Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

Chrono Trigger was originally released on the SNES. It was later re-released in "Final Fantasy Chronicles," bundled with Final Fantasy IV.

As for the game itself, it's great. Loved every minute of it. I enjoyed Chrono Cross more, though. =P

Eh, it's a good game, no doubt about that. But people worship it like it's God's Gift to Gaming, which it's not. However it's one of the few Squaresoft/Square Enix games I actually care about.

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

A good game? Chrono Trigger is an absolutly amazing game. It is simply one of the greatest pieces of media entertainment (in any form) ever created. Unfortunatly, because of the fact that I'm from Europe, I was deprived of the SNES release, the PS1 re-release and Chrono Cross. I played it through rom form...which sucks big time. Chrono Trigger is on the top of my Revolution download list.

Just use a USB Control Pad. You can get one really cheap, I got mine for 15 USD. It works a whole hell of a lot better than a keyboard.

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

ZeldaFanGirl, I have deleted two of your posts in this thread for being to spammy or low quality, or for having too many spelling/grammar mistakes. This last one came perilously close as well. Keep it mind that posts like that get deleted.

Chrono Trigger is my favorite RPG of all time, and one of my all-time favorites, period. It is a beautiful work of art... "God's gift to gaming," someone in this thread said. I wouldn't go that far, but it's not to far off.

It's one of those games that appeal to nostalgia, the memories of people who played it while children or much younger. It's one of those games that leaves enduring memories, that not only remain with you, but grow sweeter as time goes by. Were I to play the game for the first time today, I have no doubt that I would be thoroughly unimpressed. But I'm not playing it for the first time today - I played it for the first time years ago.

But it is more then nostalgia, for it truly was a phenominal game for it's time. It had the best music I'd ever seen in a game, and even now only Chrono Cross has really surpassed it. It had a very fun battle system.

But what really earns it's place as my favorite RPG of all time is the atmospheres created by the different time periods, atmosphere that is set by a combination of the fantastic music and stylistic graphics. We get to see the desolation of a dying world that awaits us in the future. We get to see the idyllic present and the war-torn but no-less beautiful recent past. We get to see the very ancient past, and the dawn of humans as we know them.

Finally, we get to see the Kingdom of Zeal. When I think of perfection in theme and atmosphere, I think of Zeal. Zeal, with it's proud and delusional people, quite possibly the best music of all time, and most importantly, it's fall. The end of the Kingdom of Zeal is one of the single best events in gaming history.

The fact that Zeal is home to Prince Janus and Princess Schala is probably what seals the deal. Schala is one of the best characters I have ever seen in a game. She doesn't have extensive dialogue, and she doesn't spout insightful philosophy or anything, but the simple kindness and her sacrifices for your party are important. Her death and the battle immediately before it are extremely powerful scenes.

Yes, death. Chrono Trigger and games before it featured the deaths of main characters long before Final Fantasy 7 ever existed. You may not have controlled Schala, but she's as important of a character as any of the others.

And what about Janus? Magus? He is probably my single favorite character to ever appear in a video game. I won't even try to describe it, because I could never do it justice. His story has depth, and immense sadness.

But yes. Nothing can ever compete with the atmosphere of the Kingdom of Zeal and the role it plays in Chrono Trigger.

I love that game.

EDIT: If I may, I'd like to direct some of you to this remix: http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=2556

It's very long, and I doubt that those who don't love Chrono Trigger as I do would care overly much, but to me it... is wonderful.

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

Chrono Trigger is one of my absolute favorite games. It was really the first game I could think of that had a great storyline coupled with good graphics and gameplay. I just fell in love with the characters and always felt a deep involvement with the story. I own Chrono Trigger for the SNES but I have never played Chrono Cross. I don't use a rom because its... well... illegal. I'm a game developer (well... someday) and roms = less profit for me and my kindred. But anyways, great game and If you haven’t played it I would highly recommend it.

[Edit]
In response to lord-of-shadow:
Yes, I completely agree with everything you have said... You have taken the words out of my mouth... er... text... out of... my keyboard... or something. Anyways, Chrono Trigger was an entirely rewarding experience. I wish that games of this era possessed the same enchanting feel as this masterpiece.

It doesn't take much effort to write intelligibly. The post you just made, for instance, is acceptable. But offtopic.

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

I may need to play through it again after reading that. I agree with it all, looking back on my playthrough of the game now, but I don't remember thinking those things as I played. I might've been to young to really appreciate it. Not that age is always a valid factor, but I wasn't the most attentive child.

Already got that one toplisted.

Wonderful doesn't describe it well enough, no words I know of can, as is the case with music as gorgeous and nostalgic as that. Alas, now I feel the urge to listen to it a few times.

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

*Points to custom title, avatar, and location.* :3

Chrono Trigger, yay. I myself have yet to beat it, but it's still one of the best RPGs I've played. Lord-of-shadow said pretty much everything about the game, so I don't have much to say other than that it's a great game. <_<

To ignore boring you, check out this piece of fanart my friend made.

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

Leave it up to Akirya Toyimara to make a good rpg game. (He's the guy who made Dragonball.) Everything about the game is good, and it's differant because the story is about you having to revive THE hero..

It's funny to be talking about Chrono Trigger with almost the same love as for Zelda, because in Japanease FF1 if you look at the gravestone behind the black magick shop in Elfland, it will say "Here lies Link", but in the American version says "Here lies Chrono"..

So staticaly I'd say Chrono and Link single-handely could not defeat Astos the darkelf, who's a low-level boss, PROVING Final Fantasy is /33t!

Infact, despite Akirya Toyimara desinging Dragonball Z, (Which during Frieza saga was grossly overpowerd, and after Frieza saga just unbelievable..) the rpgs released in honours of him were all pretty good. Then again the DBZ rpgs are in real-time which helps ALOT..

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

Akira Toriyama was the character and enemy designer. I don't beleive he had much else to do with the project.

Re: Chrono Trigger a really cool game

No, he did not.

If any one man were to be singled out as contributing the most to Chrono Trigger's magic, I'd say it was Yasunori Mitsuda, the composer.

Either him or Masato Kato. The game wouldn't have been the same without the excellent story.
