Gaming Honor

In my belief a true gamer is one who plays games for challenge... One who overcomes great odds, not to be called great, not to boast, but to further themselves within their own mind, to prove to themselves that they can, in fact save the world... A true gamer has HONOR! but alas... as my journey through gaming moves foreward, I see some who (in my mind) are disgracefull... i see people plugging cheat generators into their systems... do not get me wrong, i do not look down upon these people, but.... there are some who cheat and say that they have overcome the obstacles placed before them and are "better" than those who do not...
one example: one day i become stuck on final fantasy tactics, this kid who i used to go to school with (who's name will not be mentioned) is over my house (i had no idea why, i dont like him much) and he suggests that i use his game genie to level up to lv 100!! this both saddened and sickened me!! i was appalled that he even considered me using game genie to defeat my foes! i would not be able to live with that... but then he said something even worse.... he said, " I did it and now i have every job and every ability you can get! no one can beat me!" well, of course no one can beat you, you CHEATED thats why they call them CHEATS!!
He was proud of his cheating, and i am deeply insulted that he calls himself a gamer.... okay one little cheat here and there is alright, but for this person, everything is cheated on! i would like to know what everyone else thinks about honor in gaming

p.s. graphic altering cheats such as the cardboard tube reaver in legacy of kain: defiance, those are all right because they do not alter your own abilities... hard mode cheats are all right by me too....

Re: Gaming Honor

yea i kinda agree! i play to improve, and to beat others. i always like a challenge. the only time i cheat is when i have gotten as far as possible in the game. ie, 100%.
i also cheat in games i dont like at all. but i dont go into shops and buy cheat disks. i used to get free ones with CUBE magazine. (cool mag, buy it now!)
this is another reason i want the revolution so badly!! so i can challenge othe gamers!! i cant wait for that!!

Re: Gaming Honor

Always about honor, huh? Actually, I agree. Cheats have a time and place. I see them as a way to expand your gameplay AFTER (I can't stress that enough) you beat it the first time AT LEAST. I use them when I get bored with a game I've beat countless times and am tired of waiting to be strong enough to walk through the dumbest part of a game. Generally speaking, people who use cheats exclusivly to say "Well, I beat the game in one hour. If you can't do that, you're a pansie." are, in fact, pansies themselves. Okay, I'm done.

Re: Gaming Honor

I enjoy using cheats only after I beat the game. For example I like to use cheats on pokemon games for the GBA after I beat them. Ocasionally if I get stuck I'll use a walkthrough to help me but thats about it.

Re: Gaming Honor

I only use cheats after I beat it, or harmless cheats that add things (such as paintball mode in Goldeneye). They don't help you, they are just funny. I sometimes use walkthroughs because I would never figure some of the things out, or I am tired of running around aimlessly because I don't know where to go.

Re: Gaming Honor

there are certain games that I want to play all the way through, accepting whatever challenges may come my way, and there are certain games that I really dont care about (The GTA series, most PC FPS). Its those kinds of games that I want to have pure, unadulterated fun, exploit it to the max. Games like that usually don't give me much of a challenge anyway, I can turn away from the easily if I need to expel waste from my body

Re: Gaming Honor

I think that the GTA games are MADE to be cheated on, especially for me. I just, when I played it, ran around having fun. I didn't do the story, I just randomly did things. If you play it like that, cheats don't take away your honor, since you didn't intend to use them to beat the game.

Re: Gaming Honor

I've got another story... once, this kid was playing my kingdom hearts game. he played on my little brother's file because he is well known for using cheats... well, after a few days he and my brother come up to me and say: "Hey! i beat it!!" i turn to the kid, he's holding a cheat code generator thing in his hand... i ask: "did you use any cheats?" the kid replies: "only two, one to allow me to equip as many cards i want and one to give me 999 life..." i stared at him in dismay... "Then, you didnt really beat it did you?" i asked. "but now you can play the second part!" he said. " i dont care!" a burning rage welled up inside me, "I plan on beating the game by my own skill, then playing the second part! thats the way it is supposed to be played!! you have no honor" i turned and left, i could not bear to be in the presence of someone like that...

Re: Gaming Honor

Well, when I am playing N64 games or Gamecube games, I have gaming honor because I dont use any cheat codes, I play though the game and take a few lose here and there and go on. If I fail, then you retry and go again, no matter how hard the game is. I get some hints and tricks and check out some walkthoughs, but I go on. But when it the case with Genies, SNES and NES games, I have no honor sadly, because since I am running the games on a ROM Emulator, I have access to the Game Genie cheat codes and I trend to use it, just to make the game fun like with Final Fantasy 6, I was using free items cheat and Lv. 99 cheats and 99 item cheats. Well, that not gaming honor.

Gaming honor to me, is that you go though the game without cheating, no matter how hard or tough the game gets. Going though the game without cheating is having honor. If you win by the ways of cheating, you have no honor, but if you go on without cheats or codes, then you have honor.

Re: Gaming Honor

I never use cheats now.
I once used them in a Spyro the Dragon game when I was really bored. I had already beaten the game, so I didn't use health cheats or anything like that. I just turned Spyro orange, blue, black, red, etc. It was funny for a few minutes.
I have a guide or two, for things like Pokemon so I know what level you get which moves in, and I occasionally refer to my Animal Crossing guide for which fish are in season, but no cheats for those. Beating games normally is a lot more fun. I've beaten plenty of games without cheats, I don't need them. I'm good enough as it is, and it's so cool once I've beaten it and know that I did it myself.

The only game I ever really cheated on all the time was The Sims. This was back when I had problems with it. I simply was not good. My Sims always ran out of money and got drepresssed. So I told my friends about it, and they told me about a code that gives your Sims money. I'd enter in the code and had fun making giant mansions and ulta-rich Sims. Only thing is, after a while it got sort of boring. I challenged myself to make a household where I would use no cheats. While I had been fooling around using the cheats, I had actually learned some things about managing a Sim household. I made the cheat-free family, and had so much fun, it was unbelievable. Managing a career with the Sim's needs and making friends to advance...it was so hard, but I loved the challenge.
After that, I said, "To hell with cheats!" and since then I've gotten really good at that game. I gave up cheating on that game, because now that I knew how to do things, cheats were boring and no fun at all. Without cheats, I could actually feel proud of myself for the fruit of my labor.

I went to TheSims.Com to download some interesting skins (harmless and some were pretty funny), and checked out the forums there.

It was horrible.
Half the posts there were made by n00bs going, "ne1 no cheats 4 teh sims? i want alot of moniey, can u give me all teh cheats 4 that?"
It really bugged me. How do those fools think they can have any fun if they cheat all the time? By taking out the work and challenge, they take out 99% of the fun. I know this from actual experience.
In some cases, using a cheat is okay. Say you're playing GTA and just wanting do a lot of random destruction, you can use the weapons cheat, have some fun, that's all. But when you use it to skip all of the hard parts, it really does not make it fun. Cheats for turning a purple dragon red=fine.
Cheats for beating a game so you can brag about it=not okay.

I have been cheat-free for more than three years. ^-^

But I have a friend who goes overboard with the honor. In a fighting game, he lets the oppenent get up after he knocks him down before he hits him again.
Then, when I hit the opponent while they're on the ground, he tells me that I have no warrior's honor.
It's called strategy. Refraining from hitting the opponent in a fighting game? Not smart.

Re: Gaming Honor

Only time I used cheats was Game Genie codes on ZSNES while I was ****ing around with Link to the Past. It was mainly the "walk through walls" cheat, then getting all the items so I could mess around in parts of the game you aren't supposed to get to. I ended up finding a piece of heart that isn't in the "normal" part of the game.

The only other time I "cheated" was using the Challenge Glitch in Perfect Dark (on site, 7th down) I simply didn't feel like beating all those challenges; Me and my friends just wanted all the unlockable weapons for multiplayer. And multiplayer was fun.

And occasionally it's fun to put a hidden teleporter in a Halo map that leads to a sick weapons cache, and take out the people that camp in tanks right next to where everybody respawns.

Now, other than those instances, I'm a pretty legit player.

I think it's sad that you have to take it so seriously. I have always been a gamer with honour, but you're just exaggerating by a long run.

Most people play games for fun. If cheating makes it more fun they use cheats.

Re: Gaming Honor

I wouldn't really call it "gaming honor", I'd refer to it as Gaming Style. It's just a game, sometimes I cheat if I'm bored with it and sometimes I decide to play it normally. I usually play it without cheats on my first run through and if I see someone cheating in a game I don't really get angry, I join in on the cheating and hope I don't glitch up the game.

Re: Gaming Honor

Gaming honor huh? Me personally, I don't get caught up in that kind of thing. Games are meant as a form of fun entertainment for people. I generally don't use cheats but they are usually meant for fun purposes. The gaming generation has gotten too advanced, in a sense. Gamers are losing what games are supposed to be all about: Fun.

in response of your accusation of my exaggeration i would like to say that i take gaming seriously, you could say that i have a passion for gaming... when people beat my games using cheats and brag about it, you would expect me to be a bit pissed off now, wouldnt you?
hey, lets look at sports players, how do you feel about those who use steroids? instead of using their own skill, they have to cheat and build themselves up artificially, its the same thing as using cheats...

With gaming, when somebody cheats their way through, they technically didn't win. Just view it as it is; they aren't really beating the game, not on their own anyways. It's nothing to get all pissed off about. Just because they happen to think they beat it, doesn't mean they did.

Plus, when they go bragging to their friends, you can just say "Yeah? Well I beat it without cheating my way through!" Guess who'll get more respect?

Re: Gaming Honor

I try not to cheat, at least on my first run of a game. In the worst-case scenarios, in which I'm totally stuck and it's starting to put me in a bad mood, I might use a cheat. Like others have said, after the game is beaten, cheats can be good to get more replay value out a game.

I regard strategy guides in the same categories as cheats. In my opinion, if the book is going to tell you everything to do, it's not really you playing the game. However, they can be useful if you get really, really stuck, like mentioned earlier. I ruined a couple games for myself by using a strategy guide on the first runthrough. Needless to say, I didn't really feel that I accomplished much when I beat the game.

Re: Gaming Honor

I agree. In fact, I don't think I've ever used cheats on a game. I like to beat them all the way through on my own. I do use walkthroughs (but very rarely, or after I've already beaten the game), but walkthroughs and cheats are two different things. I was horrified when I was old enough to realize that my brothers cheated on games with the Game Genie, and they're better players than me even without using cheats. Curse them...

actually, i think higher of strategy guides than cheats... strategy guides are usefull for an assortment of things: they teach you more about the world of the game, provide tips, and even give you pictures to practice your drawing skills on! strategy guides are alright to own. sometimes i buy strategy guides of games i've already beaten just so i can read it like a story now and then. also, i love reading about all the side quests to see if i missed any. nevertheless, if you read a strategy guide because you're stuck in a game you still have to use your own skill to get past the obstacles.
