Sony's Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale

Gotta say, I have absolutely zero interest in this game. It just seems so cheap and so LTTP. It's like, Link vs Kirby vs Mario is understandable, but this game might as well be Pyramid Head vs Kermit vs Gex . It makes no sense.

Gex would be awesome.

When can we start expecting Mario Party esque games with Kratos, Fat Princess, Sly Cooper, Sweet Tooth, and the gang?

You want a game where you can hit start, walk away for an hour and still have the possibility of winning? I think one of those is enough.

Replace Mario, Toad, Luigi, and Daisy in this picture with Kratos, Sly, Sweeth Tooth and Jak or something and there's no way it's not hilarious.



That's why I want to see a Mario Party esque game. Plus everyone knows the only reason people play Mario Party is to have an excuse to yell at your friends and feel the black flames of hate consume you. It's also the only time where calling Peach a whore is completely acceptable outside of Mario Kart.

The whole "SONY RIPPIN OFF NINTENDO" dickslap argument is goddamn old. How about we chill our tits? Fanboys are the worst type of people.

For all of you wanting a Mario Party-esque game, Crash Bash says hi.

Crash Bash is pretty sweet but if I'm not mistaken it doesn't even have Gex so fudge it.

Why would you associate Gex with Sony? His first game was also on the 3DO (first, I might add) and Saturn, the second two were both on the N64 as well as the PlayStation. Gex was a multiplatform series from start to finish.

Also, the whole trilogy sucked ass and even just the character was stupid and annoying, so I don't know why you want it so bad.

Gex would just be hilarious to have in the roster, enough said.

I don't think I will be buying this game day one. I'm goin to let this one slide and see how well it does and how well the online works and what not.

For the time being, Smash Bros Project M will satisfy my liking.

I'm not very emotionally invested in the making of this game. I view it as a natural course that was going to be taken sooner or later, if not by Sony then by some other company who saw how Smash held a unique spot in the scenery of gaming and wanted in on the action.

I don't think it's a downfall to emulate a style of gameplay that people seem to enjoy, and Smash Bros. had something pretty good going on with its four player platformer/fighting style. I know I've seen some games that "resemble" Smash Bros. (the multiplayer mode of Force Unleashed II comes to mind) but I don't think any of them have actually gone this close to Smash Bros. before. I think that the closer it gets, the more it's going to benefit from it... on a gameplay level, at least.

Is it a rip-off, though? Well, from what I've seen it's so close in style and concept that it's certainly in range of being a rip-off, much like the Playstation Move was in range of being called a rip-off of the Wii remote. At best, you could call it a "tribute" or "heavily inspired" game, because it's clearly beyond "slightly inspired" or even "moderately inspired". This game would most certainly not exist at all had it not been for Smash Bros. My point is that that isn't a bad thing.


EDIT: That said, I wouldn't be surprised if we never hear the developers or spokespersons of Sony acknowledging this. It'd take a massive amount of guts and confidence (not to mention humility) to admit that their game was inspired by a series like Super Smash Bros. I don't think it's going to be beneficial to them to pretend that Super Smash Bros. doesn't even exist, but I can understand why.

Just looking at the initial screenshots I think they should try to get the characters to contrast with and stick out a bit more from the backgrounds.

I enjoy Smash-like games. This is relevant to my interests.

Art is a hotbed interconnected inspiration. One does not and can not "ripoff" something; the mere homage should, in fact, be a selling point to those familiar.

They pop more than Brawl's did.

Speaking of Gex, someone on NeoGAF found this on IMDB. I have no idea how IMDB gets their information, or if they're even reliable, but here it is. I'm taking it for a grain of salt right now, but hey, it's fun to speculate.

If it's true, Crash, Spyro, Gex, and Rayman are in (along with the obvious ones like Jak, Ratchet, and Cole). Keep in mind that if it's true, not all of the characters listed may be playable. Bentley's already been seen in the game, but he's part of Sly's level 3 super, and Qwark is part of the Ratchet and Clank stage.

It seems to be in line with a recent interview with the director of the game though.

He says in that interview that they listened to the fans when it came to characters, and they haven't had any issues getting third party characters. Crash and Spyro I would assume would be the first two third party characters they'd try to get in, and if they were among the first third party characters, and they haven't had any issues with third parties yet, then they both may actually be in.

Anyway, as long as Sony gives credit to the Smash Bros. series and not treat their game like it's completely new and original, then that's fine.

A rip-off, to me, is only worth calling a rip-off if it ends up being a bad game. Otherwise, I just call it something along the lines of "blatant/shameless clone", which doesn't necessarily make the game all that bad unless it hinders the effort that could have otherwise been put into the game compared to what the game is a blatant clone of. I question the necessity of a game like this, sure, and I suppose that's why-as Abyss Master said-I don't exactly feel inclined towards emotionally investing into this game right now, but when it comes to games that are clearly inspired by something else to the point of being a blatant copy and/or rip-off, I only ask they don't skimp out on effort just because it's so clearly copying something that it'd be a waste of time and effort to hide it. I trust Sony is more than self-aware with the direction the game is being put into in the same way Sega probably was when they made Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing; not letting the fact that they're clearly and intentionally copying another series get in the way of making the game fun.
