The PC version having suddenly become playable, Pinkie Pie began putting serious playtime into Skyrim. While she enjoys the game now that it doesn't suffer from debilitating performance issues (it only took five patches from Bethesda and one from Nvidia), playing it has made Pinkie Pie realize just how she doesn't like about it.

Melee combat still feels floaty. Unless Pinkie Pie is using a bow, it never feels like she's have an impact on what she hits. This is most evident when fighting dragons, when she pays more attention to the creature's health bar than to the creature itself.

The manner in which the NPCs talk is... eh. It may actually be a step down from Oblivion, since none of the non-player characters seem particularly interested in what they're saying. Some idle animation is always running, making them stare off in the other direction or slouch against a wall. This becomes most evident in the Thieves Guild questline, when one of the main characters, Karliah, manages to look and sound bored, despite having saved your life and confronting the man who murdered her love more than two decades before.

It surprises Pinkie Pie that Oblivion's story is more interesting and involving. That's probably because the NPCs stare at you like their life depends on it, forcing you to stay interested, lest they leap out of the screen and eat your soul.

Which brings Pinkie Pie to another point: the factions. None of the factions feel particularly developed or interesting. The College of Winterhold questline advances as though it has no concept of pacing, propelling you to the rank of Archmage before you can zip up your pants, while never providing any closure or incentive to pay attention. The Mage's Guild in Oblivion felt far more involving, especially when you have to work to be accepted into whatever position you come to. And when you become Archmage, it happened only after enduring a satisfying storyline (with a disappointing final boss).

The Thieves Guild also suffers, and lacks the creativity of Oblivion. No longer are there any intense sneaks through a castle full of guards to plant a ring in a noblewoman's pocket. Instead, there is grinding. Grinding. You literally have to complete the same set of quests over and over to fully complete the Thieves Guild storyline. And the story itself is far from satisfying. Unlike Oblivion, where the missions rise in their danger till you're at last breaking into Imperial City and stealing an Elder Scroll, the story ends with an unsatisfying boss fight.

And more grinding.

Pinkie Pie liked the Dark Brotherhood. No problems.

The game's biggest flaw is its leveling system. Unlike Oblivion, where the player was free to jump back and forth between any class they're proficient with, Skyrim is railroaded. Leveling up your attributes doesn't actually contribute to your skill with them. Only perks affect how your character plays. And since there are 251 perks (at Pinkie Pie's last count, but she does not math well), yet only 81 perk points granted, it's impossible to effectively multiclass. Thankfully, Pinkie Pie was able to install a mod that undid this stupid gameplay choice, so she is capable of jumping between stealth, magic, and melee.

In short, Pinkie Pie prefers Oblivion for everything but its world and its combat.
I agree with you, Pinkie Pie (btw, I love how you refer to yourself in third person! xD Cute!)

Now, don't get me wrong, there are things about Skyrim that I think surpasses Oblivion, but there were problems I had with it:

#1- The death animations. In Oblivion, a bandit would slump over realistically, but in Skyrim, they would just topple lover like they just gained a sudden case of rigor mortis the moment they died.

#2- Argonians and Khajiits no longer have that raspy voice they had in Oblivion. I find that really jarring. They sound like humans, practically!

#3- Character Creation isn't as customable as Oblivion's. You're given a set of preselected faces and are given a few options here and there.

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Buggier than a lollipop in an antfarm

So, anybody else having freaky encounters with seemingly harmless NPCs? I've had a couple recently.

First, I was spending the night at Riften and noticed some majorly anti-Dunmer book was sitting on the nightstand. I threw it in the fireplace, with Iona shouting "What do you think you're doing!?" (racist housecarl).
I went to sleep, and woke up to find Iona standing by my bed, staring at me intently.
"Honor to see you again, my Thane!" she declared. I tried to get out of the house as soon as I could, but Iona seriously kept blocking me by the bed, saying "I am your sword and your shield."
...Divines only know what she had planned if I'd been unable to escape.

The second was this evening. I was heading to Breezehome, when I walked past Braith, who angrily told me that she wasn't afraid of me. Sighing, I opened the door to my house, thinking about what kind of young woman Braith will grow up to be.
As I entered Breezehome, I expected a friendly "Hello, my love," from Lydia, but no, little Braith followed me, shouting "Boys! Dogs! Elders! THERE'S NOBODY I WON'T FIGHT!!!"
I jumped into a chair, Lydia stared at me ("Back from some adventure I bet! )", and Braith, sure that she had made her point, left my home like a boss.

Frickin' Nords.

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Buggier than a lollipop in an antfarm

Recently I have enjoyed the fact that Lydia sits in my bedroom in my house all day.

While my wife Brelyn (the College of Winterhold girl. YAY COLLEGE GIRLS lol) simply sleeps in the guest bedroom.

Sometimes I think the two of them MUST be sharing that room or something, because I don't get the Lover's Comfort perk... And I'm not a werewolf.

Or, rather, last time I was home I wasn't xD Now I am. Bwahahha.

So anyways I was bored and at home and I'm like "Imma use a frost spell on my wife"

The moment I do she turns around and: "PREPARE TO DIE!" she screams, summoning a flame atronach and sending fireballs at me like mad.

In the explosions I die and end up watching her burn my body.

The other amazingly great thing was when I did the same to Lydia and she pulls out... A STAFF OF FLAMES. SHE NEVER HAD THAT UNTIL THAT MOMENT. HOW DID SHE GET IT?

As long as the DLC adds a toggle function for cinematic deaths I'll be happy lolol, they are really distracting and occasionally put you in pretty bad positions.

Hopefully they'll put some more cool stuff in there though. New weapon types (as well as more conjured weapons) would be sweet.

Someone kills you

You drop your weapon

They then proceed to insult you for dropping your litter.

Actually, I usually get a "Wait... I know you!" whenever a guard kills me.

^ Sometimes I get the normal guard lines. Like once I had a map marker added because he was telling me about some cave.

Just noticed this.

It was good, sure.

But try this

1) Do civil war quests first, side with the Stormcloaks
2) Take Solitude
3) Start Dark Brotherhood quests
4) Try to say that there's nothing wrong with them later.

It's so nice for the Emperor to dine in Stormcloak-owned Solitude, surrounded by his Oculatus soldiers.

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Buggier than a lollipop in an antfarm

When I first played this I picked a Redguard because I thought it would be a lot of fun killing ppl with swords and axes and what not. But I realize it's a lot more fun using the bow and magic. Well to me at least. I will play it again but actually use someone who is good for using magic.

As for me I prefer Skyrim to Oblivion. Maybe it's because I never played Oblivion just watched ppl play.

oh man, so happy I'm not the only one who thinks their huge cocks

I didn't know anything about the world before playing the game, but the arrogant thalmor quickly earned my ire after a roadside encounter where they tried to proclaim me a heretic. Needless to say, I slaughtered them like dogs, stole all their goods and left their corpses for the wolves.

And I've been against them ever since.

Plus the Empire is just cool. General Tullius is a very respectable man, while Ulfric is just a huge power hungry ♥♥♥♥.

I reckon Ulfric's main reason for starting the civil war was to gain power himself.

Besides, if the Stormcloaks win, then the Empire is further weakened and the Dominion could just invade Skyrim anyway. As many pro-Empire NPCs say.
