That ONE genre

Is there a genre of games that you love, but can never be good at, no matter how hard you practice?

For me, games like Simcity. I love them to death, but I can never, ever do them right. I always end up on the wrong end of the budget and just go completely bankrupt, no matter how I try.

Even some action games like DMC3 and Bayonetta. I have to say I'm incredibly average at them. I practice and practice, but never seem to be getting any better.

Same here. I treat most action games like button mashers. When I actually manage to do well, I get cocky and IMMEDIATELY start getting my ass whooped again.

Re: That ONE genre

RTS games.

I ♥♥♥♥ING LOVE Warcraft and similar games.

But it took me like a year to complete the campaign, and even then I had to use cheats here and there, and if I try to play online, I lose like 9 out of 10 matches, and if I win, it's probably 'cause my team-mates are great and my opponents are just as bad as me.

♥♥♥♥, I'm even bad at Pikmin.

Re: That ONE genre

I'm generally not very good at very high-level action and fighting games that require constant combo-chains and such. I'm also not very good at real-time strategy; I fare much better with turn-based.

Aye me too Ysionris.
I'm mostly a button masher in these fighting games. ._.
So much buttons to remember to do a certain fighting attack including how fast you have to press to actually do the attack.

A fighting game that isn't Smash Bros., like Soul Calibur.

Re: That ONE genre

RTS
RTS games are the only games where I use speed-up and god mode cheat so yeah, I really suck at it no matter how much I practice. (Warcraft, Starcraft, Rise of Legends) I think the only RTS that I didn't use a cheat is Battle Realms because it has a very basic interface.

FPS on consoles.
I definitely suck at those unless I'm playing on the PC. The last FPS I played on a console is Syphon Filter on the PS1. Yeah, that was a long time ago and very traumatizing for me.

Likewise. I love fighting games, especially high-res sprite ones.

I also suck at them.

I used to really love RTS games, but now I just find them frustrating and difficult. They never were really about strategy, instead being about how fast you can click.

Re: That ONE genre

I've never been all that good at real time strategy games or fighting games. I've always been good against friends and the like but once I step online against people who play them religiously it's a whole different matter. It's to be expected considering how rarely I play them I guess.

Re: That ONE genre

While I do enjoy a good FPS game... not that I am looking forward to... what is it? Call of Duty 78? But I suck at any FPS game. I used to play a free FPS and I enjoyed it but I just sucked. But yeah. I do enjoy a good FPS game I just suck at them big time.

RTS. My only experience with them really is Age of Empires. I could only play on it on the easier levels though... unless you know I made a custom map and made my place an island or was just lucky to get an island.

Re: That ONE genre

RTS/TBS - I would love to be good at them, but I'm terrible with micro and macromanaging. I still enjoy the games on occasion, but I always have to play the them on the easiest difficulty. And you can forget online play.

FPS - Once again, I would love to be good at them, but I like to play games to unwind. When I play an FPS, I end up more stressed than I did before playing the game. Usually, I quit within a few rounds, but I could probably get decent at them if I practiced.

Re: That ONE genre

I love fighters, but I never stick with one long enough to get good at it. Or stick with one character to get good at him/her.

I also like games like starcraft. But I don't have the attention span to learn it.

console fps games and fighters like Marvel Vs Capcom or Street Fighter. If it's not Smash Bros or Budokai, it's hard for me to get into.

Re: That ONE genre

Most games, actually. Particularly fighters, but I'm not exceptionally good at any genre of games. Except maybe rhythm games.

I end up playing a lot of games on easier difficulties, but that's okay.

There is no game I can't get to know within 30 minuets.

But if it counts for anything, I suck at picking perks in Skyrim .

I do too. :'D

EXCEPT
EXCEPT

Mario Kart. I am good at Mario Kart.

Otherwise, I'm pretty bad at video games.
I can often be of help when it comes to puzzle solving och figuring stuff out, but when things go hectic I generally freak out.

A particular genre is survival horror.
I love the genre and I have spent many nights with friends, shouting at the TV. But as soon as the controller is mine, we're all screwed.

My nerves are insane, I guess. @ ___________ @

Re: That ONE genre

I'm terrified of survival horror. The only one I've ever played is Catherine, and I only found out halfway through that it was technically classified as such, and then I was like "aw geez aw geez"

Don't ever let me touch Silent Hill. Why do I even own Amnesia?

Re: That ONE genre

I think with enough practice, anyone can get good at most genres of games. Except maybe fighting games, first-person shooters, and rhythm games. Some people just can't get good at those types of games no matter how hard they try.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl kind of ruined fighting games for me. I was so used to the incredibly simple mechanics of a party "fighting" game, that I had sort of lost my other fighting game skills (Blaz Blue, Street Fighter, Marvel v Capcom, etc.) which require, well, a lot more skill to play. I never really recovered since.
