Character re-designs. The good, the bad, and...probably just the bad.

Has there ever been a change in a character design that struck you as particularly good/bad? Anywhere from simple proportional differences (ie Classic/Modern Sonic), to a difference in art style, or a complete overhaul from the ground up. Are there any favorites/least favorites you'd care to point out? To start, I'll give an example that kind of goes with both art style, and complete rehaul:

Simon Belmont, the original Castlevania protagonist, who went from this, to this, and then...that thing from that fighting game.

There's more Belmonts where that came from for sure, but share your thoughts.

The blocky style just doesn't suit Banjo and Kazooie. :< Their old look was much better, in all honesty:

Well, this just made my morning. Bahaha. So true, though. HGSS Gold looks like some kind of femboy wuss. GSC Gold was a straight baller.

I'm just picturing Red shielding himself from a downpour of Donphans.

Also, I feel the need to contribute. Another bad character redesign: Pols Voice used to look pretty adorable in the older games. PH made it look to "tough" if you ask me.

Dante. I don't have problems with the new DmC, but I think they changed Dante WAAAY too much it's like it's not Dante anymore.

See here. Dante have always had that smirk on his face and look much more laid back.


This Dante looks like a British punk rock star and very emo-ish. He also looks angry at the whole world. His face doesn't match his moves.

^They cleaned him up, actually. He doesn't look like that anymore. He looks alright now.



I like his DMC4 look



or DMC1 look much more than his DMC3 look. Though when you unlock the DMC1 look for 3, it was awesome. Also, his DMC2 design looked pretty cool as well.

I think I like the DMC1 look most of all.



Also NT's DmC is ♥♥♥♥ed because of all the steps back they took in technology and gameplay. But that's for another thread.

^ Thankfully Namco didn't actually go ahead with the redesign after fan outcry.

Fire Emblem characters in general


^ Fire Emblem characters have always been anime in style, but never quite this badly. At least they always looked like they belonged in a proper fantasy world, but now this super-clean, oddly-dressed look is..... ergh.

Advance Wars art in general


^ The games went from goofy and colorful to generically "dark and gritty". Booooooring.

I KNOW Bad Box Art MegaMan is a joke, but it's the timing of that joke (after the cancellation of MegaMan games and shunning him in general) that irritates me. Otherwise the joke would be hilarious.

Spyro the Dragon is a character that's been through a number of changes. Most of them weren't too bad, and he even looked a little cool in his last big series even if I wasn't a fan of them. The rougher adult look was a nice design from the original young dragon os the PS series... at least until Skylanders appeared.

Oh, don't talk to me about Spyro. That game died soon after the PS2 came into being.

He looks like he can be ridden, the red saddle is actually a saddle where Mario can sit. He's not erected at all, and he has tiny T-Rex type of arms.


Now this is the new Yoshi:


Erected, he can fully stand up, and got "normal" arms. Also the saddle is now like a shell with a bump.
How can Mario sit in this? :

I imagine it's a comfy cushion.

The art wasn't lazy. The art was gorgeous, if simple. There's beauty to be found in simplicity, though. Also, you took an actual character model adn compared it to a drawing of OoA Link.
