What? Why are you looking at me?
How much did you play of it? It's actually really good. Seriously, if you didn't play all that much of it, give it a shot again. The Sphere Grid is very fun, if your smart enough to work it (and you are, in case you're wondering), and the story isn't half bad.
Well, you said not to list distant future games, but why not games from the past? Let's focus on some PSX RPGs.
FFVII - IX (I know you didn't finish 7, so get it and finish it. I can say from experience that IX is fun, though I can't say for sure on VIII. It's worth a try, though)
FF Tactics (WAY better than FFTA)
Chrono Cross (Sequel to 2nd best RPG (or video game, IMO) of all time. Hardly related to it at all, but still great, though in a completely different way)
Vagrant Story (Critically acclaimed as a masterpiece, but undermarketed, and overlooked)
Xenogears (Personally, I plan on waiting until they make the remake of it down the road. Of course, that won't be for quite a while, as it's supposedly episode 5 of 6, so I believe)
Star Ocean 2 (Haven't played it, but I trust that it's good and I plan on getting to it eventually)
Suikoden 1 and 2 (Supposed to be excellent. Play them in order, though, 'cuz I think having Suikoden data on your memory card gets you more in Suikoden II)
Grandia (Also supposed to be great)
LUNAR games (I played the first (remade on the GBA), and the connection you feel with the characters is astounding)
Yeah, a bit overwhelming, but I'm in the same boat as you, since I didn't buy my first Sony system until the beginning of summer, and I've been kinda lazy in playing.
