Tales of Legendia

Since Namco are letting this one leave Japan (Nintendo had to pay to let Symphonia go to Europe and the States), I am guessing it will be pretty big. Pretty annoyed that Namco don't seem to want to make any Tales games for Cube, oh well.

What are your impressions? The characters seem to be chibi like Symphonia's, only rendered more like plastic dolls then cel-shading.

I wish they had used the usual charater artist for the series (Misumi Inomata, I think, I am a big fan of her styel though). They are also using another composer then Motoi Sakuraba, so I am guessing they are trying to redevolp the visual and aural formula.

What are your impressions on this game?

Re: Tales of Legendia

Visually the game looks great, cel-shading would have been nice but I'm not too picky. The official art had me a bit turned off for a while but the whole thing has grown on me. We haven't heard too much from the music but from what little we have heard (about 3 different 30 second tracks) the music is shaping up nicely. I was expecting Motoi Sakaruba and I wouldn't have been surprised if Yasunori Mitsudai did something since one of them are ususally the head honcho's of Namco's RPG music. They didn't do anything too drastic with the battle system, the grabbing move is a nice addition. I'm still confused about the character quest part though (the one that is supposed to increase replay value), Chuc will probably find this topic soon enough...If we move onto characters, Moses=Pwnage, I will be playing as Moses (assuming you can play as other characters) the second I get him. I also never realised Jay was a guy, and we also have a Girl wonder chef!

Re: Tales of Legendia

First of all, the whole concept of "cel-shading" is lost to me, as in I have no idea what it is. Also, I will of course be buying this game, as it looks great. Hopefully the plot and music will be as good as Symphonia, the Greatest game I have ever played. Yes, even better than any Zelda game I've played.

Re: Tales of Legendia

I thought Jay was going to be a girl who disliked sunlight (And I thought Reala from ToD2 was a pale, as was Melodia from Baten Kaitos. Don't Namco's alumunae like going out?) I was pretty suprised when I found out he was a boy. He is going to be a transvestite, I suppose. I liked Genis and Mao's character designs better.

All of the designs look really weird, but I found myself warming to Norma and Shirley. Shirley really reminds me of Colette (she seems to have pheonix wings, and is some kind of chosen person like Colette. Shirley seems to be the descendant of some extinct race, and a lot of people want her dead or kidnapped.) Norma seems adorable. Even though she wears the skins of several rubber ducks.

All but three of the girls have weird weapons. Remember Genis's kendama?

Grune: Water jug
Shirley: Quill/pen
Norma: Straw

Right....I am guessing they will be mages then, and those weapons will be used as incantations......I think they should have hade more melee girls, and mroe mage guys. What is Shirley going to do with a pen? Write a bestseller and wow the enemy with it?

Re: Tales of Legendia

It's actually going to see the light of Western shores because it's 3D, not because it's a title of epic proportions. Ever since sales of Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia (Destiny II us) flopped, they've been extremely reserved about releasing 2D RPGs overseas. Or, at least that's what I've come to understand. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, anyone. Damn shame, though. Both of the 2D Tales titles I've played, Phantasia and Destiny IIjp are quite fun, but oh well. Life goes on, I suppose.

I'm very interested in Legendia, if only for that music. The first song in the trailer that features around 4 pieces, including the English vocal track, blows my mind away everytime I hear it. I don't know if I'd go as far as to say it's Mitsuda, though. But, I suppose it's possible. He does have a rather varied style and has used big-name orchestras (e.g. The London Philharmonic in Xenosaga) for his soundtracks in the past.

That character art is an interesting change, too. Granted, Inomata and Fujishima are great artists, but I really like Nakazawa's style. Jehuty is certainly right, Moses is quite awesome, I love his character design. Which is probably because he looks so much like Mugen, who also is awesome, from Samurai Champloo. I imagine he'll be a fun character to play as once you engage in battle. Of course, fighting as Senel will probably be the easiest to control and wisest choice for playing as thoughout the game, which is typical... and fine.

Re: Tales of Legendia

You're right about me finding this page.

Well.. I don't have much to say in the way of the game, other than the fact that I'm curious about its battle speed. Looks slower than Destiny 2s, but faster than Rebirth (which was just the right speed). I'm getting both Japanese and English versions, so whoopiedie.

Oh, and I'll be posting any new news here from now on =)

Re: Tales of Legendia

I was never really a fan of the Tales series until Symphonia showed up, which, to be honest, almost slipped under my radar. Hopefully Legendia will satisfy my appetite for another good Tales game.. until then, I've got a list of RPGs to keep me entertained.

Re: Tales of Legendia

I never even heard about the Tales series, and their tradition of adding "ia" to the end of pretty words, until Symphonia. Symphonia is the only Tales game to have made it to England.........and there was no way that it would slip my radar. Namco's double whammy of rpgs for cube, was like Christmas come early for me!

So I hope Legendia won't miss over Britain. Though I think I would have rathered Rebirth, I am thrilled either way. But is it worth getting a PS2 at thsi point?

I'm not sure though........it's going to be obscelite in about 2 years, isn't it?

But then again, I don't have 500 pounds to blow on a PS3. I really want to play Star Ocean, Shadow Hearts, Final Fantasies and a few more. Ooh, and Atelier Iris! Norn is so cute! Mew!

I'm not so sure about ToL, but I guess I will like the characters too. I didn't really like the designs for Syphonia, when I first saw them.

Re: Tales of Legendia

I hope this has all of the epicness of ToS, without all of the stupid scenes. Some of the music in ToS was pretty stupid and TOO HAPPY. I like cel-shaded graphics, but ToS didn't pull it off right. I hated the cel-shading in ToS, it looked so dumb. While ToS was a great game, it only deserves a 4/5. The cel-shading really killed the feeling for me. I like these new un-shaded graphics. I can only hope for better music.

Re: Tales of Legendia

That's funny......I am the complete opposite. I loved Tale's cel shading, but hate Legendia's graphics. I just hate the way, all the character models look like Fisher-Price teething toys.

Re: Tales of Legendia

That's an interesting analogy. o_O

I'm partial to the detailed anime-like sprite style, myself. Basically, the graphical style used in everything except Sypmhonia and Legendia. 2D RPGs rock. =P

Ah, and I wouldn't worry too much about the Playstation 3 rendering it's predecessor obsolete just yet. It's inevitable, but as it is, the PS3 is rather expensive, doesn't sport too many exciting RPGs (one?) for the release and still is a number of months away (release is around E3 2006, or so I've read). Pick up the new slim PS2 for $150 and open yourself up to a slew of wonderful RPGs (as well as a few other gems).

Re: Tales of Legendia

I got my slim PS2 with a barnd new spanking copy of Xenosaga and Dark Cloud 2. I've liked the graphical styles throught all the Tales games. Symphonia may have not had sprites but the colors were vibrant and the cel-shading made the game look great and give it a nice anime feel, the overworld was nothing impressive but it didn't bother me much. The graphical style of Legendia looks alright, but I would like it better if it was cel-shaded, I'm not too picky on graphical styles though. The battle graphics look great but the battle ending screen looks...boxy.

Can't wait to get this. I imported Rebirth a while ago and absolutely loved it.

The Tales series is probably my second favourite RPG series, next to Dragon Quest of course.

For some reason, the anime pictures of the charas, remind me of Noir. Chloe really looks like Kireeka.

??? Why not just wait for the US release and save the cash?

I've never seen a 2MB video clip that great. *Crosses fingers that Legendia will take advantage of Digital Sound and Progressive Scan with 16:9 pulldown*

Edit: Nothing like 6:19 pulldown.. >.<

It's different from Symphonia and Rebirth's. It seems to be a return to the traditional tales format. The one that really looks like a fighter game, from the side. Rebirth had three lines, and Symphonia had mulitiple, but Legendia has just one.

I think.
