This has been one of the best years of gaming in a long time. This holiday lineup was packed with AAA blockbuster titles. With so many great games out like Skyrim, Skyward Sword, Dark Souls, Batman: Arkham city, MWF2, Battlefield 3, I mean there are so many great games that its hard to choose 1 as the best. But if you had to choose 1 as your game of the year which would you choose and why?
Personally I would choose Assassins creed Revelations. I had alot of fun with Skyrim which offered an expansive world to explore, and I also had alot of fun with Dark souls which was seriously a challence (a fun one) and these games were my runners up. But Assassins creed had both of these elements and combined them in a way that made it fun and challenging while being packed with content. As a product AC: R has been polished with laser precision, The game grabs your attention from the very beginning to the very end and even after you have finished the game and completed the loads of extra stuff to do, you still have an online multiplayer which gives the game lasting value which will last the rest of the year and beyond with a Call of duty like upgrade system. Combat has reached its pinnicle in ACR and the mocam technology brings the production values of this game to a true AAA Blockbuster game.
Assassins Creed Revelations= game of the year.
Whats yours?
Runnerss up:
Dark Souls
Skyrim
Skyward Sword
Edit: When I made this thread I was about halfway through SS which is why I only listed it as a runner up. Now that I've finished and analyzed it I am now happy to announce
Skyward Sword
Now Trumps Assassins Creed as my GOTY, And not just because I'm a zelda fan, but because it really does offer the most entertainment as a product. Despite a few minor hickups, This game is EPIC and every bit as fun as I had imagined it would be. I dont want to spoil anything for people who havn't had a chance to play it yet but I can say its safe to set your expectations high because they will be met and even surpassed.
Skyward Sword= Best Zelda game Ever and GOTY.
hahaha

So far for me it's Dark Souls. Excellent combat, excellent level design, excellent sound, excellent aesthetics, loads of replay value, a fair amount of challenge. You couldn't ask for more out of an action-adventure game.

Couldn't agree more. Darks souls was my 2nd choice, its a solid, solid game. The only thing that made me pick AC over it is the Fun Factor. Darks souls can get a tad frustrating at times and the amount of grinding you have to do to (get yourself prepared to) progress can be rediculous sometimes. Assassins Creed is pure entertainment which is the only reason I placed it over dark souls.
Howbout some runners up?
After a while I may tally up the votes or something and maybe I'll give runners up like half a point each or something so that at the end we can see which game is getting the most attention. If I feel up to it.....

Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes close; it's one of the closest things to an actual role-playing experience in the recent history of big-budget, mainstream blockbusters, but a few flaws keep it from being what it could have been (Such as repetitive finishing animations, no melee weapons, and later on, a broken leveling system (What I mean by "later on" is that early on in the game when you're low-level it's pretty balanced and you can branch off into different areas; what they should've done was either implement more skills and features or make it take longer to level up)).
I haven't much say in this because I haven't played a lot of the big name titles this year but my personal GOTY 2011 is Total War Shogun 2. Dark Souls, Deus Ex: HR and Saint's Row 3 are the games keeping me from naming a GOTY this year.
Had Skyrim been developed initially for PC it would easily be my first choice for GOTY but that interface is just too awful. That, unbalanced destruction magic and scaling all make the game loose serious points that it's awesome setting and beautiful environments can't make up for.
I know this sounds cliched consider the site we're on, but Skyward Sword floored me and exceeded all expectations. I was so skeptical going in, but do happy coming out. It's a perfect refinement of 3D Zelda.
Portal 2, of course. Skyrim will prolly get a lot of nominations for being so big and pretty. Skyward Sword might also be a good choice. My vote will always and forever go to Portal 2.
I guess I'd go with Dead Space 2.
That game was just way too up my ally for it to not be my best game of 2011.
A little dissapointed both this and DS 1 were shunned at all GOTY considerations.
Uncharted 3 was amazing, and is definitely my first runner up. But it just wan't as good as 2, and that was a little disappointing. Dead Space 2 was actually an all around improvement.
While i'm really loving MW3's spec ops and singleplayer, it doesn't have the greatest multiplayer. that's pretty much the only reason its a runner up and not actually a consideration.
My other runners up would be Dark Souls and Catherine.
I haven't played Skyward Sword or Dark Souls, but they might've been pretty close contenders. Skyrim is pretty good, but it doesn't deserve to be in the top three of any list.
1-Dark souls
One of the best games I've ever played.Awesome exploration, overpowered bosses, amazing level designs, beautiful graphics(specially the light effects),dynamic and challenging combat,i could name many other reasons.it's basically the best rpg i've yet to play.
2-Skyrim
Well,I 0nly played it in my friend's house, and only wasted around 7 hours on it(which is nothing for what it offers),but I can already say that this is a masterpiece. It has an absolutely epic feeling, you really feel like you're in the medieval skyrim, and the overworld is easily the best one ever made. It's hard to explain everything I like about this game, and can't wait to own a copy of my own.
3-Portal 2
The short campaign is the only con I can find.Puzzles have never been this fun,It takes everything that made portal so great and puts it in an other level. It has a really mysterious backstory and awesome sound effect/musics.But at the end I did feel it lacked something, and if I had played other games I was interested this year,I don't think this would be in my list. But it remains an awesome game that everyone should try.
I still have to play Skyward Sword, will get it at Christmas.i feel that I'll love it.
I still haven't gotten Skyward Sword, but I'm sure it'd be up there for GOTY
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Till I get my hands on SS, this is the GOTY. I've played a lot of games this year, but I already clocked in over 50+ hours on it, with two different files. I can't say that for any game that has come out this year. The graphics are pretty, the world is HUGE, the music is a masterpiece, everything I really look for in a game. Sure it has many bugs, but I don't mind any of them really.
Runner ups
Dead Space 2
A huge improvement from the first one. I really enjoyed my time with this game, it's not easy, and it's not hard, it has the perfect balance of difficulty.
Dark Souls
I ♥♥♥♥ing love this game. I love that it's one huge world, unlike Demon's Souls. Whenever I died, I knew it was my fault, I learned from my mistakes. This is a very challenging game
Catherine
Another difficult game!!!! I choose this because of how original it was, and I loved the story. Not much to write on my runner ups, this is just a fantastic game
I'm loving Skyward Sword. It's absolutly fantastic. I got a chance to try Arkham City but I can't say I'm into it... Also can I just say I laughed so hard when I saw that you called it MWF2 lmao TWO! SO TRUE!
-It's better than the former GOTY Madden 11
-Tons of replay value
-Thousands of hours of gameplay
-Fun offline and online multiplayer
-It's a ♥♥♥♥ing Football game
Duke Nukem Forever. It was the best game of the year, maybe even the best of the decade. It had amazing graphics, a consistent feel during gameplay, and was hilarious. The best part of DNF was it was classy in it's depiction of women as people as opposed to big-breasted bimbos.
