All Your Game Are Suprisingly Good
I was in a retro game store the other day, buying Genesis games. There was a buy two get one free thing going on, and I couldn't come up with a third game; that's when I saw Zero Wing on the shelf. I have no clue how it got there seeing how it was Europe only (fortunately its easy to bypass genesis region lockouts),but I picked it up, thinking I'd give it to a friend for Christmas as a joke.Anyway, I popped it in my Genesis today for the heck of it. I sat through the infamous opening and finally started the first level. That's when it dawned on me...this game really isn't that bad.
The gameplay is a pretty standard side scrolling 2D shooter. However, you also have a tractor beam, which allows you to do Kirby like attacks by sucking in and throwing your enemies, as well as holding them in front of you as shields. I'd also like to note that this is definitely the most forgiving 2D shooter I've ever played. When you die, rather than start at the beginning of the level like most games, you start right where you left off (in fact, the game has started me off ahead of where I was a few times). Furthermore, there are infinite continues, so losing is pretty much impossible.
Granted, its no Gradius, but its still pretty fun. Not to mention its forgiving continue system is perfect for people raised on 3D games who want to get into the shoot em up genre. Anyway, I feel that there is a lot more to this game than an overdone meme, and it didn't deserve to be rated the 7th worst game of all time by GT.
