Nes Memories
2005 marks twenty years since the North American release of the Nintendo Entertainment System(NES). During that time the NES has made a huge impact on all gamers regardless wether that they have played the system or not. Yellow Laser is now organizing a celebration for the NES, and we need your help.
I ask of you to post your memories of the NES. Share what you remember, share the games you played, share you opinions about NES compared to other systems of the time, just share any memory you have that in some way relates to the NES. Your writings will be featured on Yellow Laser so please try your best to write your memories carefully and thoughtfully.

Re: Nes Memories
Well, one time, I was playing Super Mario Bros. 2, and you know, it was safe to say that I owned. All of a sudden, I hear something crash outside. Turns out, a palm tree had fallen. This made the game crash and I got mad.
Another is when I would hold the light gun to the TV and play Duck Hunt. I sucked at aiming the regular way.

Re: Nes Memories
I never had a NES or SNES.Being the fact that I'm still eleven, almost twelve.
But, often I've heard my sister talk about those great systems. They started Legend of Zelda and many other legendary games. I have played a couple of the games though.Such as Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link on the Zelda Collection Disc.I've also played some of the Mario games that my sister gave me.They were on the NES and SNES, but were also released on Gameboy. Well, that's basically what I know about the systems. |

Re: Nes Memories
Ah, the roots of my love for gaming.
I was introduced to the NES at age 3 by my mother, who had bought it to play Super Mario Brothers and the like, having enjoyed playing it in the arcade. It was the first console I'd ever played, the first game even, taking into consideration that at that time, I'd never once so much as seen a computer. It was a lot of fun, playing the classic Mario Bros. with my mom an hour or two every day or so. And who could forget Duck Hunt, the light gun and that obnoxious dog, all bundled with SMB? I was always more fond of the skeet shooting, but when I look back on my life, I've held a tendency to lean towards more basic alternatives. I was quite the sharpshooter in that game, if I do say so myself. Not that it was particularly difficult with the range of technology available at the time. I'd actually never once picked up The Legend of Zelda in its NES days. We would often make trips to the video store and my parents would let me rent something; I'd snag pinball more often than not (it's a wonder I never actually owned the game). But, despite having heard from my dad once, "Why not try something different? Zelda is a lot like Mario and I've heard it's good. How about that?" I had never played it. Of course not! Pinball was quite possibly the best thing ever at that point in time. I've always had an unnatural obsession with pinball, though. Such an amusingly simple game. Aside from that, my all-time favorite NES game always has and always will be Tiger-Heli. Putting you at the controls of an 8-bit attack chopper armed with an ungodly supply of missiles, 2 bombs and the capability of acquiring "little helis" that can assist you in firepower either to your sides or forward. Of course, having firepower in three directions is the more intelligent decision, so I most often chose the red little helis. I've never beaten the game to date, but the fun factor has yet to die. It's just an excellent game. I remember a friend of mine at the time had a game very similar to Tiger-Heli, only with more abilities and action to take part in as you flew your aircraft about, raining down torrential doom upon the land of your enemy. We traded, borrowed each others games, one day and I had come to the decision that his wasn't anywhere near as good. Shocking revelation - more isn't better. I loved the simplicity of Tiger-Heli and the challenge it offered gamers. Captain Skyhawk was another such game that I enjoyed almost nearly as much. I actually managed to beat the game, though only once. The game itself was rather impressive for it's time, now that I look back on it. It was still 8bit, as per the limits of the console itself, yet it had a sort of third dimension to it long before the Super FX chip in Star Fox. Granted, I don't believe that Captain Skyhawk used polygons, but the implementation of shading gave it a very similar look. Awesome game, though. Colorful and exciting. Golgo 13 was another one of those games that I could sit back and play for long periods of time, too. Obviously, it's not as advanced as the espionage games of today, what with the complete lack of any stealth capabilities whatsoever, but it was still a simple, enjoyable experience. It's another one of those games that I was never able to beat, as well. There's a quasi-3D maze level at one point in the game, and for whatever reason, neither myself nor my father could ever successfully navigate out way though it without dying either in-game or of boredom. Everything up to that point never got old, though. Much fun to be had with the ol' NES, even today. Good times.

Re: Nes Memories
Contra and Tetris
Such awesomely simple games that couldn't have been more addictive. I mean, two guys running through a 2D jungle, shooting massive guns. And falling shapes made from 4 squares each. The people who developed those games are brilliant. |

Re: Nes Memories
I don't think there are going to be that many people around here who are old enough to have NES memories but am defintly one who dose! I would watch the goomba walk into Mario as a child and laugh when Mario died, when I finally learned how to play my true obsession was LOZ which is the first game I baught on my own, by that I mean I didn't just want another game, I wanted THAT one! My NES collection has hardly grown since those days (thanks to emulation on pc and dreamcast) but of that tiny collection will always have a place in my heart and will defitnly not leave my game shelf for any price. Besides LOZ I also remember playing TMNT 1 and Narc like crazy. During those NES years I didn't beat many of my games, only two, I beat Castlevania 2: Simons Quest and LOZ. That is unless kicking the ducks ass in Duck Hunt or shooting bad guys in another gun game called Hogans Ally counts.
I never put my NES away, just a few weeks ago my friend and I played Dr. Mario for hours. Its nice to know there are others like me who will never forget their NES. Thanks to this topic, I'm going to go play NES!

Re: Nes Memories
yellow laser? *feels lost*
anyway NES, the memories just fill my mind at the mention of those words. When I was in reach of a NES I had the IQ of a four year old, I wasn't very smart but the NES was my introduction to gaming. I remember playing Mario for the first time, I loved it, dodging enemies jumping over pits, I thought it was better than TV, I was in control. I never got very far when I was young, I remember I would always gets stuck on the second level because I couldn't get past the platform where the little stages were continuosly going upwards or downwards, but sometimes I managed to get past them, I got past them and celebrated alot. My favorite game, the game I enjoyed playing the most was the Ninja turtles, I loved every level of that game, it was probably my first side scrolling beat em up. I was young and being able to play as one of my favorite turtles and destroy the foot clan, that was one of the most entertaining things I ever did. The graphics were mind blowing to me at the time, I recognized things and I loved how the fate of the world was in my hands. I had alot of games that I loved, but I have no clue what they were called, when I was young I didn't care what it was called or what kind of rep it had, I played whatever I could and I loved pretty much all of it no matter how simple or easy it was. Duck Hunt also brought back alot of memories, I had a gun in my hand and there were ducks flying places, fairly simple but there were other games that required the gun to play. There was one game where criminals and civilians would pop out from behind statues, I loved pointing the gun at the screen my trigger finger ready to snap at any second at the sight of an enemy. I also vaguely remember one game where the enemy would count to three and whoever got shot first would loose, much like in those western's, the NES was certainly a gadget that I adored. My most favorite thing to do however was to watch my cousins play videogames, specifically Megaman. Watching a little blue man run around with a gun attached to his arm and watching him defeat bosses to take their powers, it was all so amazing. In the end the battle with Dr.Wily or whoever the heck it was (I was young, names didn't matter, it was all about fun) amazed me alot. My cousins were in their highschool years I beleive and they were much more advanced than me, watching something so amazing happen infront of my eyes just took my breath away. Sure there were movies that had much more impressive visuals, it's just that I wasn't in control of any of it. With games I used my own strategy, when I lost I understood why I lost in movies when the hero got hurt I always thought "I could have dodged that!" with the NES, it was all possible" Now that I am older and have a much better appreciation for games, I look back and remember all the good times I had. I tried to plug in my NES and relive those memories but as soon as I tried to turn it on, a faint smoky smell came from the system, so now I am resorting to the Nintendo Revolution. There will never be a replacement for all the memories I had with my NES, but it wasn't just the NES, when I was young my mother would play with me, and usually in fighters, loose on purouse. The NES isn't just a gaming system anymore, but a link to memories.
