Re: |OT| General Gaming Arcadia: Big adventure? Let me just get my fez.

If any of you might recall, a couple years ago Greyhound misplaced some of my baggage and I never saw it again. Among my things were some DS games. I just now found Chrono Trigger DS in its case while cleaning my bedroon, and I thought it was among my things los by Greyhound. But it's not.

This pleases me very, very much.

You found a game you had thought you lost years ago... in its case?

Why wouldn't that be the first place you'd look?

It usually is the first place I look. But the case had been missing this whole time, so I had assumed that Chrono Trigger DS was among those that were lost.

Re: |OT| General Gaming Arcadia: Big adventure? Let me just get my fez.

I've been stuck on this one battle for a week now; I nearly broke my 3DS eight times.

I finally beat it today, but then I realized: What if it's like the last time I got stuck, and the thing after is fifty times worse?

I don't wanna play anymore. ;-;

Playing Devil Survivor 2, btw.

TERA Online is going to be 50% off on Amazon this Saturday, but even though it's a digital game code, it's only being sold to US customers. Would anyone here be comfortable buying it and giving me the code, and being paid back via PayPal or equal value in Steam games?

Yeah, I hardly ever get the BIG limited editions, but I was willing to splurge for that one. A whole lot of stuff, and the first Borderlands was great; this is easily one of my most hyped games of the year.

Plus it's only $138 AUD, which is a nice surprise. I was expecting them to crank it up to $200-$250 down here.

So yeah, I got the new indie royale bundle The All-Charity Pack - Indie Royale and now have an extra steam key for Osmos. So if anyone wants it just PM/ VM me and its yours, as long as you don't already have it (because its a shame for it to go to waste). Whoever messages me first gets it.

Yeah, its been claimed.

PoP: Forgotten Sands (DS) Review

So. I came into possession of a certain game recently. Specifically, the DS version of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. I had put off sticking it into my DS for a while for a variety of reasons, but sheer boredom made me give in yesterday.

Now y'see, this game - being a side-make of the doubtlessly superior versions on the various home consoles - was something I expected to be sub-par, but curiosity got the better of me.

To begin, the entire game is controlled via the touch screen, with the only other things to do anything being the start button and the camera (should you be using a DSi or 3DS). A side-scrolling game, movement is done by tapping and/or holding various points on the screen: Hold to move, double tap to roll, tap up to climb a ledge or wall, and tap down to lower the Prince down a ledge or to go from hanging to falling. There's also pushing blocks, but that doesn't happen much.

The spirit in the Prince's sword (whose name I forget) has three abilities: Rewind, which sets the world back around five seconds, but its not consistent. It also doesn't effect moving aspects of the scenery in the ways you'd expect, but that's a minor issue, all things considered. The second ability is to slow down everything except the Prince and anything he's directly effecting, such as blocks he's pushing. No issues here. The third and final ability is two-fold. The second aspect the player is exposed to is simple: Every now and then you'll encounter a small ball of sand, which can then be moved to activate buttons, hit certain obstacles out of the way, and later to control nearby enemies (although losing control of the Prince in the process). Different enemies have different abilities, but there isn't really much bad here that isn't already covered by things I'm going to say soon about attacking. The first aspect of this third ability, which you hopefully noticed I skipped over earlier, is to turn certain areas of sand solid for a short time, to use them as either walls or ropes to climb, depending on their form. This is done by scratching the stylus up and down quickly (to use the equivalent term from The World Ends With You, although the less patient of you out there really will be scratching the screen before long) on the sand in question. This is not distinguished from movement whatsoever however, so be prepared to fall off many ledges and walls while you try to make more sand solid.

Last of the game mechanics is attacking. Early in the game, the sword spirit thing gives a short tutorial about attacking, most of which you'll forget halfway through the first world. (I say "world", but it's identified once as being someplace in India. Whatever.) What I can recall of it now though is that basic attacking is to slash the enemy. There's also tapping the enemy, which will cause the Prince to jump over it (then you need to slash it to actually attack), and holding the stylus on the Prince, which causes him to guard, or if done for only the moment when the enemy attacks, to parry their attack. Only the basic slash is ever required, and combined with the ability to slow time, makes everything very easy. Controlled enemies attack only through the slashing movement... even if they're archers. Go figure. The issue with all of this however is that the game will only sometimes recognize that you're trying to slash. This was especially bad after gaining the make-sand-solid ability, despite their differences. Could've been my imagination, but I doubt it.

As for the game itself... It was short. You know how I said I started playing yesterday? Well I also finished yesterday. The game took me less than five hours to go from the start with having little idea how to play, to the final boss. Plus beating two of the four bonus levels, which are slightly harder versions of other levels already beaten.

So yeah. I just wanted to come here to share how bad I thought this game was. It's playable, but even the original Prince of Persia games were better, graphical limitations notwithstanding. I expect that if the developers had allowed for standard, non-touchscreen controls, then this game would have been much better... albeit still terribly short.

Final verdict: 3/10. Cons: Bad controls, mediocre graphics (for a DS game), and general unresponsiveness. Pros: Although this game certainly wasn't the first to do either of them in some form, both of the two time-based abilities were executed decently.

Re: |OT| General Gaming Arcadia: Big adventure? Let me just get my fez.

So I just started playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and so far, I'm not too impressed. I really don't like the addition of regenerating health instead of Deus Ex's directional damage system. It changes the game's feel completely, and the combat sections just feel like Gears of the Battlefield: Black Ops. I'll stick around to see how the stealth holds up, but so far I haven't been too impressed.

I keep finding myself speaking in Jensen's voice whenever I play the game though.

Re: |OT| General Gaming Arcadia: Big adventure? Let me just get my fez.

The price of the DSi has dropped to 100$ and the DSiXL to 130$. Considering the XLs were still selling decently well (at least when I still worked at a game store) when they were the same price as the 3DS expect a large increase in sales for the two. Good move that should've been done a while ago.

Ok, I've always been mostly a WRPG fan and I'm trying to get into JRPGs a bit more.

Can somebody recommend some good JRPGs for either the original Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, Wii, or PC? And please leave out Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts; I want something different. I'm in particular looking for interesting and unique stories; I'm willing to forgive gameplay flaws if the story is good.

PS2: Persona 3 FES & Persona 4. It's usually a matter of opinion as to which one is better story-wise (for a first-time player), but the latter is generally accepted to have better game mechanics.

Hunt down a copy of Chrono Cross and a PS1 memory card if you haven't one already to play on your PS2.

It's best if you've played Trigger first, mind you, but Trigger doesn't really have the kind of interesting and unique story you're asking for.
