What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
Well, what game do you think revolutionized the gaming industry? I for one believe that it's Super Mario Bros.. I think Super Mario Bros. revolutionized the gaming industry because it influenced just about 90% of the game developers of the 90s and the game developers now. Just ask any game developer and they will probably say that Super Mario Bros. was the game that influenced them to make games. What are your thoughts?

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
I tend to think of four games that really changed, or revolutionized the gaming industry. There are hundreds of honorable mentions, but these four were really important.
Super Mario 64 did a lot for the industry being the first 3D and all. Tetris sort of gave a spark to puzzle games. Resident Evil defined and perfected survival horror. And lastly Wolfenstein, being the greatest FPS of all time. |

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
Games that have revolutionized gaming include:
Super Mario Brothers Legend of Zelda Tetris Super Mario 64 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Goldeneye Pong Also, Pokemon didn't really revolutionize anything, but it became such a huge fad and amazing success story that I think it deserves mention as well. It really allowed players to communicate more than ever before. Pokemon is a very unique franchise with a lot of untapped potential. So, did I miss any? |

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
I think Nintendo revolutionized the gaming industry with all of it's products. You can't put a finger on an exact game persay. I'd say Zelda games and Mario games are a treasure of the sorts, so you can't forget those timeless classics. I suppose those could be considered revolutionary.
Who knows, maybe the "Revolution" will change the video game world for the better once it is released. I see some intense potential for this system here.

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
All of those games may have done something for the gaming industry, but they were not the first in their prime. The game that started the whole videogame market was Pong. The game set the basics for videgaming and to this day, it still lives on as a great game.

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
So many games have shaped the standards video games have today. Though I probably won't list them all, these are the ones I believe helped establish some of the standards video games follow today.
Pong Super Mario Bros. Super Mario 64 (The first game that really defined what it took to be a 3-D platformer) Goldeneye (Set the standards for many FPS's to come) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (One of the first, if not the first adventure game to imply a lock on mechanic) Though there are many more that can be listed, (I can go on for hours listing different games that have had an impact on the video game world) these are the ones in my opinion that helped shape the standards video games follow today. |

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
Pong - I've heard several variants on what exactly the first video game was, but there is no doubt that this was probably the first mass produced one open to a big audiance. It certainly left some cultural stuff behind.
Super Mario Bros. - Somewhat the same case but it did well pretty much everywhere and attracted an even larger fanbase in arcades and home systems as well. Kudos to the full length adventure as well. And of course, it was the birth to Nintendo's flagship series. Legend of Zelda - Introduced the first essential adventure that featured non-linear things such as backtracking(although I'm not sure if it was needed-- the game was way before my time) and of course, saving because such a long epic adventure called for it. Dungeons with the modern puzzle and much more item interaction as well. And again, our man Link was molded out of this. Super Mario 64/Ocarina of Time - I guess Ocarina of Time wasn't terribly revolutionary, but I think it deserves some merit, especially when it is considered among the greatest games all of them. Surely there was so quality that was more or less groundbreaking to acheive that, right? Mhm. Nevertheless, the duo showed the use of the perfection of the 3D transitional era. Followers weren't dissapointed for the most part and it also introduced a whole new fanbase. Of course, their signature feels were recreated and of course, everybody loves that. Lots of new mechanics introduced into the engine simply because of the different prespective as well. Fire Emblem - My little addition that's kind of on the fringe of it. But I feel that it's revolutionary enough to the strategy genre or at least shaping the idea of the grid, turn based system that many games have mimiced or at least have taken some inspiration over the year. It's always been a sort of pioneer in these things. Final Fantasy I - I don't claim to know too much about this era but I'm somewhat sure that it deserves the title of being the father of the modern roleplay-- which I think it basically derived from the ol' Dungeons and Dragons alogrithims(sp?) and equations. And of course, our good friend -- Mr. Random Number Generator. |

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
I agree with all that has been listed above, but I'd like to add my own...
Killer Instinct Gold. I believe it was the first fighting game to use a 3D arena? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
Killer instinct was awesome. All of these ideas are good but we're forgetting one VERY important game. Half life, Half life branched off so many games and it's engine is used in most new pc FPS today.

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
I think Super Mario Bros. did it hands down. If my NES wasn't busted, I'd probably still play that little gem. It brought so much into the gaming world and it is the game that got me into the gaming industry.
What a classic.....

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
One of the Castlevania titles for sure, but it's very hard to determine which title from the series could be considered "revolutionary". Maybe just one of the earlier ones, but I tend either Symphony of the Night or Circle of the Moon. Why?
They proved that even while being in a world of big, gorgeous 3D graphics and movie scenes, that a 2d game can still be awesome. |

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
Super mario bros.- it was one of the first games that stopped videogames being just for nerds.
Ocarina of Time- revolutionised zelda, great graphics for that generation, I even know Sony fan-boys who like this game. C'mon, that's gotta count for something. Super Mario 64- The game all platformers are compared to. Pong- First videogame. 'nuff said. Donkey Kong- One of the most popular oldskoll arcade games alongside Space invaders Goldeneye- The game all FPS' are comparec too. There's probably more.

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
Metal gear was a big step in stealth games but i still think that the platform games such as mario and donkey kong are just more classics than really revolutionising the gaming industry, whereas castle wolfenstein and doom were the biggest games to come into the FPS system and the engines of those games has lived on to revolutionise the gaming industry.

Re: What game revolutionized the gaming industry?
Like it or not, Halo set the surve for the 20th century because of its length and the fact that they did that with an FPS. Simply the best game I know of.
