Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
Resident Evil Deadly Silence
It's funny how I wasn't following the development of this game at all or had any idea of what the release date was, but still managed to get a copy on the first day (Feb. 14) due to a fortuitous surf-session. Despite being a big RE fan, I've never played the original Resident Evil for PlayStation, so this game is a godsend. It isn't perfect, I'd give it a 7.9, but damn those FMVs and voice acting are the funniest stuff ever. All DS fans should give it a spin. Use this thread for talking about the game. Sorry this thread isn't worded better I need to go to my next class!

Re: Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
I just got it yesterday I would have got it on the on the relese day but i thought it came out the 28th. Anyway I haven't had that much time to play it but I think it is really good. I have played the original Resident Evil for Gamecube though. I really like the knife fights with the touch screen.

Re: Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
Ahh, I'm happy to have gotten RE;DS. The biggest improvement gameplay wise, is the fact that you can now sheath and exert your knife, like in RE4. I swear that I've never used the knive in the original RE more that once, now I use it all the time and it's great for conserving ammunition.(Or for taking a few swiped at a downed enemy.)
Also, the load times are almost non-existent, givin the fact that they add the door/stairs/elevator animations anyways, but you can skip those.(Same with the "all great", but cheesy FMV's) The added smoothness and redone lighting, really made this game shine even more. Though, there are a few rooms that come to my mind, that seem a little grainy. But, still overall, the game looks/feels/ and plays well. Overall, this game stays to the original, mind the Rebirth mode with the changed/added puzzles, and the music is (Mostly) true to the last note. The random knife fights didn't bedazzle me much, but they where a fresh welcome to a game that can get tedious with running back and forth... So, overall, I will give this game a rather decent score... Gameplay: 8 (+True to the original / -The type of controle might turn others off.) Graphics: 9 (+Well done cross-over graphics with even more sprites added in / -Some instances of granyness pressent.) Sound: 10 (+Same great music that is nostalgic to RE fans / -Personal preference if you don't like the music, I guess... Might be Some instances of a lesser quality sounding songs.) Value: 9 (+Well worth the money to get the Rebirth/Original mode with Chris/Jill, unlockable features with game completion, Extra mini-game mode, and the Multi-Cart WiFi play. / - Hmmm, well, not sure here... Replayability: 8.5 (+Quite addictive to try to unlock everthing, with the different setting present in Chris/Jill's Rebirth and Original modes. / -Yet this might cause people to get turned off, at the fact that you're playing through the whole Mansion/Gard House/Laboratory again...) Grand Total 8.9 Every Resident Evil fan, who has played and loved the original, should indeed pick this game up. I'm sure that you would enjoy it. : )

Re: Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
Because the REmake changed some stuff that should not have been changed. The zombies were too powerful, for one. I would rather face three easy zombies than face one harder zombie. They took too many bullets to beat in REmake.
The Crimson Heads are another one. They just dont make sense. If you knew that the only way to prevent zombies from becoming Crimson Heads was to destroy the head, wouldn't you just take your boot and stomp them? The Crimson Heads were cool, they were scary and all, but they didn't make sense. I would rather have the game force you to take on some of them (like the one in the casket), rather than zombies becoming them. SPOILERS Also, they had the chance to include an ending where all four survivors live...but they didn't. Who knows why... They took out the automatic shotgun decapitation........bad move. The automatic shotgun decap is as much RE as murderous humanoids are. I'm not saying the REmake isn't a good game, but it doesn't even compare to the original. It has the automatic shotgun decap, better music, better zombies, tough Hunters that can kill you in a few hits if you are not careful, and, of course, the corny love-it-or-hate it acting, that puts you in the mood. That's why Resident Evil Deadly Silence, a portable version of the original with bonus features, is my favorite game ever.

Re: Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
You may like the original more, but I think it feels like a dated, cheap B-horror movie. When you compare it to games like Resident Evil 4 (unfair, I know) it loses any and all atmosphere. Walt Disney created scarier things than Resident Evil on the Playstation. The remake is so much more atmospheric than the original, though it still has some of the same problems in the control and design department.

Re: Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
Here's my review for it I wrote for another website.
Game: Resident Evil: Deadly Silence System: Nintendo DS Release Date: February 7, 2006 ESRB Rating: M Publisher: Capcom Anyway, lets talk about the game. More or less, it’s a direct port of the 1996 survival horror classic with a few modifications to the control scheme (ability to attack with the knife by holding down the L button, 180 degree turn around). You can of course, play the original one in its almost intact form (the only difference is the updated control scheme layout). But what makes package unique is to play the new rebirth mode, which changes the enemy layout of the mansion, adds new bosses and action sequences (knife fights with the stylus) and adds new puzzles that involve the touch screen and the microphone. Overall, this mode is pretty stable and adds a somewhat newer flavor on this aged, classic game. Since the enemy placement is different and even if you have played the first one, this mode will still scare the hell out of you. Anyway, lets find out what I thought of some of the key components of the game: Gameplay: Besides the few modifications that Capcom has added, the gameplay is identical to all those in the series. To move forward, you hold up on the D pad at all times, even when the camera panels. Some people will complain about the tank-likeness of the controls, but I for some reason like them, since I’ve been playing them for years. Either you’ll get over the controls or you’ll hate them. 8/10 Graphics: Exactly identical to those on the PlayStation, though some of the quality is lost in the transition to a smaller screen. Also, the CG sequences in this version are very grainy, almost to a point where you can’t tell what is going on. Overall, they’re decent, but I’d like to see a slightly updated version of the game (at least new character models) 6/10 Sound: From the god-awful voice acting to the real action cut scenes, the game keeps the cheesy, awesome voice acting from the first one for better or for worse. Also, the creepy ambient score of the mansion is back and as creepy as ever. The only real complaint is that I think they could have redone some of the sound effects (bullet sounds mainly), but it’s not that big of a deal. An instant classic in this area. 9/10 Scare Factor: Though dated, this game has the potential to scare the hell out of you. Though for some parts, it really all depends if you’ve played this game or not. If you’re playing the classic version and have already have played the game, you won’t find this game that scary. Though on Rebirth mode, enemies are rearranged and added, which scared me several times. Overall, this game has the potential to scare the hell out of you, though its not that often (Note the scare are more of ‘boo!’ scares rather than a lingering layer of dread like the Remake of the game on the GameCube had *man that’s a scary game*) 4/10 Fun Factor: I found this game very fun overall. Overall, this game (The original PS version) is probably one of my favorite games of all time, so it’s no surprise that I would be immensely entertained with this version. Plus, with the new rebirth mode the classic version of the game, and a whole slew of unlockables (I’m working on my sub 2 hour run), this game will last a while if you want it to. 10/10 Overall: Take one of the greatest games of all time, shrink it down for the DS and add a whole bunch of new features, and you still have a solid package worth your $35. Not only is it one of the most fun games out there (my opinion strictly, since many would disagree) it also has some of the worst voice work and acting ever to appear in a game. Another reason why this game is a classic. Surprisingly, this game has stood the test of time and is still as much fun as it was 10 years ago. Weighted Rating: (7.4/10) Non-Weighted Rating: (8.75/10) Last edited by Haku; 02-21-2006 at 08:25 PM. |

And RE: DS manages to add on more to an already superb game. Namely, stumbling zombies, and first-person knife fights, and more, or so I hear.

Also, you do know that they sharppened up the character models, slightly? They even added more frames, to what would be some originaly clunky looking characters... GameSpot: Quote:

Re: Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
Judging by Greg Kasavin's review at Gamespot, it sounds like a good game, but nothing truly incredible. He's usually right-on with his ratings, so I still have a nice out-look on RE DS. It certainly looks like fun, and the multiplayer mode "Race" mode sounds like it'd be a blast. Too bad the co-op sounds so mediocre though...
Ah, whatever. If anything, I'm just gonna grab a copy of the REmake for Gamecube to play the original. But, DS still sounds good, and it's a solid title for the DS to have, being the first mature game and all, and using the dual-screens pretty well. |

Re: Resident Evil Deadly Silence (DS)
I own the REmake but couldn't get into it because it's so difficult, unfair, and annoying. I HATE YOU CRIMSON HEADS. I really want to beat it, so maybe I'll swallow my pride and play it on EASY mode, but I don't want to.
The original RE and the DS version of it is just a lot more fun than the REmake to me. Still, RE2 pwns all.
