the only way i could see this go well is if AAA games go to 30$ or less wich may actually be good for the industry so that the best buisness stratagy is to make games with replay value and longevity and replay value instead of milking franchises ... or its just SONY ♥♥♥♥ting on its consumers

Maybe this could potentially lower the cost of games? If so, I'd be completely fine with this. I can hardly afford games on my own, and this could change that. I can't imagine they would last more than 30 seconds or happen very often either.

I don't think any of you realize the real reason why they would do this.

It's so the PS4 can cost the consumer less than $1,000.

Really, though, the better way to implement this is to slip ads into loading screens. Interrupting gameplay is just sheer asshattery.

It would be better if the ads shows up during loading, I'll be fine with that.
Or the old school ads in games where they put up billboard signs in the game, usually with modern sandbox games like GTA and sports games.

There's the possibility that this is only for certain types of games.

How many patents go unimplemented? Oh thats right, alot.

With the games that have massive loading times, if they ran a quick ad while they loaded, I wouldn't care.

And if it really got that bad, I'd just disconnect from the internet, and then no advertisements for me, unless they somehow implement them inside the games coding, which would be a waste of time.

Pausing the gameplay to show advertisements would be the worst idea the gaming industry has concocted since quick time events. I can deal with billboard ads in-game or even ads during the loading screen, but pausing the game is taking it way too far.

Not every patent becomes a reality.

Apple patented putting ads into Mac OS X, so that you would have to watch an ad before continuing to use the software. Obviously it didn't happen.

Disgusting.

Not so fast! What made you think could disconnect from the internet for this game? Surely it wasn't because you were playing a single-player title?

You don't, but there'd be more flexibility with ads over a live connection. You could update and replace old ads with newer, relevant ones.

Of course ads could also be updated via game updates and not necessarily need a live connection, but if games start requiring live connections- which won't surprise me a bit- you won't be able to circumvent ads, regardless of whether or not they're streamed live or stored on-disc.

Also, anyone could opt out of periodic game updates, but you can't opt out of a live connection if it's required, which could allow Sony to more easily deter and patch tampering with on-disc ads among other things (namely piracy).

Yet again, it feels good to be a PC gamer. Advertisements in games? We got mods for that.

I hand over my money to play a finished and polished product. Locked DLC on the disc and now ads is certainly not the way to go. Son'y videogame sector isn't doing too swell right now. They better watch out. Soon Nintendo will be the only one of the "Big Three" not pissing (please forgive the language) on gamers.

If there's a nice guy among the console makers it's not Nintendo.

Meh, I have got so many games I haven't played that if next generation I participate in is the last generation it probably wouldn't matter, as I have most likely years-worth of games I have never played that I would want to.

Patents do not mean a company is doing something or even is considering doing it. Large companies often file tons of patents just to prevent others from doing it first. This way Sony can charge any other companies that want to do the same thing and keep the option open for themselves in the future. It does absolutely not indicate that they are definitely planning on implementing this system.
