i want a new mario, for gamecube. its really cool. but beware of long explanations below...
*Story- upon returning from Isle delfino, mario is flabbergasted to see the Mushroom kingdom overrun with bad guys. It seems that 12 of Bowser's henchmen took the land while mario was away.
These 12 took each region of the kingdom
1. Donut Plains
2. Vanilla Dome
3. Fire Mountain
4. Ice Archipelago
5. Rocky Ridge
6. Soda Lake
7. Forest of Illusions
10. Butter Bridge
11. Star Road
12. Valley of Bowser
Peach tells Mario to restore the land, but just as she does, bam! that Magician dude from Yoshi's Island takes her to bowser's castle. You must rid the land of the badguys and rescue the Princess
Elements: First i want to it to boast really strong polygonal characters, the catch is i want it 2D. Yes you heard me, i want a polygonal side scroller. Next, i want to abandon the searching for whole stars. He must just get through the level. Each region is broken down into 8 areas (a la Super Mario world). Half way through each region is a ghost house (yay). But at the end of the house, you must beat a boss ghost. Also, there are several ways to beat the level that can bring you to different secret areas or pipes to cut your journey down. Another emphasis is the jumping skills that he learned. There are many platforms in each level that he must cross. Some of you may think this is Super Mario World, but one thing i want to get rid of is different suits. Just small mario (1 hit, your dead). But when you get a mushroom you get bigger and you get one more hit. You can also store up to three mushrooms, each time your hit, one will fall from the top of the screen. Another thing is the return of Luigi + more yoshi.
Yeah, the return of Platformers! I think it would be nice to see a Mario game in it's real Platforming perspective, like in Viewtiful Joe. And I would love to see the return of those Donut Plains.
"Reggie Fils-Aime is basically like the devil, except instead of claiming the souls of mortal men, he takes their names, and instead of burning eternally in the dark fires of the underworld, he works at Nintendo."
I donít think it would be accepted well by the gaming public though, it's more of a leap back than a leap forward for the Cube. Maybe if it was on the GBA, of course, without the amazing Cube graphics.
Really nice idea though.

It's not nessecarily a leap back... just a leap sideways, if you will. A different style, neither inferior nor superior.
Of course, the general gaming public (aka complete idiots) would think of it as a step backwards, you're right.
Personally, I've thought for years that they should make a 2D Mario game, for the N64, then when it came out, the GC.

I think that while a 2D Mario game could easily surpass SM64 and SMS, what they really need to do is make a real 3D platformer, with gameplay similar to the retro levels in SMS, only it has to really take advantage of the third dimension; there's no point in 3D if the same thign can be done in 2D.
