Mike, the biggest problem with your proposal is that you proposed this last time and nobody but Scott agreed with it, after a short discussion.
The reason being is that it best supports the way
you play, logging in once a month in a survival world, going on an adventure, and quitting until the next big craze surfaces. To my knowledge, you and about two other people do this, and the rest of us don't.
I don't have a problem with the way you play, in fact Snow and Nyx did this in Tanith about a month ago, and it sounds really fun to me; they dropped all their inventory and bush wacked through the majority of the map, and they did it in stints and it took about a week to do all that traveling.
The point is it's perfectly doable in Tanith, and I agree with DD on this, I'd rather come across the random builds of other people than the new fortresses, and the point is there will be those too in Tanith, with the way the map is growing.
If the survival map gets deleted every few months, I have no interest in playing in it, I will not build anything bigger than a dirt hut. Survival is the way I play, and my builds are meant for survival. They are designed to be mob proof and to greatly enhance my ability to survive, and thus they are useful, and not just pretty; they make use of all the features that minecraft has to offer, not just the ones that you encounter when you build a dirt hut. Buildings built in Old are beautiful but useless to me, so I have interest in my builds being kept on the server, but no interest in them being mashed into Old.
The point is that we deleted the Ark world because we wanted to make a 1.0 map and have it be more permanent, we made it because we wanted to create a map that we would keep. I'm still broken up about the ark world, and now we're talking about killing Tanith too. Honestly, I'm not sure Jeb will truly come up with anything that will make me want to scrub Tanith or start in a new world. Minecraft hasn't had a track record of becoming mind blowingly impressive except in bits in pieces, and I think you're giving the devs too much credit.
I realize the discussion is already pretty much over, but I wanted to weigh in that I'm not really interested in a new world, and I think Mike wasn't convinced yet with regards to his proposal.
edit: I'm also okay with New being deleted, but I would kind of like Port Phasmatys and the valley kept around. If nobody else is interested in Phas, I suppose I'll be okay with it going away.
I have another really good reason to want Tanith to stay around though:
I don't actually know what the future holds for Port right now. I'm processing a lot of requests right now, and it seems like a lot of people still want the town to grow. In any case, I wanted to see if a build like this was possible and if people liked the idea. It would make me very happy.
The buildings are just place holders, not meant to be huge cubes. In any case, I'll see you guys in about a week and a half
