Did you have any mods installed prior to updating?

That once happened to me when I had a terribly outdated texture pack on when I updated a while ago. Got rid of the texture pack and it started working again.

No. I only have texture packs installed. Okay I will trying removing all of my texture packs and try again.

The problem you are having is typically due to an out of date texture pack or mod. Try going to the launcher, hit options and "Force Update"

All righty, I reckon it's time for me to start a new world for the latest update (I've got so many worlds now, heh - I tend to start a new world every time Mojang releases a new update, in addition to the random seeds I like to try out).

Edit: You may already have noticed this, but there's a new skin in the mob folder:



It's titled "silverfish.png." It's not in the game yet - the skin has just been added as a teaser for now, so I'd say it's likely to be a new mob for 1.8. Now, it could be a silver-coloured fish, or an insect silverfish:



If it is indeed the insect rather than the fish, that could have some potentially interesting gameplay consequences. You see, silverfish are known for being household nuisances, due to their tendency to destroy paper and wood-based materials...

A new block or a reskin of cobble?:



Some of them look mossy, so that adds to the cobble reskin theory, but some are cracked while others arent... which might mean new functionality for cobble? Normal, cracked, mossy?

We really need a mob that can destroy [cobble]stone. Wood is already too vulnerable. It blows up easier than stone, can be set on fire, and is rarer.

D000000d I am now more excited than ever for the next major update. It's going to be game changing.

Its a picture that Jens (Programer/Game dev at Mojang) posted on Google+. And duuuuuude, giant mushrooms would be awesome.

well actually i think they already planed to add them

but yeah they would be cool, sorta be like trees, except with mushrooms and they could probably grow almost anywhere, even naturally in the nether. that would be cool

also, are they confirming that they will be adding NPCs in the next update, cause... awesome. maybe they will take the Terreria approach to NPCs

Orbs would be okay if all they did was increase your life by 1 heart and double how long each tool lasted.

but they could make players have to level up to get access to better tools and weapons, but i imagine that that would only be in the "adventure mode". actually thats a great idea, makes the game more interesting.
also the Terreria approach would be that you build a house for them and they come and live there, while also offering things to the player for a price. they could have alot of potential, like if they make a blacksmith NPC and you made an anvil for him he could make stronger swords and tools.

Loving the new update. I followed a guide on YouTube to make a piston door. Made some changed though. I hid the wiring and I replaced the lever with a pressure plate. Then added inverters and repeaters to each side. When those repeaters are set to the last setting, you have just enough time to make it through the doorway!

I've made a hidden piston room, a piston man-crusher and a piston-powered obsidian factory.
