Re: I've never played the N64.

I've barely touched (entire series for all); Half-Life, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted or Metal Gear. Yeah, I wasn't as open minded back in the day. Still, they're in my backlog.

Re: I've never played the N64.

I bypassed the 4th generation of gaming. I got an NES when I was little and had only that until the N64 came out. I only saw Sega Genesis and SNES on very rare occasions when I was visiting people who had them or this one time when we rented a Sega for a week. Almost all of my 4th generation gaming was done in retrospect after the advent of the 6th generation via rereleases, Virtual Console, and ROMs.

Re: I've never played the N64.

Even if I grew up with the N64, I never played Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask until just about two years ago. Several friends had it, I just never cared to wish it for my birthday or to try it. I regret that decision now though. I never knew I would be such a big fan of the franchise that I am today, and now I've missed the opportunity to have that nostalgic magic bond between me and the games.

I've also never even touched a Sega system. None of my friends had it and I didn't even know it existed back when I was younger.

I didn't play Final Fantasy VII until about 2004-2005.

And I still haven't beaten Final Fantasy VI.

Re: I've never played the N64.

When I came to ZU, I was rather careful to never mention that the DS was my first console. It felt like some BAD THING to never had played any consoles at all before that and that I'd be judged or something, so I kept it under wraps.

Gaming things I've missed out on, uhhh, I guess technically the N64 does not count if only because there are other ways to play the games on that system. I've never owned an Xbox or a Playstation, the latter holding quite a few games I'd love to try.
What I feel I really missed out on was a lot of Gamecube games that I wanted to play, though that said I have finally managed to play the one that mattered the most to me a couple months back. :D

To name some of the console titles I still want to get to, uh, right now I can only think of the Metal Gear titles, LittleBigPlanet, Pikmin, Animal Crossing. There are others, though. I JUST CAN'T THINK OF THEM.

Thankfully I think that on the PC side, I'm doing well with the range of titles that I've played/owned. Of the titles that I want to play, I either already own them and will be able to get to them later (BioShock is an example) or I'm rather sure that they'll be easier to grab during a Steam sale. SO I'M FINE THERE.

Re: I've never played the N64.

I played the SNES, but I never owned one. Which is sad because the best gaming memories I have was on the SNES. I now own some of the games that came out for the SNES like Diddy Kong Country, but the Virtual Console don't sell rarer games like Asterix and Obelix. I can't even remember the name of the game, but maaaan that was an amazing game.

So I pose a question: What video game norms have you actually never done? Have you too, passed up the opportunity to play the N64? Are there some key video game titles that you've never actually played? Anything of the sort.
I haven't played an N64 really until 2010. I didn't grow up in the 90s, I was born in 1997. I really don't mind. The N64 is now, probably one of my least favorite Nintendo systems.

I do not own any 16-bit era systems. I have not played a lot of the major franchises today such as Uncharted. I do not own too many DS games. I do not own all too many current gen games, and a lot of the current gen games I do own are niche titles.

I've never played any Xbox or Xbox 360 games. The only Sega game I've played to this day is Sonic the Hedgehog maybe once or twice as a kid, though I got it and beat it on the Virtual Console about a year ago.

Re: I've never played the N64.

I didn't enjoy any of the N64 Rare platformers. Just hate the ♥♥♥♥ out of them. Slow and boring to play, stupid ♥♥♥♥ing grating awful music, humor so immature that, as a child, I was rolling my eyes at them; what is the ♥♥♥♥ing appeal with these things? They did literally every sing thing wrong with their designs except for graphics. Even with other games I dislike, I can generally see who they could appeal to, what kind of people would enjoy the aspects I don't enjoy or be able to overcome the problems that I cannot overcome. Not these. And nobody else in the world has ever said "boo"; this isn't just an unpopular opinion, it is me standing in the face of video game culture.

(EDIT: Except for Conker. Conker was awesome.)

As far as actual tangible things that I have not done rather than what I have failed to experience, I've never really played Street Fighter. I played Mortal Kombat 2 back in the day, and didn't even care about the blood that it prided itself on. I played it because I had never played a fighting game and it was a fun new genre. I proceeded to play Clay Fighter, Soul Blade, the odd round of Tekken 3, this old Star Wars fighting game -Masters of Tera Kasi, I think it was - and ♥♥♥♥ing Shaq Fu. Never went back and played any of the Street Fighter games. Closest I've come is Tatsunoko Vs Capcom.

I've never beaten any Final Fantasy game ever. Played them all. Got to the last boss in most of them. Then I get my ass handed to me and I think "man I don't actually care enough to grind up my levels to beat this ♥♥♥♥er". I mean, I enjoy the stories all the way through but the resolution is never as interesting as the actual content. It's about the journey and not the destination, as they say.

How is it slow and boring? It's not any slower than any Zelda game or other Adventure games.

RARE N64 titles are known for having extremely involved and fitting music for every situation. The music is some of the best in the industry. In popular opinion anyway.

Zelda and other Adventure games are not platformers, first of all, and their fun is derived from more abstract things than platformers' fun.

And also because a large portion of platformers' fun comes from the feel of their movement; they need weight and momentum to feel satisfying. I should also specify that when I say that the game was slow, I'm not complaining that your guy didn't run fast enough but that the animations look like they're being played at 3/4 speed. The whole thing just felt like it was going in slow motion. The fact that your guy didn't run fast enough was a comparatively minor frustration to how slow the game itself felt. And in a wide-open collect-a-thon world, the slow feel to movement just amplifies how slow the pace of progress in the game is.

They're loud, spastic, and use grating instrument samples. For a game as slow in both pace and movement as they were used in, that is the absolute worst possible kind of music to have.

I don't want to argue about these games any further for fear of derailing the thread.
Just understand that any point you may bring up in their defense is something I hate about them because it is actually terrible and I don't know why people keep defending it.

Re: I've never played the N64.

My family must've opted for the Genesis rather than the SNES, so while I got to experience the greatness that was Sonic the Hedgehog, I missed out on games like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and others.
I have a PS2, but only for DDR and games like that, so I never played Spyro or Crash Bandicoot.
And no Xboxes for me, so no Halo, CoD, blah blah blah.

And whatever system Metal Gear Solid is on, never played that either.
Luckily as for the SNES games, and many NES games (even though I do have a NES) I can make up for that with the Virtual Console.

Re: I've never played the N64.

Mt first game system was a Gameboy Advance, and I dont have any older ones either. I've never actually played an N64 either. Every game from the N64 generation and older I've only played in ports and remakes. (Like Zelda collector's edition). I didn't even play LoZ, AoL, OoT, or MM for the first time until late 2008 I think. As far as Zelda goes, Twilight Princess was my first Zelda game and I got it in 2007. I've now played every Zelda game but OoX. I also have a slightly sad feeling that I didn't get to experience the N64/Gameboy era because I only missed it slightly. There are quite a few game that I missed during the NGC/GBA generation that I didn't play until recently and I have a slight sense of regret, but it couldn't really be helped because at the time, I didn't know much about videogames because I didn't have any resources for info. Especially Zelda games (my biggest regret for being so late). But I'm okay now, but I do lack some of that magical nostalgic feeling. But in another decade, I can be really nostalgic about the games I played in the last couple of years.

I've only played a couple of each. Only 2 Starfox and I think 2 Metroid. I quite liked the 2 Starfox games (Assault and 643D), but I really didn't like the Metroid games (3DS Ambassador titles).

Re: I've never played the N64.

I never played any PS1 games and I never owned a SNES. So I kinda missed on those (I played some of the best games inrecent years but as remakes or donwloads).

That said, the only game I regret never playing of those times is FFVII. I just have never been able to get my hands on it. Although I am sacred that it will turn out a terrrible dissapointment and a just plain bad game like Kingdom hearts was.

lol It isnt a crime as long as one is willing to try the others. You missed out on so much but at least you can go back and experience the old games.

That's a good plan. FFVII was good but just good. And it's aged very poorly thanks to ♥♥♥♥ing retarded-ass graphic design outside of battle (literally the fact that they made battles look as decent as they did proves that the horrible map graphics were a design choice and not tech limitations so there is no excuse) and spotty translation (the story's complicated enough without that interference).

As for Kingdom Hearts, if you didn't immediately want to buy it the first you heard about it, that's a pretty big red flag that it's not for you. It presents itself exactly as it is. Obviously, you already know this but I'm trying to help spare some other poor souls.
