What if a Game had A.I. instead of A.I. (less confusing inside)

First here's some info
When it comes to games; contrary to what some people think. The A.I. that is referred to in games does not actually stand for artificial intelligence, rather it has Augmented Intelligence; which is just giving an entity a series of branches possibilities of what it does; effectively simulating intelligence.

Now that I've got that out of the Way, onto the main focus.

What if there was a game where enemies or just Non Player Characters in general where given Artificial intelligence. allowing them to learn and adapt. so you could be fighting say some guy, normally he would just fight you till one of you dies. But with A.I. he might Run away when he realizes his health is low and then come back again later but this time he has learned your techniques from the last time you fought him and fights differently in a way that counters you technique, forcing you to switch it up.
Or instead of running away he might beg for his life, or even join your side.
The possibilities are literally endless.

I would need a very powerful console, like a 10th generation console.

I don't know that existentialism is necessary for intelligence.

Anyways, I'd hope that if we ever develop true intelligence for NPCs that we never, ever, put it in violent games. It's one thing to attack something that isn't thinking, quite another when it might as well be a person.

I doubt this intelligent NPC would actually feel pain the way we do...

I like the idea that you're getting at. I've been hoping for it in video games for the longest time. Like in boss battles when you can just spam the same attack and they don't block it. It'd be cool if they learned your tendencies during battle and adapted! For example when you fight Ganon in TP and you can just abuse the back slice to beat him, it'd be cool if after 2 or 3 times of you using the back slice he would adapt and be ready for that so you'd have to switch up how you go about attacking him!

Re: What if a Game had A.I. instead of A.I. (less confusing inside)

I have never seen nor heard the term "augmented intelligence" (How does gane A.I. extend our own human intelligence?) used in place of "artificial intelligence," and I do not see why A.I. is an inappropriate term, as A.I. in the context of games is rooted (albeit loosely; some of the techniques are the same, but yes, it largely isn't "true A.I.": I'm sure you'll just see a sea of if statements when looking at the code for most NPCs in modern games) in the branch of computer science with the same name.

That aside, I would like to see A.I. techniques more heavily intwined with game development; it's the ultimate solution to the problem of keeping a game consistently interesting.

Re: What if a Game had A.I. instead of A.I. (less confusing inside)

Game AI isn't a true AI for a few reasons. The biggest is that they don't learn or adapt. They just go through flow-charts.

So the term Augmented Intelligence is used to indicate that they work fundamentally differently from how a true AI would have to work.

Yeah, but the term "augmented intelligence" already has its own definition that differs from "game A.I.'s" as it is defined by the OP.
