When we grow old...
Once we grow old and start maturing, will video games still be the same as they are, as in, give us the same pleasure in saving hyrule, throwing bowser into the lava, or beating your friend at Mario Kart
Do you want your kids playing video games as we once did, will you ween your kid on Nintendo or let him/her make him/hers decision. Or will video games phase children out as they grow more complicated and games get more violent. Your thoughts, this has been pondering me for a long time, i want my children (in the future) to experience the way I experienced video games, maybe i will have to keep my Revolution (when it comes out) from collecting dust, as my SNES has done so. |

Re: When we grow old...
I hope video games do keep going on in the future for the children of then to play on and me of course lol. I doubt it will start to dwindle the popularity of video games look at the amount of gaming websites and communitys that take up the internet today and the evergrowing technology used in video games. If anything games will get more popular and better in the future.

Re: When we grow old...
Some day, when we are in our 40s-50s, we'll go to the Smythsonian(sp?) and see all the old videogame consoles and say to our children or grandchildren, "I remember playing that when I was your age." Heh, that'll be something else.

Re: When we grow old...
By the time time when we all have kids, I hate to say it now, but I expect there will be a game that's even bigger and better than Zelda, and kids will want to play that game instead of the old Zelda games. Still, i guess some of the Sega games are still good ol' classics.

Re: When we grow old...
Video games are clearly not only aimed at kids anymore. Stats show that when the NES was released, the average gamer was under 10 years old. Now, the average gamer is over 20. Times have changed.
If I ever do have kids, of course I will let them play video games. I probably wouldn't let them play GTA or anything horribly violent, though. |

Re: When we grow old...
^ Agreed
If I do have kids, I would honestly want them to play video games, because they can do a lot of good for kids. When my kids would be young, I'd like if they played racing games, puzzle games, arcade games and even a bunch of the Mario parody titles, but of course not stuff like GTA, or even Castlevania or other FPS until they're at least 14 or 15. Basically when they're old enough to realize it's just a game, and doing anything from that game in real life is stupid I had a teacher back in grammar school who was big on video games, worked at the local EB Games in my neighborhood, and had three children. He told my class one day that video games were a good source of entertainment for kids because it was a form of enjoyment that wouldn't have them sitting on the couch doing nothing. The games would make them use their heads a bit, and figure out how to beat some part of it. It also makes them active, in that they'll have to pay attention to what's happening and be quick with all the buttons. Makes sense when you think about it |

Re: When we grow old...
Eh, honestly I don't know if I'm going to MAKE my kids play video games. The thing is a large majority of video game players are quite...well....nerdy. It's not like I would care if my kid turned out like that, but I would rather see if they take up something else in it's place first and maybe play a little video games here and there. If video games were taught to kids imagine how addicted they would become to them. Look how so many people turn out...and usually their parents don't give a **** about video games.
I'm guessing in 10 years most video games will be much more adult-oriented anyways...*cough* excpet Nintendo.

Re: When we grow old...
*Sighs* Videogames have become incredibly violent and realistic. Too many times have I heard people praise a game cause "the graphics look so real" and cause it's bloody, gorey and extremely violent. Of course that's not what makes a video game great (Paper Mario on the GC being a prime example of an excellent game that didn't resort to explosions and killing to enhance gameplay), but unfortunately, that's what sells these days... and as much as I don't like it, that's the plain truth.
Now for me, I've been gaming since I was seven and my love for gaming hasn't faded. In fact, over the years, it's grown. I won't deny that I do enjoy some Sony games, and a few (very few) Microsoft games, but if Nintendo were ever to stop making videogames- heaven forbid- I can most certainly see my love for gaming dying. I think that that would be the only time when my love for gaming would change. I know that sounds really fangirlish but it's true. Nintendo is the reason that I fell in love with gaming and why I still love it today. As for children playing games nowadays... hell, there is no way that I'm gonna let my kids (if I ever have any ) play something like GTA or Resident Evil. I know that those games are directed at the older audience but it's popularity, realistic graphics and bloodiness appeals to many young ones (I have nephews that think that GTA is "so totally awesome cause you get to kill people with guns!!) Of course I'll let them play videogames, but not overly violent ones. I'd like my kids to play stuff like my NES and Donkey Konga on the GC. I can see some conflict rising from that cause kids will want to play what's 'in' at that moment in time, and it seems like violent games are the 'in' thing. Obviously, as they mature their choice in gaming will expand, but when young, they aren't wise enough to filter out what's right and what's wrong, what's real and what's fake.It bothers me that my nephews have played GTA and seriously enjoyed it. It makes me think how many other kids out there enjoy these overly violent games. With that thought, I can most certainly see why people would think Nintendo's games are babyish... and why it would be hard for younger people to get into Nintendo games. |

Re: When we grow old...
Video games aren't the same anymore. Quite frankly, most of the next-gen stuff is looking about... t3h suck, for lack of a better phrase. It's all about great graphics, violence, and explosions, not the reason I started playing Yoshi's Cookie when I was a kindergartener. Eventually video games will reach a point where graphics don't matter anymore, and then they'll either die, or companies will take big risks with unrealistic graphics (current-gen quality, maybe?) where it doesn't take five years to make a game, and you're not out to sell a billion units. You're just there to try something new. Waaah, that was more deep than I wanted it to be... and totally off topic.
I hope decent video games will still be around for my children to play. Heck, I'll be lucky if I have children... having them play video games would be a bonus in my books. Companies are no longer targeting awesome, big-budget video game experiences at children. It's all "Finding Nemo" "Scooby Doo" or whatever... ad that's what kids buy. Stupid fools, wouldn't know a good game if it slapped them in the face and called them Susan (unless their name was Susan, then they would probably respond with a startled "hello"). Ja. I'm 13, and, quite honestly, I don't want to think about growing old anytime soon. Hopefully I've got a good 70-80 years ahead of me to enjoy life (and video games)

Re: When we grow old...
Who wouldn't let their kids have the same enjoyment that we all have had for at least a decade? I'd let them have a great time with a new console. But I just help smiling that i'll cream and or dust my kid in almost every game.
But I do hope that the games one or two decades from now will have the originality as most have now. *imagining Mario Party 40 and Legend of Zelda surviving old age (ok so that was a lame title)* anyways i really hope that games don't get too musch more violent cuz when you are walking down a hall and a living zombie crashes through the wall and starts eating you, its a little too violent for me. |

Re: When we grow old...
I doubt I'll even have kids.... But if I did, I'd love them to enjoy a nice few good rounds of SSBR with me... Or play a few rounds of Princess Peach's Secret Slide with me on Multiplayer. Soooo fun...... Anyway, the gaming industry is going really good right now, with all the gorehounds going for microsoft and sony. Resident Evil isn't that bad, if I can teach my kid a good sense of judgement, and he's atleast 10 years old, I'll let him play Resident Evil. GTA is out of the question. Entirely. That will have to wait till he's atleast 13-16. Or, who says it'll be a he? Anyway, I'm pretty maure and Play GTA (I'm 14) and Resi 4. I know both of them are fake, and GTA isn't doing anything to me wahtsoever. I play them for enjoyment, and enjoyment only, not to get angry and go rape 5 girls and cut their heads off.... In fact, GTA has nothing to do with that. I don't know how the media blames GTA for it. I'll just monitor what my kid plays, and play with him a ton (when I'm not busy or working or whatever) so we can bond and have fun with classical old video games. I am a nerd so I could care less if my kid is a nerd or a NFL quarterback.

Re: When we grow old...
I think its to early to think of having kids but if I did then I would show them the "magical world" of video games. If getting obsessed with video games is being a nerd then im one hell of a nerd. I would show them (or he/she) how much fun I had. I would play with them alot and have fun with them. I would let them play GTA and Resident Evil when they're about 13 but I would show them Mario and Zelda at a very young age. I wouldn't care if my child would be a sucky sportsperson but I would make them study so they are good at school.
