LOS ANGELES — The U.S. District Court in Oakland, California, has ordered Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and its U.S. unit to pay $90.7 million in damages to Immersion Corp. for patent infringement over controllers used with PlayStation game consoles.

In the ruling handed down Thursday, the federal court also ordered Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Entertainment America Inc. to stop selling the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 game consoles using Dualshock controllers as well as more than 40 game software products. (Kyodo News)

This just came out of nowhere, and seems too big to be real.

I heard somehting about that flying around a while ago, that Sony'd be sued. I hope it's just bull crap. That'd put a major dent in Sony's Profit then. And then we won't have too much competition in the future of gaming.

This is very bad news for Sony (Providing it's the truth). Especially because there's been so much about the PSP's poor launch day, and problems.

As far as I've heard, they've all but sold out! People were camping in the parking lots of Circuit Cities and WAL*MARTS and such...

Uh, here I am, talking about the stupid sueing deal. The article didn't give much info, but I got the drift. Now, I'm not a big fan of Sony (as far as the PS2 goes), but I really hate to see this happening. Why? Because they're competition for Nintendo. As we all know, competition makes everybody work harder. Including Nintendo.
It'd be better (as good as a company Nintendo is) if they have a little competition.

Engadget has more info, and refers back to a previous iteration of the issue. The Engadget article's comments feature someone posting the Judge's stay, apparently, meaning PS2s can still be sold until appeal.

Most sources seem to be speculating that Sony will, if they lose on appeal, simply license Immersion's technology for roughly the amount listed, which seems proportional to what Microsoft had to pay, based on number of units sold.

The fact is though, Sony makes games for a wider audience than Nintendo does. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy some Nintendo games, but don't you agree with me that all the games seem to have that young cartoonish feel? I mean, besides Resident Evil, what's another game that doesn't appeal to younger children or to parents of younger children? I know Nintendo makes good games but Sony will always do better than Nintendo since they target a wider range of an audience than Nintendo does.

WTF does game quality have to do with a lawsuit?

if they have to stop selling games that use dualshock....isn't that like every game they've made? This'll make a dent in Sony if this is true, and so close to E3...

Me too. I still feel kind of bad though, since I've been praying a lot lately for Nintendo's success. It'd be really weird if all of a sudden the same thing happened to Micro***... This is gonna be so bad for Sony...

Oh really?? It's the complete opposite here where I live. I took a small survey among the boys in my P.E. class the day after the launch, asked them what handheld they'd prefer, and 4 out of 5 said they'd still prefer the DS.
