Symphony

Did anybody notice that many N64 games use symphony music and not computer made music? Why don't they do that with today's games? It sounds a lot cooler.
EX:Star Fox 64
Zelda OoT and MM
These games' music sound really cool with a symphony. I wish they'd make more games today with music like that.

Re: Symphony

Well, I'm not quite sure if I completely understand what you mean. Those games that you mentioned, TloZ:OOT/MM and Star Fox 64, did not have pre-recorded symphony/orchestral music. They where made with synthesizers and other such music producing equipment.

If you mean the general music style in these games, then I would have to ask you to look around more. There are tons of games out there that use such type of a musical style, look at the later Castlevania series of games. Like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, (hence, symphony) it has many outstanding/elegant songs that stretch through it's entire soundtrack.

Look around and you will notice that there are multitudes of games have such style of elegant music...

Re: Symphony

The N64 couldn't really do orchestrated music even if it wanted to, thanks to the small cartridge space. That's also why you don't see a bunch of N64 games with vocal songs in the credits. In fact, orchestrated music was pretty rare even on the PSX last generation. We saw titles such as Castlevania and Xenogears using orchestrated soundtracks, but the list doesn't go too much farther from there.

This generation, however, many games, such as Tales of Legendia, Xenosaga Episode I (and II?), and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess have gone to using symphonic music instead of MIDI's to achieve a much grander effect. Though, these days, MIDI quality is pretty amazing, with many tracks on consoles sounding more like real music ever before. It's really a Win-Win situation, with real symphonic works pulling the lead.
