PLEASE let this be for the 3DS! I'm so ♥♥♥♥ing excited for this right now...there hasn't been a decent 2D Metroidvania title since Order of Ecclesia. Lords of Shadow wasn't bad for a 3D game...but it had its flaws. Now two years later, they're gonna give us a new game. I can't wait!
Here's a rough google-fu translation for anybody too lazy to do it themselves:
Konami is currently working on a 3DS-exclusive Castlevania game called Castlevania: Mirror of Fate. After the highly successful Nintendo DS parts Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia Nintendo 3DS owners can therefore look forward to a brand new handheld adventure in the Castlevania series.
There is content and gameplay is nothing known of the game, but in the corridors is said to a 2D Castlevania concerns of development studio Mercury Team, previously Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has made for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The only thing at this moment is certain is that David Cox, producer of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and Enric Álvarez, Director / Writer of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and co-founder of Team Mercury, the game works.
Konami, the game at E3 this year, taking place from 5 to 7 June, officially reveal.
* UPDATE 21/05/2012 * 8:51 p.m.
Although Konami asked us to retrieve the original message offline, we have found proof that alternative proof Castlevania: Mirror of Fate is in development for the Nintendo 3DS. To justify it we put online this message again.
Witness this link and this link are both Castlevania Castlevania Mirroroffate.com Mirroroffate.net as registered by Konami. Indeed - and not Mirror Mirror of Fate or Faith. This explains as the earlier comment from Konami that we had made a typo in the title. It is this law that put the unveiling of the game online again
Soo I guess the dudes from LoS are behind this. I'm...not sure I like that. LoS was fun but it didn't feel like Castlevania. Hopefully they'll stick closer to the classic Castlevania formula with this release though. I'm really hoping it'll be a Classicvania, but chances are it's gonna be yet another MetroidVania.
Also, slightly off topic yo, but what game does someone suggest to get into the franchise?
Depends if you want traditional Castlevania, Metroidvania, or the 3D iterations.
Traditional Castlevania are 2D sidescrollers that, while linear, usually have hidden pathways and such. The focus is on making it to the end of the stage, while killing monsters in your way. There are boss fights and such at certain points which are generally challenging. I personally like Super Castlevania IV in this style.
Metroidvania is a marriage of the labyrinth style of exploration found in the 2D Metroids, plus some RPG elements. Most of these games are fairly non-linear, and the focus is mainly on exploration. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was the first Castlevania in this style, and it's one of the best.
The 3D ones have been a mixed bag, with the focus of the games shifting every couple of games. The better 3D ones are Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, though I personally don't care much for the 3D games.
Haku will say this:
"The haiku inspires passion,
though the method tires."
Castlevania: Mirror of Fate is practically confirmed for the 3DS, and Paul Gale – a video games journalist – has shared the first details about the game. Supposedly, the game has been in development for over a year and a half and will feature “two different playable characters” and “co-operative play with the prospect of 3DS and Wii U being able to interact with each other”.
The game will be a 2D experience and will have “creative ways to utilize the 3DS’ cameras”, meaning:
The forward facing camera will act as a mirror and the outward facing cameras will come into play for a new puzzle solving mechanic.
(This is the reason for the game’s “Mirror of Fate” sub-title.)
This seems like a done deal, and with only a couple of weeks until E3 2012, it shouldn’t take long before we hear more about it. Who’s excited?
The heroes in Mirror of Fate will be Trevor Belmont and Simon Belmont.
The story will pick up 25 years after the end of Lords of Shadow, which is a spoiler in its own, and Trevor sets out to defeat Dracula. The story will stretch across time and players will eventually gain control over Simon Belmont.
Best of all, it will use gameplay elements from the NES classic Dracula's Curse. For example: multiple characters to play as. Which is good since this game has co-op.
Trevor will use a Combat Cross, while Simon will use the classic Belmont Family whip.
