricity_Disadvantages against Water, Metal, and Wind

Light-Advantages over Shadow_Disadvantage against Shadow

Shadow-Advantages over Light_Disadvantage against Light

Metal-Advantages over Earth_Disadvantages aginast Electricity

Electricity-Advantages over Metal and Water_Disadvantages against Earth

Re: Elements (Not a game)

This should've gone into chitchat I think...

Aah, another element thread. I remember the last one with all the real life elements being thrown in, carbon, h2o, it was funny.

Well there always seems to be a different take on the elements no matter what game you're playing. Though msot of the time things stick to the usual cycle, sometimes there are far different views, I've never seen metal used before though...

This is about games, not just chit-chat...

What do you think though, Scoria? I would like to hear your list of so called "game elements." That's one of the biggest things that has always bothered me about Zelda. They have these perfect six elements, and then there is a seventh sage of I presume time or destiny, in referrence to OOT, and then they throw in wind for TWW. But, that's getting off topic, so I'll leave it at that for now.

Re: Elements (Not a game)

Wind. I'm pretty sure that would have disadvantages over heavy objects, e.g. Metal, Earth.

The two categories I see are:

1. Wind, water, fire, earth. I think they were the four elements of alchemy.

2. Ice, fire, lightning. The power trio. They get used in games like Final Fantasy and stuff.

The group I made up, sort of:

Lightning: Sub-elements of light and spirit
Ice: Sub-elements of water and wind:
Fire: Sub-elements of earth and darkness

That pretty much covers my elements. It also works like this: A lightning element user would be naturally good at lightning, and then be able to learn lightning's sub-elements, as well as fire and ice, with a bit of work. The sub-elements of ice and fire would take a bit more work to master. This works the same with the other two main elements.

Re: Elements (Not a game)

Oooohie, I love talking elements. My favorites are water, wood, light and ice.

This is the set that I have seen most often in games. Bascially, an element does more damage against it's opposite, and less against itself.

Fire - Water
Earth - Wind
Light - Darkness

It is odd however, that in games, light is feminine, and darkness masculine. In Yin and Yang, and Wicca, it is the opposite. Light is masculine, energetic and focused, and darkness is comforting, restful and calm. Light, fire and air are considered powers of Yang, and water, earth and darkness are forces of yin. Shadow Hearts Covenant seemed to use this to seperate these elements into different sides of the Graveyard, and in Tales of the Abyss, it seems only yin elements worktoegher, and yang elements only are compatible with yang.

In my game, I hope to use these elements, and I wonder if you agree with the match ups:

Fire - Water
Wood - Earth
Thunder - Air
Light - Darkness

Or do you think I should remove Thunder and put time instead? (Chrono was a cool element in Baten Kaitos.)

Oh Scoria, in Unlimited Saga, they used the Chinese Yin and Yang elements (Fire, water, wood, earth and metal.) I just consider metal is earth though.

I hope to write more on this topic!

Re: Elements (Not a game)

Wood is an interesteing thought. I never really considered it an element, or maybe closely related with earth??? Anyways, I also was considering your matching. Thunder with air seems like it could work, but time and air and wood and earth don't seem too much like they have a stable relation ship with each other, especially the previous. Thanks for your suggestions though, they are much appreciated!

Re: Elements (Not a game)

The Elements of Magic (as borrowed from http://www.mutedfaith.com/quiz/r4.htm):

Life--the magic of loyalty and love; bred from compassion. Takes characteristics of all other elements: the ability to purge like fire, the breath of life from the air/wind, nourishment from the earth and from water. Its personality: duty and selflessness; loneliness and detachment.

Air--the magic of versatility and creativity; bred from a free spirit. Personality: creativity and playfulness; spiteful and noncommittal.

Fire--the magic of fury; bred from desire. Personality: impulsiveness and untamed emotions; ill-tempered, strong-willed/stubborn, and often illogical.

Water--the magic of fulfillment; bred from change. Personality: introverted, introspective, and open-minded; manipulative and unresponsive.

Earth--the magic of justice; bred from exposure. Personality: calm, rarely judgmental, and strongly ethical; logical and solid in opinion.

Spirit--the magic of understanding; bred from observation. Personality: knowledgable, wise, sound in judgment; misunderstood.

Void--the magic of difference; bred from isolation. Personality: chaotic, vibrant, open to new possibilities; contemptuous and self-righteous.

Illusion--the magic of deception; bred from contempt. Personality: deceptive, self-centered, and insightful; attention-grabbing and false.

Time--the magic of foresight; bred from experience. Personality: prophetic; detached, unemotional, unaccepting of other viewpoints due to your own view of the bigger picture.

The Elements

Interesting thread. A lot of different elements are used in games that I have seen thus far. As for what they are weak against and strongest against and or with is quite complicated. Though, from the games I have played, I know the elements of light, earth, fire, water, spirit, darkness, ice, wind, chronos/ time, life, metal, thunder/ electricity, wood, illusions and air. Most of them are sub-elements and I know there are more elements than just the ones I listed, but the other ones I know of, I have not seen in games. (FYI: Strongest with- what elements does it work with best
Weak against- what elements they are weak against
Strongest against- what elements don't affect them much)

Light~ The element of purity. This element is the element of which keeps the world in balance between darkness and light.
Strongest with- Spirit, Life
Weak against- Darkness
Strongest against- Life

Earth~ The simple and more purest element. This keeps the world, the land from falling apart. This is the life source of plants.
Strongest with- Water, Ice
Weak against- Metal, Thunder/ electricity
Strongest against- Ice, Water

Fire~ The most destructive element. The raging fire can burn anything it touches, the wild element that is mostly untamed.
Strongest with- Wind, Air
Weak against- Water, Ice
Strongest against- Air

Water~ The most calmest element. Cool, calm and collected, this element can burst out into powerful energy out of the blue.
Strongest with- Earth, Ice
Weak against- Thunder/ electricity, Metal, Wood
Strongest against- Earth

Spirit~ The souls that keep human beings alive. The spirits of the dead and the living are controled under this element.
Strongest with- Life, Time, Light
Weak against- Wind, Air, Illusion
Strongest against- Time

Darkness~ The opposite of light. This helps keep the world in place bewteen light and dark. This is one of the few dangerous elements, and one of the two darkest elements.
Strongest with- Chronos/ Time
Weak against- Light, Life
Strongest against- Chronos/ time

Ice~ The cold element of when water freezes over. This element is a sub-element, but used when it's needed most.
Strongest with- Metal, Water, Earth
Weak against- Fire, Wood
Strongest against- Water

Wind~ The element of the winds that blow along the face of the Earth. A calm yet dangerous element wind is.
Strongest with- Fire, Illusion, Thunder/ electricity, Air
Weak against- Chronos/ Time, Metal
Strongest against- Fire

Chronos/ Time~ The element of which keeps track of time of life and lives. This element is power and a dangerous to be able to control.
Strongest with- Darkness, Life
Weak against- Wind, Thunder/ electricity
Strongest against- Life

Life~ The essence of which new people/ beings are created. This element is one of the few purest and simplist elements known.
Strongest with- Light, Spirit, Chronos/ time
Weak against- Darkness, Ice
Strongest against- Spirit

Metal~ The element of which is created by the Earth over time. However, this element is unique and is a sub-element which most people don't know about.
Strongest with- Ice, Water, Earth
Weak against- Thunder/ electricity, Chronos/ time, Air
Strongest against- Ice

Wood~ Like Earth, Wood is the life source for all wood like things.
Strongest with- Air, Wind
Weak against- Fire, Chronos/ time
Strongest against- Earth

Air~ The air we breathe is the element of air. Much like Wind, however, this element is different in some ways.
Strongest with- Wind, Fire
Weak against- Fire, Illusion, Ice
Strongest against- Wind

Illusions~ The element that can create a fake image of a real thing, living or non-living. This element is one of the most confusing ones of all.
Strongest with- Life, Water, Ice
Weak against- Chronos/ Time, Darkness, Air
Strongest against- Life

This is only what I believe and think. Others have their own opinions and they can correct me if they don't agree with me on this.

Re: Elements (Not a game)

Oh yeah, in the classical four elements (air, fire, water and earth), there is actually a fifth element. This is commonly considered to be spirit, and is considedered to be seperate from the other four. In Latin (or Greek, I can't remember, but the Greeks I believe, were the first to classify these four elements), it is known as Aither, (or Ether, I think), and in Sanskrit, it is called Akasha. I thought Akasha was such a cool word, I chose it to be the name for Magic in Fata Morgana.

I think Tales of Legendia had an odd element system. Wind was left out in favour of lightning, and light and water were merged into "Sea" element. Also darkness was renamed "Curse." Curse and Sea were opposites, curse being evil and Sea being holy. I guess this is becasue the sea in ToL played a big part in the story.
