The thing on the right is definitely a shortsword, though. It doesn't look two feet long at all?

Is that a closed Oblivion Gate in the background? It would be a nice touch if you came across those on your adventure.
also here's the video that still is from:
BREAKING A GIANT'S LEG WITH A BATTLE AXE
BRAWLING LIKE A MOTHER♥♥♥♥ER
DECAPITATIONS
somewhere around 40 seconds in it's like you're the GOD OF MAGIC
HOLY ♥♥♥♥ i'm excited for this game
also that thing I was asking about earlier (on the left of the decapitation pic) appears to be a sword. let it be made of chitin oh please oh please can it be made of chitin

Hey Oblivion playing fags
Is it worth it to play as a caster? Im thinking of going all out magic in Skyrim, since the "dual weilding" aspect looks pretty badass. Im kinda sick of being an armored badass after Dark Souls, so I wanna try something different.
Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Buggier than a lollipop in an antfarm
Magic looks totally revamped in Skyrim. Spells aren't just throwing fireballs at enemies anymore--you can set runes on the ground that inflict elemental damage, "flamethrower" type spells for your hands that can effect the environment (fire sets walls on fire, frost freezes), and a bunch of other stuff. Of course, that's just destruction. There's also conjuration for summoning creatures and weapons, restoration for healing and buffs, alteration for shields and a bunch of other neat stuff like water walking and detect life, as well as illusion for invisibility spells and night vision.
I really want to play a magic user just to see what it's like, but the combat looks way too badass not to try out. And the new Orcs look awesome. My first playthrough will be a 2 handed weapon using Orc, followed by a magic user, possibly a Dark Elf or an Argonian.

Straight mages can be very powerful characters providing you focus on the right areas of magic, it is also worth it to invest some experience into armor and some sort of weapon so that way you aren't completely defenseless if you end up in a situation where you can't use magic or your enemy can reflect spells. Other than that, have fun with it and make a few "blow everything up" spells to throw at the random bandit.
Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Buggier than a lollipop in an antfarm
Honestly, I've never played all-out mage in Morrowind or Oblivion. It seemed too much of a hassle, and I like whacking things.
The magic system in Skyrim DOES look really good, though. It seems worth it... And you can take advantage of some things (oil catches on fire now, I think? Awesome.) that you couldn't before. For kicks, I'd say try doing a run where you only raise magicka on level-up. Insane glass cannon!

Thoughts?
Playing a pure mage in Oblivion is viable and pretty fun in my opinion, if only to get away from the dull heavy armor sword and shield kind of fighter.
I actually had the most fun playing an archer in Oblivion but that's neither here nor there.
In Oblivion playing a caster is definitely worth it, at first you might not be the greatest but later on you have all the tools to win at everything.
It's a shame that in Morrowind you really couldn't play a pure Mage without dying all the time. Fighters were incredibly over powered and Mages severely underpowered.
Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Buggier than a lollipop in an antfarm
Ever since I heard of Skyrim coming I completely put it out of my mind until recently and didn't even think much about it at all until the last couple days despite loving Morrowind and Oblivion (and daggerfall too)
Then just now I realized I am actually excited for this game.
Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Buggier than a lollipop in an antfarm
Siphoning a copy of Skyrim at 3MB/s.
I'll be trying it out soon. Then judging if it is worth my investment (I wasn't that fond of either Oblivion or Fallout 3. Entertaining to some extent, but too repetitive).

Should I go for a High Elf, since they're the "magic race"?
High Elves are snooty tightwads and they look like they're from the Simpsons. Roll a Breton. Dunmer (dark elves) are a pretty well balanced race (as well as being a badass race in general, lore-wise) and do reasonably well in hybrid classes.
In all seriousness though, I usually stayed away from High Elves because of their racial weaknesses. In the past two games they have had a natural weakness to all types of magic making them outstandingly flimsy in combat. Their increased magicka doesn't really make up for it.
