Disney Online will unveil the first images and a playable version of the never-before-seen Pirates of the Caribbean Online game at E3 2006. This massively multiplayer online role-playing game, slated for release in 2007, is based on the film franchise and will allow players to experience the world captured on screen. In the game, players will interact with Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and other characters made popular in the movie franchise, as they embark on exciting quests in search of treasure and notoriety.
Capturing the high seas adventures found in both Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, players embark on quests for adventure and treasure in an effort to become the Caribbean’s most legendary pirate. Featuring hundreds of customization options, players create and customize their own pirate, form a crew, and set sail on the high seas. Along the way they learn skills and tactics from the notorious Jack Sparrow, helping them forge alliances, hunt for buried treasure, battle evil undead forces and face off against known enemies from the movie franchise.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online is in development by the Walt Disney Internet Group’s VR Studio, creators of the Disney’s Toontown Online, the industry’s first MMORPG designed for kids and families. The game is being developed to appeal to a broad audience from teens to adults and will be available for a monthly subscription fee. This online game looks interesting. I'm not a HUGE pirate of the Caribbean fan, but I know a whole lot of people who are (I wonder how much this game will appeal to the public?). It would be interesting to see Disney make a more "mature" online game. Defiantly something I'll want to try out. I don't like the fact that you have to pay a monthly subscription fee...
Personally, I think that MMORPG's are just like any other fad and will have there time in the sun. Unlike any game fad before them though, not only is the gaming industry making money off of the game itself, but in most cases are getting more money for the monthly fees that are attached, but what ever. I agree, I think that if pirates of the Carribean became an MMORPG it would be good. I don't think that disney knows what its in for trying set this up though, thats all I got to say on this matter.
While MMORPG's are total money schemes, they do offer some great gameplay, and an incredible replay value. It's fun, and while it's pricey, most of the time it's worth it.
