Features over game play?

Have you noticed that gaming developers are making games and consoles that are focused on features then game play. Like oh you can touch the screen and stuff like that. So lets talk about that. Give facts and make discussion happen here.

yup. I feel when I play the new games but it is boring but they have touch screen or 3d or louder sound.

Yeah, that's how it pretty much is now with the video game industry. At leas that's what I'm seeing. You really think I give a damn about two touch screens Sony? Or Tablet to Console connectivity Microsoft? HELL NO!

I just want to play video games,don't care about all the other gimmicks they dish out.

While I do agree that some additional features on consoles are useless as far as gaming goes and thus should not be a big focus of their effort, I don't think a touchscreen is irrelevant for gameplay, just ask the DS.

Not saying that the touch screen didn't help with games, the DS and the 3DS did it well. But Sony is just exaggerating it now. Which leads to me what I was going to say earlier, with the gimmicks present now it seems like all of them are copied from each other. From the Wii and their motion control, to touch screen technology.

It seems like a lot of the the features aren't unique anymore. The PS Vita and the 3DS can do Augmented Reality now and if Microsoft had their own handheld console they'd probably be on that bandwagon as well.

Gaming companies copying the crap out of each other is hardly new, especially stuff that has been proven to be successful. Now a back touch screen I hardly see how it can be useful so I agree with that, it sounds to me like adding a third analogue stick: pointless and not all that useful.

And how the word "gimmick" is used in gaming has always bothered me: it boils down to anything that's not a standard controller

I know but I fail to see how it aids to the competition of video games when each competitor is using the same tactics and features as each other. I don't see how Sony can't best Microsoft or Nintendo without having to implement their own brand of motion control.

How is that a bad thing? Then companies will have to best each other with the only tactics left when everyone is on even footing: good games that use those features to their fullest instead of relying on "it has motion control!" alone.

Fair enough. But it does seem to get annoying after awhile.

Poor gameplay is the fault of the game developers, not of the consoles themselves. Of course, consoles aren't making it any easier by throwing all this gimmicky technology at them. Not that I'm against any and all advancement of console technology (somebody earlier in this thread mentioned tablet/console connectivity in a negative light, but I think this opens up a huge window of possibility), but lots of what's out there right now is downright pointless and stupid. I honestly have no idea how motion controls or 3D add anything of value to the gaming industry.

The 3D does the same as any graphical advancement, eye-candy (sans headaches which honestly if they didn't happen no one would be complaining about it). Motion can add a heck of a lot if the developer isn't a complete idiot who just uses it to replace a button (which sadly happens most of the time).

They are just not opening there eyes to see that they are slowly ruining there reputation with us. They focus on the people who like features.

I like 3D in general so i dont mind that. Motion controls, im not really big on but i can hang with when done right. Touch screen is cool in the DS/3DS fashion. But i dont see the need for more of that on other consoles. I still have mixed feelings about the Wii U business too. I kinda want games and consoles to go back to focusing on gameplay and fun instead of how amazing the graphics can look and what a console can do outside games. I mean, do we really need netflix on a console? Yeah its cool but come on.

I also which games werent so needlessly complicated. Some games have too much in their menus and junk and too much going on in their battle sequences and stuff. Lame.
