Why do people like GTA?

I really can't answer that question, I don't know why someone would like to play a real life
or do some violence acting without a good reason, and think about the other meaningless
things that you can do. and most websites and magazines give it a perfect score.
so, if you have a good answer or just agree with me then post here.
(I don't have anything against the game or the people that like it,
but I just want to know why).

Because all serious gamers have parents who dont care what they do. they like cussing and violence and guns even if you could shoot people children or steal them i think the game is repulsive but that is just me....

But if they are not infested by it im ok then. And i personally like how you can drive it is fun.

The reason people like GTA (or at least why I like GTA) is because it gives you a sense of freedom. You can go anywhere you want, beat up the old lady down the street, it just makes you feel..... free.

And just to let you guys know, there is a big difference between videogames and real life. Just because I see Vercetti rob a bank and kill a pedestrian, doesn't mean I will. Some people just don't get that this is just as bad as reading a very violent fiction novel with pictures. But whooo.... people don't accuse people who read very violent fiction novels of being murderers obsessed with killing. It's just hipocracy on the accusers side.

Plus, there's nothing like driving down the street in a freakin' convertible at 200km/h, ignoring any laws of traffic. Or jumpin' on a boat and cruising on the river, just because you feel like it. You don't need money to do these things; you can literally do whatever you want... the freedom is why we play GTA, not the killing. Well, not the main reason.

The only reason I keep going back to it is because of the freedom it gives you,
The freedom in GTA is IMO unmatched by any video game out there today.

Personally, I have never liked GTA.

Mainly, I think it's just not my cup of tea. I much prefer a silly game where I can have a laugh (such as Mario Party, Mario Kart DS, Donkey Konga and Mario Power Tennis to name but a few) with my brothers/freinds/step-mum without really thinking about it. True, in GTA you aren't killing a real-life person each time you kill a VR person. I think it doesn't promote violence but there are unsavory things that happen because of these types of games. For example, I've read more stories about children killing people because of a game then most other reasons. So in a way, GTA just needs to be kept out of the reach of the younger gamers. I have no problems with teenagers playing it, cause they (supposedly) have brains of their own! Little kids are generally incapable of playing a game unless someone hands them one to play, or they stumble across one.

What I'm trying to say is; people like what they like. I don't like GTA. I don't expect people to agree with me, but I don't.

Also; is there truly a need for so much swearing? Why?

Well, it's sort of the whole crime scene thing. If you're killing people and carjacking, you wouldn't really give a damn about swearing. It'd kind of feel weird without all that, really.

People like GTA because it's awesome. Drive a bike off a bridge while taking down pedestrians with a Mac-10, or run a car over a cop and then drive off into the forest, while trying to run over rednecks.

It's all just for fun, and it won't have any effect on your mind unless you have mental issues, which in that case you shouldn't be playing video games.

Imagine a world where you could do anything, and never truely die.

I got the double pack a year or so ago for the xbox, and after seeing the good scores and playing the game... it's total crap, and can get really boring.

It's interesting this, GTA is supposed to offer total freedom, yet I meet people everyday, and some of them agree that they don't like GTA. Many people find it (as Scoria said) boring. Yet I have to wonder, why? I'm not saying I like it, but it puzzles me why someone would find it boring.

I, too, don't think it has that kind of effect on gamers(going mad or something)
I think that no one sane will kill someone because of a videogame.

but not all the people like very violent fiction novels( will, I do if it was really good)
personally, I think a gamer would like to play games with more fantasy like resident evil 4(M) and pikmin(E).
EDIT: I also find it boring after playing it for sometimes.

I actually did a study on the male average/casual gamer for one of my college classes. Around 87% percent of the people I questioned (around 250 people) said they played GTA to "kill people" and "blow **** up" for fun. Just because it's fun. I don't see any fun in it.

The truth has been told we play to do anything we want without the reactions thats would normally follow in the real world theres no way im gonna go rob a bank. The gives me that chance without actually doing it. (FREEDOM!!!!!!)

First off, I'd like to say this: I don't agree that VC and III gave you a true sensation of freedom. The mobility, customization and controls were very limited. Not only does SA give you a great sense of freedom, it just flat out plays great too. The combat, driving, swimming, para-jumping, costumization...not only are all these things in the game, they're done extremly well also. On top of that, the game was about 40 hours long not including the side missions. I loved San Andreas because of things like this.

The GTA games are very immerisive offer so much freedom- and the gameplay is also terrific. But I think the main reason people like them is because they're controversial. I don't know- I think they are fantastic games.
