Thumbs down Nintendo's quarterly profit sinks nearly 80 percent

Recent news on Gamespot, thought I'd report:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07...s_6129939.html

Any comments or opinions? Feel free to post them here. It's hardly surprising; all of the companies are suffering. Like it said in the article, it's partially because of an end-of-the-console-generation slump.

Re: Nintendo's quarterly profit sinks nearly 80 percent

Before a bunch of fanboys come in here whining and screaming, I'd like to point out that the article also stated that Nintendo saw an actual profit this quarter, while Sony and Microsoft both posted losses.

Figured I should state that before people started screaming end of the world here.

Re: Nintendo's quarterly profit sinks nearly 80 percent

IDC and NPD predicted this back as early as 2003. As the article suggests this is typical for all three companies, and analysts have come to expect such slow periods within the industry over the past few generations. I seem to recall IDC's 2003 report even predicting that Nintendo would be somewhat harder hit in its home console sales, bouyed by its portable sales. Of course, this preceded even rumors of the DS.

Fingers crossed on TP as one of the few remaining killer apps for the Gamecube. Hopefully that'll be the spike that boosts their profit to keep investors happy at the end of the year.

Re: Nintendo's quarterly profit sinks nearly 80 percent

yeah its not surprisng. But it did say the DS was selling really good. another plus is the games on that top ten list. Pokemon 1st Resevil 4 I think 5th, and mc 7TH. so actually nintendo isnt doing that bad right now. This is also the first news on nintendo in a while. For me anyway. And some of it was actually good news. So I'm not happy to se the decline in sales, but happy that nintendo is elling.

I hope TP dosn't get lost in this slump............

But all the big 3 are doing their video wills, as they prepare for the big dirt nap. It's not suprising.

Re: Nintendo's quarterly profit sinks nearly 80 percent

Yeah, for a start, Microsoft and Sony both sell other products, other than their games consoles, so they have a larger amount of output (and thus losses in production/transport/etc costs), which makes them lose money (due to other areas). Nintendo, however, only produce games consoles, limiting the costs they will have (to an extent, or at least limiting these costs more than Sony and Microsoft have). Simple Economics. I could go on, but I won't. But the fact Nintendo have decreased profits shouldn't really be much concern. They're still selling. They're coming off some bad Gamecube times, plus the DS launch and other stuff so they're not actually doing bad in any way.

Re: Nintendo's quarterly profit sinks nearly 80 percent

Yeah, but Pokemon Emerald is the 2nd best-selling game of the year in the US. Yay, I'm gonna go get it in the fall maybe.

Loss in sales really isn't surprising.

I highly doubt that'll happen, if anything, TP will be it's last big hit and bring it out of the rut it's in. Once commercials start airing, it's gonna bring about even more hype. I can imagine that it'll be Ocarina of Time x10

Very glad to see that DS is doing well, it certainly deserves to be.

Assuming that the market follows percentages up to a hundred, I'd say this kind of steep. I'm too overly concerned though. Stuff has its dry spells.

Re: Nintendo's quarterly profit sinks nearly 80 percent

They are just game consoles. If one dies, another replaces it. Face it, no game consoles, no game companies, will live on forever and ever. They will either bankrupt, closed down, or they will change their identity to a whole new one with a whole new different approach.
