PS2 RPGs...

With the release of Disgaea, I have finally relented and decided to buy a PS2

What I want now is advice on what games to get... I'm really only interested in RPGs, or partial RPGs. I couldn't care less about the GTA or Metal Gear Solid series, or anything else for that matter.

My current to-buy list:

Xenosaga
Disgaea
Star Ocean 3
Suikodon 3

And don't bother to list distant future games like FFXII or Suikodon 4

Oh, one other thing: I flatly refuse to buy FFX or it's sequel.

Re: PS2 RPGs...

Ah yes, forgot about those.

As for why I don't want to get FFX... well, to be honest, I think the game is crap. ANd I think FFX-2 is going to be even worse.

Yeah Kingdom Hearts, you should get Kingdom Hearts great game. I liked Silent Hill 3, it might be on another platform and you already have it though.

Re: PS2 RPGs...

Hmmm.... I can't think of too much to recommend beyond what you've already listed, at least in terms of RPGs that I've devoted enough time to to beat, heh.

Dark Cloud 2 and Wild Arms 3 are worth checking out, though. Don't worry about having played the previous installments, as they stand quite well enough on their own, and DC2 is definitely an improvement over the previous game.

Re: PS2 RPGs...

don't bother with Kingdom Hearts. you really wouldn't enjoy it...

and if anyone mentions .hack, shoot them... it IS dark cloud 1, minus the fact that your weapons can't decay. and the levels are a LOT more tedious...

i honestly haven't played many ps2rpgs, but definately support all things Xenosaga...

:::still needs to play ffX herself:::

Re: PS2 RPGs...

Its all in the matter of opinion...

Really depends on taste of games, whatnot. KH was pretty good, IMO. I also second DC2. Compared to it's predecessor, great game.

Can't say much else, all the good RPG's for PS2, in my collection at least, have been said.

Oh I will... I'm not about to spend 50$ on a short, subpar game that will end on a cliffhanger Doesn't matter how good the anime is.

What? Why are you looking at me?

How much did you play of it? It's actually really good. Seriously, if you didn't play all that much of it, give it a shot again. The Sphere Grid is very fun, if your smart enough to work it (and you are, in case you're wondering), and the story isn't half bad.

Well, you said not to list distant future games, but why not games from the past? Let's focus on some PSX RPGs.

FFVII - IX (I know you didn't finish 7, so get it and finish it. I can say from experience that IX is fun, though I can't say for sure on VIII. It's worth a try, though)
FF Tactics (WAY better than FFTA)
Chrono Cross (Sequel to 2nd best RPG (or video game, IMO) of all time. Hardly related to it at all, but still great, though in a completely different way)
Vagrant Story (Critically acclaimed as a masterpiece, but undermarketed, and overlooked)
Xenogears (Personally, I plan on waiting until they make the remake of it down the road. Of course, that won't be for quite a while, as it's supposedly episode 5 of 6, so I believe)
Star Ocean 2 (Haven't played it, but I trust that it's good and I plan on getting to it eventually)
Suikoden 1 and 2 (Supposed to be excellent. Play them in order, though, 'cuz I think having Suikoden data on your memory card gets you more in Suikoden II)
Grandia (Also supposed to be great)
LUNAR games (I played the first (remade on the GBA), and the connection you feel with the characters is astounding)

Yeah, a bit overwhelming, but I'm in the same boat as you, since I didn't buy my first Sony system until the beginning of summer, and I've been kinda lazy in playing.

Re: PS2 RPGs...

Jenovas Witness, I may be wrong, but he did say PS2 Rpgs. If he doesnt have any of those games you mentioned though, I second them all.

But I am to understand that Xenogears is the alleged sequel to the whole Xenosaga series. I dont remember where I read that, so once again, I may be wrong.

And IMO, Chrono Cross is better than Trigger.......uh...dont hurt me!!! Anyways, I just liked the story better and thought the battle engine was unique. Aside from that, you cant ignore the 45 characters that game sports. Most arent good, but a good 10 or 15 are.

True but this is fine as well... I never owned a PS1 either.

Yeah, I'll probably look into quite a few PS1 RPGs. Aren't they getting a bit hard to find, however?

Quick point: To unlock the secrets of Suikoden 2, you essentially need to 100% the first game. This is a pretty big task, considering how many characters and minor tasks there are.

Playing them in order has its merits; You'll meet a lot of the same characters. I don't think it'd be a total loss to play them out of order. Most of the missing plot is narrated pretty thoroughly.

Suikoden 2 is actually one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Some amazing plot twists....
