The future of the gaming industry.

Ok we have been dealing with a lot of corporate bull♥♥♥♥♥ over the course of the last 2 months the mass effect 3 ending, The Street fighter x tekken Dlc controversy, the Concept of Drm on consoles.
Here the question:
Do we need to pull the reset button or not?
Well let see what will happen in the future if this continues.
1. DRM on both consoles:
I ♥♥♥♥♥in hate DRM because it the worst form of anti piracy these days, It forces you to get a new copy of the game because the game can't be install on multiple computers because it also design to prevent people from buying used game meaning you have to get a fresh copy of the game so if DRM on Consoles existed that means video game retails like gameshop and Game is gonna be shut down because their business probably get a quarter of their money from used games.

2. Companies and their bull♥♥♥♥♥ DLC policies:
Capcom, EA, Even Square enix these days have some of the worse DLC policies in the gaming industry because most of their DLC is content that should be in the game and most of them are stuff that nobody actually want like extra street fighter costumes, pointless Weapons but the biggest reason why these companies have awful DLC policies is that refered as the real ending of a game that sold separatly(I'm looking at you bioware and capcom).

3. Unoriginal developers:
Since the Xbox generation has started developershave became extremely unoriginal with their games especially activision and Capcom.
It seams that developers believe believe no matter how similar the sequal are to the original people are gonna still buy the game(thank you call of duty and assasins creed for beginning this trend) Nintendo has also been doing this with the mario spinoffs and Crappy zelda game *Flame shield on* are the same.

4. The raise of The FPS kid stereotype:
So you have been a team fortress veteren since launch, you were enjoying a simple match until some like this came along:
Angry Modern Warfare 2 Kid (Halo 3 Machinima) - YouTube
Yeah something like that these kind players will scream into the microphone loudly, maybe sniper you as a recon in battlefield multiplayer, Do imature stuff like friendly fire for exam, Uses a USAS 12 to go on a kill streak on your team with the overpowered piece of ♥♥♥♥♥.

Does everyone here think that there should be an other video game crash?

My little brother is exactly like that, albeit a little more violent. -_-

Considering that developers don't profit from used game sales, why shouldn't they make an effort to ensure people buy new copies?

Assassin's Creed hardly started this trend. Call of Duty, yes. Halo, yes. Assassin's Creed? No. And there has yet to be a "crappy" Mario or Zelda game. Nintendo has been moving each series to new and exciting places, from Galaxy to Skyward Sword.

Really? You think Halo helped start this trend?

Also find it amusing how you said AC didn't help start this trend when it really did.

I hate to drop in just to bash AC, but it is possibly the worst series I have ever seen. Since ACII, Ubisoft have conned people into buying half a game, with little to no relevance to the actual story. They con you into believing the game has some overall significance, but it doesn't. It's just Ezio prancing around on rooftops again. I was bored of him by the end of ACII, as is everyone else I know.

also, your mention on the Used Games market. They are well within their right to kill that market. Most retailers offer no royalties to the original developers, the only one I think that might do it are CeX, which is uncertain. So people are buying their games, and then not getting any profit for them. For the likes of Activision or whoever the hell makes CoD these days, these is great. They get the mindless masses pre ordering their generic shooter. But for lesser known companies, who just make neat little RPGs here and there, or maybe a Racing game. It's fatal. It kills indie developers who are growing and making original gaming. That's basically the whole reason XBLA and whatever PSN have is growing so rapidly. It allows indie devs to make games without the worry that they're getting conned out of their money.

Assassin's Creed 1 came out in 2007. Assassin's Creed II came out in 2009. Not only has this 'trend' been active since long before 2009, but Creed II actually changed a lot from the first one. Besides the story and the parkour gameplay, the whole structure of the gameplay is different from the first one. It wasn't until Brotherhood, less than 2 years ago, that they adopted this worrying trend.

How exactly then did Halo 3 change more from Halo 2 than Assassin's Creed II did from Assassin's Creed. Personally, I don't think either series is to blame really, but to single out Assassin's Creed over Halo is just ignorant.

Sequels that are exactly like the the first game on the franchise have been around since the NES days.

No one is to blame for anything, especially not something recent.

I don't really see why they should get royalties off of a product that was already purchased. Do used car sales bring revenue back to Honda or GM? If I sell my phone off craigslist should I feel guilty that I'm not giving that money back to Samsung or HTC? This vendetta against used games is completely stupid.

There are two types of people who trade in their used games. You have the ones who are being economical and those who didn't care enough about your game to keep it. The economical ones will never be enough in numbers to cannibalize on new game sales unless the game was selling like ♥♥♥♥ on display in the first place.

The real reason why indie game developers are on markets such as steam, xbla and psn is not because of used game sales. These venues are a low cost entry point for mass market distribution and publication. That's the real reason it's so popular. None of this being conned out of their money bull♥♥♥♥.

Because it has anti-consumer results. It takes away a degree of control from the gamer that he or she isn't ready to get rid of (considering that they paid for it, they should be allowed to maintain some degree of control over it).

You have to make games that people don't want to re-sell before you can take away their ability to re-sell without them kicking and screaming.

if Samsung or HTC could stop people selling their phones, they would. They can't, without extensive work or problems bordering on a breach of civil rights, but they certainly would. But to a games company, Used Games Sales is worse than Pirating. A lot of people who pirate that I know of will buy a pirated game if they thought it was good enough. However why would a used game customer? they've already got the game. It's not stupid, it's allowing companies to get the money that they think they deserve. They are well within their right to do so, and there's very little you can do to stop them. If they sell a product, then why shouldn't they ensure they get money when you use their products? Sure, networks like XBL are considered a monopoly as it is, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Um.. I've played all four and it started with ACII. The original is the only game where the story and mission structure were different. The following three games were quite similar and didn't do much to change the formula.

I think you need to look at the changes from Halo 1 to 2 and from 3 to Reach to see where the big changes happened. Also, your point about ignorance is... well... lol.

How is buying and selling used games wrong? Why are you demonizing the consumer for choosing how to spend and save their money? Used games aren't some awful black market. Consumers are well with in their right to utilize their money how they want. When you a used game is bought sure your not seeing the money from that but you're also not manufacturing another disk and making a new copy for them either. Used game sales are hardly the bane of the gaming world. Those copies have to be bought before they are sold again. They got money for that copy already. What you said about piracy vs used market is the same for any market. If you buy a used car why would you then buy that car new? Same for any used market yet they still exist do they not?

The difference is that companies tend to endorse the resale of used cars. Half the used cars people buy come from certified dealerships, meaning that the company producing those cars still receives a profit for them.

Used games are not endorsed by the developers. The only one who profits fro mthe sale of used games is the store, a la Gamestop or Best Buy. Those used game sales detract from the developer's earnings and impact the amount of money they make from a product they created.

Re: The future of the gaming industry.

The whole used games are bad mantra is pretty stupid. Literally every other industry has the sale of used goods (eg. movies, books, cars, furnishings, TVs, phones, all other electronics, houses), but noooo video games are different. lol give me a ♥♥♥♥ing break.

I shouldn't have to give a developer a penny for a used game any more than I should have to give an architect more for building a used house that I'm buying. He got his money for that house just like the developer got money for that copy of the game. Maybe if the developer made a game that people actually thought was worth keeping they wouldn't be in such financial straits

As for the future of gaming it looks bright, indie developers have more freedom and opportunities than they've had since ever, we have cheaper games than in the past (eg. 100$ N64 games, today 60% for a new game), DRM? meh, just crack that ♥♥♥♥ and move on.

As for the future of used game sales it'll probably be like they do with Madden (you have to buy a code to play a used game online, which sucks but whatever.)

But that isn't the gamer's fault. So why does the gamer need to pay for the developer's mistake?

This is the entertainment industry. It is inherently detrimental to the industry and the concept of entertainment as a whole when the aim is profiting off of every sale rather than gathering and maintaining interest (which is basically what entertainment is).

I could buy Super Mario World used today, and be able to play a new game.

I cannot buy Resident Evil: The Mercenaries used in 20 years, and be able to play a new game.

There's your answer.

Except it's not some easy come, easy go business. The video games industry is, and always will be, about making money. Used games don't help that cause, which will discourage developers in the long run and lead to things like the rumored DRM measures on the PS4.

Re: The future of the gaming industry.

The only possibly relevant difference between the used game market and other used markets that I've become aware of is the fact that software doesn't tend to suffer the same kind of degradation that non-software does, such as cars and couches. I'm still not convinced that that fact alone warrants that the markets be treated fundamentally differently, however.

Re: The future of the gaming industry.

Honestly, I think the industry is going to see a major collapse soon.

If you like to keep yourself updated on video game news, you'll noticed that many, many studios have either been shut down or are facing serious financial trouble. The only ones that seem reasonably stable are the big boy companies, like Activision, EA, Valve, Nintendo, Capcom; and even they have had their fair amount of hardships this gen. Also, take into account that the Japanese gaming industry has suffered this gen, and is in far worse condition than studios situated in the west.

Perhaps one of the greatest problems revolves around budget. It doesn't help that the budgets for big blockbuster games are beyond ridiculous now. So much that a single flop is enough to destroy an entire studio now. And the fact that the major 3rd parties are only asking for a huge increase in power for next gen consoles doesn't help the situation either.

I don't even want to bring in DLC or DRM into this discussion. We know how bad these things are already, and they're only going to get worse in the long run.

tldr; the gaming industry is biting more then they can chew.

I would say that the FPS/M-rated trend began as early as 2000 and became apparently obvious by 2004. GTA: San Andreas, SOCOM, Call of Duty, Halo, Half-Life, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Splinter Cell and several others. Sure, FPS game were always popular prior to this age, but not so much to the point that devs were willing to sacrifice many of their own IPs to make room for FPS games. And by that, I mean a major decline for platformers and other E-rated fare. PS2 gen was the fall of the platformer. This gen has been the fall of the JRPG.
