Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

This classic was released in 1996, at the end of the Super Nintendo's life. Many haven't played the game because the big release of Nintendo 64 overshadowed Super Mario RPG, but this game cannot be passed up. Super Mario RPG was the first 3D Mario game, the first Role-playing Mario game, and the first (and only time) Square Enix teamed up with Nintendo to make the ultimate Mario adventure.

Sure, it isn't a sidescroller, but it is a classic. Infact, their are so many Mario elements in the game, that you almost forget that the Mario franchise didn't start off as role playing games. This game uses platforming and RPG elements and they work very well. Many have played the Paper Marios and the Mario & Luigis, but those games just don't compair to the legend that is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars...

The plot is probably the deepest plot in any Mario game and by far the best, however, it starts off as your basic Mario game plot. Princess Toadstool (AKA Princess Peach) is captured by Bowser. Mario goes out to Bowser's Keep (Bowser's Castle) to rescue her. And the game starts you off where you are already as Bowser's Keep. After battling Bowser's baddies, you face off against Bowser himself. After a short (and easy) battle, you will and the Princess if yours... that is untill a giant sword called Exor crashed into Bowser's Keep send Mario, Toadstool, and Bowser flying miles away in different directions. After some adventuring, you meet up with Mallow, a cloud-like creature that believes himself to be... a tadpole? Anyways Mallow joins Mario in his quest, but first you must help him get back his grandfather's coin that was stolen from him. After you get that back (and what an adventure that is!) you meet a Star Warrior who takes the form of a doll (long story why). He calls himself Geno and he tells you what is the real danger. Remember Exor the giant sword? Well he works for the Smithy Gang. The Smithy Gang has crashed into Star Road and stolen Seven Stars that grant wishes. In this world, when you wish apon a shooting star, your wish is granted, but now the world is a place where wishes can't come true. You need to get the 7 stars back and rebuild Star Road so wishes can be granted again. The funny thing is, the Smithy Gang is so powerful that you will need the help of Bowser to take him out. That is right! Later in the game, you meet up with Bowser and he joins your party. I could go on, but you just have to play the game for yourself.

The battle system works great too. Much better than the crap in Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario. In Super Mario RPG, you can hold 3 people in your party in battle at a time and you actually get armor and magic attacks. Each character has their own special magic attacks (Geno having the best). The battle system also was the first to use timed hits and worked very well. You can tell Square-Enix was responsible for the amazing battle system. They even did a great job in the platforming. There is a lot of platforming and works out greatly.

As for the music... this game has the best soundtrack in any game in my opinion. A lot of classic Mario tunes, but even more new ones. However, even the new ones give you that Mario feeling that was missing from the Super Mario Sunshine soundtrack. The music is just another strong point of the SMRPG.

There is so many extras in this game too. A ton of minigames and sidequests, and even a secret boss (arguably the hardest boss in the game) named Culex. He sports the SNES Final Fantasy look and even has the Final Fantasy II boss music when you fight him. This game is also filled with cameos of Link, Samus, Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Luigi, and etc.

Overall: I would have to give Super Mario RPG a 9.95/10. I would give it a 10 out of 10, but I never do because no game is perfect. The fact is, if you haven't played this game, you owe it to yourself to do so. This is truely of the the better, if not best, Mario games and an instand cult-classic. If this game is downloadable on Revolution, you have no excuse but to download it!

Well... that is my review on one of my favorite games of all time. Has anyone played this title? Has anyone heard of it?

I've heard of it, and I wish I could play it, it sounds so good. But I'm one of those "new gamers" and possess nothing of the pre-N64 era. If it's downloadable on the Revo, obviously I'll play. And, nice review. Very professional.

Re: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

I just started replaying this game actually... it is one of those games i need to play and beat... as i have never beat it...

or any SNES game for that matter... I never owned a SNES or any of the excellent RPGs that was born because of it...but i will be replaying it over the next week or so...

But from what i played before it does have an excellent battle system and storyline...

But, I don't know what you have against Paper Marios and Mario and Luigis... those were good games as well, but i will agree they aren't on the level of SMRPG...

Re: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

find a used gaming store, like gamestop or something, buy a SNES, and play these games:

The Final Fantasys
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG

good RPGs for the SNES...

Re: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

I'm a little interested in who actually owned this game when it was released and who here just played the ROM. I of course, grew up on the SNES and gazed at this game behind the glass for what seemed like months wanting to get my hands on it. (Same with ALTTP) The release, however, was indeed overshadowed by the release of the N64 and Super Mario 64, making quite a few miss out on it.

Fun fact: SMRPG was my first RPG.

For the Final Fantasies, get/wait for the GBA releases or get the PSX version. The rereleases have better graphics, better difficulty, FMVs and extras on the PSX, (WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE GBA RELEASES AS WELL HINT HINT POKE POKE), and play all around better. I would also recommend getting Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PSX to get Chrono Trigger, since the PSX release has AMAZING Anime FMVs, especially the ending. Plus, the prologue of Chrono Cross is only in the PSX version.

And Secret of Mana is really due for a remake. If Final Fantasy Adventure was, then Secret of Mana is Looooooong overdue. Though I'll have my Mana fix with Mana IV and Children of Mana (woot for finally a GOOD portable RPG on the next (now current (DS and PSP, not GBA)) generation handheld consles.)

Re: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Ya, I love this game. I played it a long time ago when I owned a SNES but we let our neighbours borrow it and they broke it. So about a year ago, I just downloaded it for an emulator and I beat it. I think it has been the longest game ive played and beaten...other then harvest moon, which you cant really beat.
I would give it a 9.0 becuase I like the games where when you beat it, you can do other stuff, but when you beat this game, your stuck in the factory.

And I cant remember where, I think its the hotel in the rose city or something like that, with all the toads, you can go to the inn at night and see link in the bed, also there is another inn you can see Samus.

Re: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Fantastic game. Probably Top 5 for me. I rented it when it first came out and in the three rental days, I didn't get very far at all. I had just beaten Croco the first time when I had to return it. A week later, I just ended up buying the game. I remember it was pretty expensive too.

The game's got this certain offbeat charm about it. It has a heavy, important story line where you have to fix the Star Road, but the individual tasks are goofy and fun. Booster's many quotable lines ("Are you leaking, my dear?"), Valentina/Dodo arguments, Croco's snarky comment... They're all great.

Notably, I think this game marks Bowser's quick decline into insanity. Before SMRPG, he was this big bad dude who kidnapped princesses. In this game, he's more bumbling and comical, if anything. I like that change in Bowser's character. He's not a perfect bad guy; he's got to deal with failures and idiocy around him, including his own character faults. Bowser is a big part of what made later games like Paper Mario and especially Paper Mario 2 so good.

I've gone a little off-topic now, but Super Mario RPG is an awesome game that I encourage everyone to try out. One of the best ending sequences in video game history, in my opinion.

Oh, and Geno = teh shizz. Nuff said.

My friend actually got it the day it came out. I went over his house (I was 6 years old). I remember having a blast with this game, and then I finally got it that Christmas (1996).

Oh no! I don't hate Mario and Luigi or Paper Mario. Infact, I love the first Paper Mario and enjoyed the first Mario and Luigi, I just don't think you can compair them to SMRPG. I also never played Paper Mario 2 or M&L 2 so I have to check those games out. I was actually hoping for a GBA/DS remake of Super Mario RPG because there is a petition with almost 20,000 signatures on it, but it won't happen... I'm just hoping for it to be downloadable on Revolution. It would be a blast!

Geno is awesome. I was so surprised to see a cameo of him in Mario & Luigi. It was worth buying the game just to see him. I really hope Nintendo Brinfs back Geno, Mallow, Booster, Croco, and ect. in future Mario games.

I forgot to add the there are so many infamous quotes in this game. It is worth buying this game just to hear them! Not to mention the amazing gameplay and story!

"Who do you think you are, Bruce Lee? You can't just go in there with your fists flying!" -Mallow to Mario

"Booster, sir! There's a 70% chance that the object you're standing on is a cake..." -Snifit

Very true. It was Super Mario RPG who changed Bowser's character forever and made him what he is today. Without SMRPG, we would have had to live with the big personalityless cliche evil super turtle that simply lived at the end of the game. Legend of the Seven Stars is what GAVE Bowser is personality.

I never thought of that, but it is true. SMRPG also gave the Princess a new personality, but it was never used again. I think it was because she joins your party.

You can leave the factory. Infact, it's quite simply. Just jump on the trampoline near the entrance.

By the way, does anyone remember those Axem Rangers? I think they are by far the best baddies in any Mario game.

You really should try Paper Mario 2. In my opinion, it's considerably better than the original. The story is a little less Mario-traditional and the gameplay is very clever, how they tweak the Paper Mario engine throughout the game.

Definitely. SMRPG made Bowser into a funny, likeable character. Sure, I still want to defeat him in all of the other games, but now I can laugh at his follies when he fails. Thanks to these character changes, he's one of my favorite "Mario characters." If they made a game starring Bowser, I would go buy it immediately.

Hey, maybe I can sell that game idea...

They were great, just because they were such a blatant jab at the Power Rangers. I had never seen a video game before start parodying something from real life until the Axem Rangers showed up.

Axem Red: We fight for evil!
Axem Black: We live for disorder!
Axem Green: We like what we do!
Axem Pink: We struggle for chaos!
Axem Yellow: We are...
Altogether: ...the AXEM RANGERS!!

Friggin' hilarious.

That game is the single most enjoyable RPG ever conceived. I can't think of any other game that I'e replayed more than Super Mario RPG. I guarantee you I've beaten it at least 20 times - this coming from a person who generally won't ever replay an RPG, no matter the bonuses of the second playthrough.

I borrowed it from a friend... a lot. So, he owned it. (It might as well have been mine, though. Hehe.)

O my, that I seriously thought was the funniest part in that entire game. I was waiting for it to go like "GO GO AXEM RANGERS!!" or something like that. Although you'd think they would have been harder, they were actually suprisingly easy. I wish they would have that one form, with the dinosaur, that woulda been great.
