A concept that should exist in action adventure video games.

Imagine this:
"instead of being limited to paths and mountain. you could explore the overworld as far to the beach, you could freely roam forests, climb those background mountain.
Imagine that in a 3d action adventure game where you could have a very large overworld that let you explore around without loading screens between areas and linear pathways to follow.
also imagine that.
If the console of the future get any more powerful in future in terms of disc size and hard drive size, I'll put this idea in my game.

Well, WoW does exactly that.

Definitely possible with today's technology.

Unless you only play call of duty games, you must be clueless. Skyrim is an amazing free roam game that lets you do anything and go anywhere right after the first mission. The only loading times are when going indoors or going outside.

We've been able to do that since the early 90's.... Hell Daggerfalls world map was twice the size of Great Britian.

Re: A concept that should exist in action adventure video games.

We already have this. In tons of games.

What I WOULD want though, is DMC3/4/Bayonetta styled combat in an open world game with a variety of weapons and customizable character build.

Well, in all fairness. There was one river you couldn't cross that led to another background forest.

It's been even longer, actually. Suddenly,

The Legend of Zelda for the NES. Virtually the entire overworld explorable from the beginning of the game. Same with Zelda II.

@ OP: So yeah, your big idea has been around for about 26 years.

Without loading screens you say? Try out Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy.

Beach, mountain and forest...

No loading screens...

Minus the 3d part this sound a lot like Link's awakening

Re: A concept that should exist in action adventure video games.

Lots of games let you do that. They're generally referred to as "Open World" or "Sandbox" games.

Everyone'll mention Skyrim, which is fun, but by no means the epitome of the genre. There's stuff like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the 2D Zelda games (and even maybe the 3D ones), Dark Souls, the GTA games, inFamous, Arkham City, Just Cause (2, anyways, not played 1)...The list is near-endless.

Re: A concept that should exist in action adventure video games.

I'm a bit skeptical when people mention Skyrim. Although the world looks incredibly epic, the combat doesn't appear to have enough of that "tactile" and "fast-paced" feel for me to call it an "action" game. From what I've seen and heard, it feels like you're punching air.

Re: A concept that should exist in action adventure video games.

But I want to do A overworld design for action adventure game that doesn't give limits to player like the ability to explore forests without a linear path you have to follow, I want the player to actually visit that random mountain in background, let them explore a river without those invisible walls in the way, put 16 dungeon which 6/16 can be completed in any order that are scattered across the very large over world, town that large and deserve with sidequest.

That will be a good action adventure game in my eyes.

Re: A concept that should exist in action adventure video games.

I suppose you could have the world generate itself based on simpler rules such that you can truly have no boundaries.

I would imagine that you'd need infinite memory to stop it being periodic (or similar restrictions), though I have not proven it.

I'm sure there are some examples, but I don't know any.

No I mean a overworld that doesn't have linear pathway and doesn't limit you to going though a linear pathway.

Most open world games are pretty close to this.

You'll always be pretty much limited by space, though.

Xenoblade Chronicles is a nice example too.

Yeah, sounds like a cool idea. If only we had such a game...

So, like Minecraft? That world gets generated as you go, has no load times once you're in the game and has 'dungeons' you can complete in any order.
