Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

A lot of games I hyped ended up disappointing me, but I think that was just because the games themselves were disappointing.

I hyped TP. Worst 3D Zelda.
I hyped Brawl. Got bored of it relatively quickly and went back to the much better Melee.
I Hyped FFXIII. I enjoyed it. It wasn't my favorite title, but I wasn't disappointed.
I hyped Jak 3, and I loved it.
I hyped Kingdom Hearts II and I loved it.

I didn't hype SS. It's one of the best games I've played in years.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

It's not the overhyping itself, it's the fanboyism that result from all the overhyping.

Case in point: Skyward Sword.

Fanboys: A REVIEWER CAN'T BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY IF THEY GAVE THE GAME A 7/10. ZELDA IS GOD AND 7 IS BAD.

Me: Calm down, 7 isn't all that bad.

Fanboys: WHATAREYOUTALKINGABOUTYOUOBVIOUSLYDON'TKNOWANYTHIN GYOUSTUPID♥♥♥♥ LURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

I thought that thread was about the reviewer being factually incorrect about the controls because he was actually controlling the game wrong.

If that's the case then his opinion shouldn't be taken seriously. It would be like trusting a food critic that gives a restaurant a low score because of instead of eating the steak, he was trying to put it in his ass.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

Sure, that's what the thread was about. But it didn't stop fanboyism from occurring anyways.

There were a lot of mature reactions towards the guy's grading, but whether he was right or wrong is irrelevant when we're talking about the immature ways others reacted. And it wasn't just that thread. I'm talking about all over.

I can't think about Skyward Sword without thinking back to that ♥♥♥♥. It's like farting over my good steak.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

Well, I haven't read any gaming magazines in over 2 years and I don't visit any gaming websites, so it's kind of impossible for me to get hyped up about a game.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

Eh I suppose. I only poked my nose in that thread a couple times because the Zelda section is a post apocalyptic wasteland of stupid, but for the most part it seemed like people were saying he couldn't be taken seriously because he didn't understand how to sync the controller.

on topic: no, hype doesn't ruin a game for me. I generally just take things for what they are.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

Hyping games only ruins them if they are mediocre. Like, for example Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Even if I hadn't hyped it, I still wouldn't have enjoyed it as much because it just wasn't as good. The character roster would have disappointed me either way and the single player mode especially. With those two things being mediocre, the whole replay value is ruined for me.

However, then there are games like Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal, which I hyped up to an incredible amount and they were still great. And G/S/C are still my favorite Pokemon games, even though I hyped them up a great deal.

Some sequels just suck... and hyping them or not hyping them won't change it.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

I was so hyped for Brawl. And when it finally came out I loved it so much! Only, I couldn't afford a Wii because I was saving up to be a missionary. So I played it every once in a while at a game store and participated in two tournaments (even making fourth place once! I lost to Yoshi in Sudden Death, which ended the tournament for me ;_; ). I also was hyped by all the discussion in the threads here on ZU. It was gonna be the perfect multiplayer game! Sure, I was going away on a mission, but I'd be back and engage in the good times with all my ZU buddies!

So I went to Argentina as a missionary. When I came back a little over a year and a half later, I finally got a Wii with Brawl. In fact, I got Brawl instead of my beloved Super Mario Galaxy because I was so hyped to play multiplayer with my friends here on ZU! But guess what?

ZU Brawl was dead. Everyone had moved on. It was just a stupid fad that I had missed.

Yeah, I'm still awful sore about that.

Sometimes hyping doesn't hurt the experience at all though. Despite my very high expectations of Okami and Donkey Kong Country Returns, both turned out to be excellent games.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

Most of the time Overhype is bad bt in a way I guess it can be good for developpers.
I mean yeah we urge to play a game and then we get a little dissapointed (E.g. Skyward Sword T^T) But in the end we helped the developpers out by both buying their games and sqealing like little girls about it.

At the time when Twilight Princess was coming out, at first I was about to over hype it and then news of the Wii came out and I began to hype about that instead, I guess thats what saved TP for me, to date its my favorite Zelda game. And then the Wii had all sorts of fun games to ophold its hype for a few months, so in the end I was never dissapointed back in 2006.

I also think overhyping can overshadow/hurt really good games that just happen to be released around the same time as a hyped games. People can become so hyped about a game that they totally ignore a gem of a game that might even better than the hyped game. There's another side of the issue.

I know. For example, Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The hype was so great for those games that when Goldeneye 007: Reloaded came out, a game I actually wanted to play, everyone was off playing those so the online multiplayer for Reloaded was terrible. I remember waiting for a half hour or longer in trying to get into matches. I fell asleep, woke up, and nothing happened.

Great game, terrible online. That being due to lack of people actually playing it. Thanks Mw5 hype for ♥♥♥♥ing up a shooter that I actually wanted to enjoy. >.>

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

Call of Duty hype has always flummoxed me for the sole reason that they're the same game released every year with minor engine, weapon, and map changes. It would be like getting hyped for a re-release of the Harry Potter books where J. K. Rowling only changed a few words in the entire series.

Re: Does Overhyping Ruin Games For You?

I think Call of Duty needs to stop releasing a new game every year, and put more time into the games they are developing. I think this could possibly add more variety to the gameplay than just changing the maps, weapons, and such.
