Revolution/N5

I was just searching the web, and I came across news about the Revolution, a new Nintendo system, in the same family as N64 and Gamecube. Anyone else heard of this, because its news to me.

Go to that if you want to see concept art. It sounds awesome, though its not coming out until 2006.

I'm sorry if everyone already knows this, I sure didn't. ^^;

Re: Revolution/N5

No one knows anything about the specifics of the console at all. Anythign anymore is just the same old picture of the Nexus or someone finally reading that 'that Nitendo's next console will be a revolution'.

The codename 'Revolution' has been around since E3 with no concrete information. The only remotely detailed idea that anyonr has about the console is that Nitendo feels that graphics aren't going to be the driving force in the upcoming round of consoles.

And shouldn't it be a 2005 release? If they are to be right behind Microsoft, that is... early 2006...

The Microsoft console is all anyone knows anything about, between leaked spec sheets and the developer kit apparently being a tinkered-with Power Mac. Also there is the Elder Scrolls 4. Sony comes in at a second though, having ES 4 being developed for PS3 eventually also, and a 'screenshot' of a PS3 soccer game at a recent conference.

Nintendo on the other hand has been extremely tight-lipped.

Re: Revolution/N5

I'm pretty sure that Sony and/or Microsoft will reveal their consoles at E3 2005, but it's hard to say for sure now, with the possibility of Sony and Microsoft both pushing their launch dates back into 2006. Even so, hyping them up even years before their release could prove to be a successful strategy for gaining initial launch sales.

Meanwhile, Nintendo seems to be bent on a 2006 date now, with it seemingly pushing the new Mario and Zelda at E3 2005. What we do "know" about the Revolution, however, is that it will be something different. It will still be a home console, but one like we've never seen before, or something. I'm guessing that it will have a different control method than the competitors, possibly using gyroscopes as IGN speculated, because it makes the most sense; it's a relatively new control method, but not such a huge departure as to change gameplay too much from what gamers consider to be the "standard."

Of course, this poses problems - will third parties now not be able to port their software to Nintendo's? Will this new "Revolution" be easy to program for, and not too daunting to work with for developers? Will it be cheap? Such things I'm quite sure Nintendo has considered, so I'm convinced that they've either made the console extremely appealing to third party developers, or they've dug themselves into that hole of theirs even deeper, and are going to concentrate solely on first party titles.

On a side note, while Nintendo claims that graphics and audio technology will not matter as much as it does today when selling a console and its software, they will not be left behind with the Revolution. According to heresay and rumour (not the best to go on, but it's all we've got at this point), Nintendo's console will be more than able to keep up with the other two giants, technology-wise. I'm hoping these are true, because the average gamer tends to be incredibly shallow when it comes to innovation - they want quality, and a familiarity. They're much more likely to jump on Sony's or Microsoft's bandwagons if they see the same old types of games that they know and love, rather than Nintendo's new, daring, and risky descent into the realm of difference.
