My case is that I returned the game on the same day that I bought it, and so I went to the exact person I purchased the game from. Something like that just shouldn't happen, or at least the money they gave me shouldn't have been $30 less than the original price when I played the game for about 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, unless you go to a pawn shop, it isn't up to the guy you bought it off of how much he gives you back.

The computer gives him a price. That's all he can do.

Go to a pawn shop if you want to haggle. You'll get farther.

Pretty much this. It sucks I know at times, but its not really the store's fault. That's just how the value of a game is.

It's a mixed bag. The management ultimately decides the people who they hire, how they behave, etc., if not the store manager then the district manager. I've been in GameStops with totally competent service, I've been in ones where the employees obviously didn't give two ♥♥♥♥s at all about making a positive impression, I've been in ones where they were constantly trying to sell me stuff in the most heavy-handed, brow-beating way possible... it can go just about any way.

Yeah that's true. The Gamestop near my house does always ask about reserving or buying new games, etc. But that's just their job.

Re: Gamestop ripped you off?

This is going back a long time but when Half Life 2 came out I went with a friend to pick the game up. Since their "new" games are always open they had to put all the box contents in before giving it to my friend, only they forgot to include the slip of paper with the Steam cd key. We didn't notice that they didn't put the cd key in the box until we got to her house, and upon returning to the store to explain the situation they basically treated us like scamming criminals until they finally called the employee who served her and found out that he did in fact forget to give her the paper with the cd key. They didn't even apologize. Wasting over an hour driving to and from there + getting treated like garbage definitely warrants an apology.

Needless to say that soured me on EB Games/Gamespot. Even if they had apologized the fact that they sell you unsealed "new" games is a big enough reason for me to never buy anything there.

I'm just glad that I live in Toronto where we have the awesome store that is Game Centre. Well, there are two here.. so technically it's "stores" lol.

Re: Gamestop ripped you off?

Selling games that have been gutted and put on a shelf for display are not "new." When I want a new game, I mean a sealed one that no one outside of a factory has touched. I've bought "new" DS games that had save files on them, as well as "new" 360 and Wii games that were scratched. I've seen plenty of games that have had display only cases, why can't every game have one?

It does annoy me that GameStop allows employees to rent games intended for the costumers.

Re: Gamestop ripped you off?

Actually, at least in the Quebec ones I've been to recently, they've stopped doing that. Now all the new games they sell are factory sealed except for the last one they have in stock (the display box). I guess people complained to the company.

Re: Gamestop ripped you off?

I've been noticing a lot of games are sealed at EB around here too.

Re: Gamestop ripped you off?

You guys actually buy new games that are opened? That never happened to me. Whenever I get something from Gamestop the game is always sealed in the plastic wrap and never shows any signs of being tampered with.

This is not something unique to one store though. I've been to at least five in my area and I've never encountered any of the problems people seem to have. Maybe I'm just really lucky.

It depends. If they're new they often don't have time to open the games. That's why if I ever buy there, it's preorders - you're guaranteed to get one "fresh" (although with digital services I'm increasingly disinterested in buying boxed copies unless they really are something special).

Re: Gamestop ripped you off?

I've rarely bought any games at a Gamestop/EB Games, but mostly they've been used games and as for the employees, theyactually know about the games there and you can engage in a little conversation with them.

But personally, I prefer to buy my games from a game store called Game Buzz, or Play 'N' Trade. The place is awesome. It's in a mall near my mom's house and I always go when I have the chance. The staff there is warm and friendly, they are very knowledgeable about the games, and they still have old games. And I mean OLD. You can buy a NES, Super NES, N64, PS, PS2 and all the games and equipment for them. THEY EVEN HAVE A FRIGGIN POWER GLOVE!! Although the majority of the games are used, they discs are immaculate. They keep the discs nice and tidy and always check for scratches before putting it in the box and you can still buy used, unopened games.

Another cool part about the store is that they allow you to try out any game there for a small fee and that they aren't limited to just games. They have a bunch of shirts, sweaters, wallets, collectable candy tins, and action figures there to buy aswell. I've bought nothing but good things from them
