What is your favorite mainstreme final fantasy game?

the rules are simple: what is it, and explain why.

well I liked 6 because of its most excellent plot and character development. FF6 is what most consider to be the best plot and depth, though most gamers go towards the over-rated FF7 because it had the following factors to its addvantage: it was their first FF, it had superior graphics, there was advertising for it, and most of all... they've played it.


proof I'm hardcore-oldschool...

For me it was Final Fantasy 9. The characters intrigued me, and it went back to its roots, with the medival style, the airships, and character design. The story was immersive and the graphics were one of the best on the Playstation I would say, and the cinema scenes were great. Though I would have rather had Kuja been my final villain, rather than turning good, and dealing with some force from beyond, who had no introduction until then in Necron. Still ya gotta take the bad with good, and vice versa.

FF2.

Unlike most PRG players, I only care about gameplay. Especailly seeing as I've never actually played RPG i tought had a good story other than KOTOR.

I have only tried number ten so i voted for that one...I really did not like the game untill i got a bit out in the game and then i got intersstig. Or it was not the gameplay that was fun it was the story that made me play on...

My order goes:
FFIX
FFVIII
FFX
(X-2 would go here, along with XI)
FFVII
And it starts to get blury from there.
To Explain: FFIX: I love how it had a goofy kind of humorous feel to it, and how it got back to its roots, as said above. The only problem I personally had with it is that the character devolpment on the first half of the game is extraordinary and at the rate it was going at, would beat VI's. But then the 2nd half came, and all but a few character's devolpment went down to a trickle. I liked how it had so many side quest and those events that happened while in the middle of a town with other party memebers.
FFVIII:Even though FFX was my first FF 2 years ago, I consider this my first for some reason...I have a very special attatchment to it, love the story, and stopped playing it for a couple of months when I got near the end, because I didn't want it to ever end. I loved how you had so much freedom, and how sidequests were plentyful and evenly spaced.
X: My true first FF, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't what I expected in any aspects. I liked the colorful scheme and the moving plot. *shudders when he thinks of laughing scene*

BTW: Last time this poll was put up, FFIX won. I have a feeling that most Zelda players tend to like IX the most.

My list.

FF1: I loved it. It was a classic, and I got much joy from it. (the FFO version)

FF4: I like the story, characters and gameplay. What else is there to say?

FF7: I don't see why people think its overated. But what ever. I thought this game had great characters, and story. As well as gameplay.

Those are my top 3 in no order.

The only FF games worth playing at all are FF 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9. And I'm not so sure about 4 and 5.

FF7 also happens to be the most horribly overrated game of all time... It's still good, but it's not the second coming of christ or anything, as many of it's fans would have you believe.

My favorite Final Fantasy is definatly 8. I've besten some 24 times and I still play even to this day. As for my other favorites 6 is definatly my second choice, followed by 10.

And 7 is hugly overrated. Granted it was the first Final Fantasy I played but still it isnt the best Final Fantasy.

My favourite is number 9. And it always will be. I love the story and the characters and basically everything about it. I don't mind the others, but i agree that number 7 is a little overrated.

VI is hands down the best. Great story, great gameplay, huge character selection... just awesome.

Was VII that overrated? VII for PSX was what Zelda: OoT was for the N64. VII was a great game, but certainly not perfect. I wasn't too fond of the "equal oppertunity" materia system.

I thought 10 sucked. All style, no substance.

I say that for just about every 3D FF. Sometime between 6 and 7 I think Square just went "eh, forget the gameplay."

Substitute "Gameplay" with "quality" and you'll be right

The only reason 7, 9, and arguably 8 were good was because they hadn't broken the habits yet


Actually, I think that 10 had the best battle system of them all, so far. To bad it was marred by bad story, mediocre music, horrible, horrible characters, and bad voice acting.

imo in most fantasy games I prefer no voice acting at all.

I chose 9, I disliked 8, and 7 was ok, never wanted to finish it though. 10 was fun for a while, but same reason as LoS said, I didnt want to finish it. I liked 9's 4 person party system better than the average 3, but 10's party system was a neat idea as well.

I hated all the 3D ff games really. I never really pay any mind to the story when I'm playing any game (including RPGs). For me, in order to be a good game, it simply has to be fun to play. Not watch or read.

In that case, why play FF games at all? They would all suck. FF6 wasn't exactly a marvel of gameplay or anything, it was just another rendition of the already tired old turn-based menu system.

Exception being FFT, and only if you enjoyed the character building aspects.

alas, one could argue otherwise it had more plot development to it, more substance and more strategy than most others. Along with graphics and sound that litterally pushed the SNES to its limits...
FF6 also had a widery aray of characters than any other main stream FF as well. FF6 was also the beggining of the equiping system wheer objects where equiped to extract spells/abilities, one the whole FF6 was revolutionary...

and its villian was mroe involved than others as well as being more understandable and believeable, why has not a man who is deranged as Kefka appeared in any other FF? because there can be no otehr, his gleeful amorality along with his "humor" make him more than twisted, he's seriously bent and we all love him because of that.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy IX are the best in my eyes.

Tactics offered the most in terms of gameplay and the story was pretty good, and IX had the best music and story of them all, in my opinion. I've said it many a time before; I cried at the ending of IX, I thought it was that good. Magnificent game.

The rest are... bleh.
I would consider FFVI to be an exception from the "bleh" category, though.
