PHOENIX TO RISE FROM THE ASHES?
Speculation abound that Bungie may be pulling Phoenix out of the moth-balls after three years…
The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly has reported that Bungie’s Cinematics Director, Joe Staten, is working on several projects at the moment including a possible phoenix-like rise for the canned title, Phoenix.
At the moment Bungie haven’t made any comment about the move, and a resumption of Phoenix remains the stuff of web speculation – for the moment at least. It is well known that Bungie wants to develop an original title for the Xbox after the release of Halo 2, but whether Phoenix would fit into Microsoft’s plans is something that Bungie will have to try and overcome if the re-development of the game is indeed what they have planned.
What is known is that the game was in the process of being developed alongside Oni and Halo, only to be dropped sometime in 2001 to allow the developers to concentrate on Halo.
TVG decided to go searching for information on the game’s murky and mysterious past, and came across some logo art that had been produced for the title back in 2001.
What is interesting about the logo is that the image behind the actual art of the Phoenix looks exactly like the “Legendary” skill icon in Halo. How Phoenix fits into the whole Bungie Marathon/Halo mythology is anyone’s guess, and there remains very little in the way of actual detail about the game.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for any developments, including possible confirmation from Bungie over the coming weeks…
Hear is some artwork, this is from Breach (which was the working title for Phoenix, eg. Project Ego to Fable). I don't know if it's real, some guy in the Bungie forums says it is, but i definetly saw the top 3 images in an OXM.
