Doesn't add up to me.
This is the equivalent to getting pissed off when Nintendo reveals the inevitable third "superized" version of Pokemon in a generation.

You heard it here, folks.
The problem is that most new games may not be reverse compatible with the older models and thus you would have to dish out another 200 bucks to get the "slightly more enhanced" version in order to play the new games.

This does not bode well for video games. Consoles should have a general lifespan of 10 years before the hardware is updated. Generally by then it enters a completely new generation. Updating a console every year or so and just adding new features which are pretty much useless, and making games which are played exclusively on the new versions alienates players who can't afford to update. Console games should always be playable on all versions of that console.

^ But I stress "only difference is the screen".
If that's true, there is absolutely nothing to get worked up over. I don't see how the screen makes a difference-- I assume they're just going to mess with the resolution somehow like they did when they shrunk the GBA screen to GBA Micro, and changed them throughout the DS's life span.

But if they start making new games which are designed for the higher resolution screen, then they won't be reverse compatible with the original consoles and the old DS consoles will essentially be dead and those who one them will either have to buy into the newer models or just stop collecting on the DS.

I thought the DSi was a step backwards, but this? I didn't think they could sink any lower.
The again everything always ends up worse as soon as you think it couldn't possibly so I guess I should have seen this coming.

Why would they release a new handheld? They don't have any competition in that market.

They sold the 8 bit gameboy and only made minor upgrades to it for YEARS.

Technically, the GBA was way behind the times in terms of what as currently possible on a handheld.

Why did they sell the GB for so long? Because they didn't need to upgrade. They had no threat to thier market share.

The ONLY reason why they even made the DS is because they were afraid of losing the market to the PSP. Look how that battle went.

Unless someone comes out with a handheld, which I doubt will, expect to see the DS to be around for about ten years.

Welcome to the reality of the gaming industry ZU.

But the DSi has bigger screens already than the Lite and the original.
Somehow I don't think they're going to alienate the entire DS consumer base, since that would cost them so much money and PR problems.
Simply "forcing everyone to get the new DS" is something I don't think anybody would be stupid enough to try, especially so soon after the DSi release.

They're not forcing you to do it. They're just doing small things to it so the sales won't ever plateau.

But this is the next generation handheld, with slightly better specs, so in a year from now, Nintendo can drop DS and DS Lite support and only develop for DSi spec systems. And a few years from that, DSii.

It depends. Are they simply expanding the size of the screens or actually increasing the number of pixels on them? The problem is that if they are increasing the resolution, games which are designed to play on the higher resolution won't work on the older DS models because they don't have the required pixel density.

I think they are going down a bad road with this. Personally, I loathe how all the new video game systems are "universal media" centers now. Video games are supposed to be video games, not desktop computers or PDAs.

But again, they shrunk the GBA to GBA Micro. It's apparently noticeable if you look for it.

I agree, but I ironically bought a PSP only because of its media capabilities. Go figure.

This seems like such a pointless change to me. If they're going to change anything, they should bring back the GBA reverse-compatibility.

Re: New DSi Coming With 4" Screen. Nintendo goes Apple Confirmed.

Well, heres the reason why a bigger screen DSi is being made:

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/200...tendo_ds_push/

Well, i think its useless. This is the fourth DS design being made and Nintendo still doesn't focus on the next gen. I have a DS lite, thought it was a pretty good upgrade from the original DS. But then the DSi. and now this. It is getting useless.
I personally love the design of the original DS. Would'ave kept it if it had a brighter light like the DS Lite. But doesn't matter much anyways. I would'ave upgraded to the DSi but didn't since it doesn't have a GBA slot.

I should say something like, "This is why I'm a PSP user now", but considering Sony just pumped out the Go, I think I'll pass.

I personally don't view this as an upgrade at all. We have yet to hear of any changed feature besides the bigger screen, which may but probably will not affect anything but how easy the screen is to look at.

That smells like brand loyalty/non-conformity, which is completely stupid. I love the DS because I love the games that are on it.
The company behind it is just like any other company-- they want money.

Ugh... When I read that article I facepalmed. Its a ****ing video game, not a palm pilot. We don't need, or want digital books and movies on a handheld game console.

This crap just hikes the price, and is completely useless.

And I agree, the DS lite was a great improvement over the DS as it was just a case redesign and upgrade to the back light. But the DSi is just a stupid attempt to make another version of the ****ing Iphone.

Just make a damn video game console that plays ****ing video games!

Sorry about the rant, I just hate this crap.

Bring it back? The DS still has GBA reverse-compatibility. Just don't buy the new versions if you already own a DS unless it's really a brand new handheld with its own library of exclusive games.

Re: New DSi Coming With 4" Screen. Nintendo goes Apple Confirmed.

I honestly don't think that Nintendo is trying to get you to buy a new handheld, but to cater to gamers (like older people) who have yet to experience the DS. It's more like an added option than a completely new system---you know, like a DSi in size XL. And yeah, this may also be due to a push to accommodate digital movies and books, according to some sources. But if you're freaking out about Nintendo making you buy a new handheld, you're most likely not in the system's target audience.

Re: New DSi Coming With 4" Screen. Nintendo goes Apple Confirmed.

I'm with Tonchiki on this one. I see no reason why games would be designed specifically with this system in mind. Firmware in the handheld will probably scale up the graphics, and I doubt there will be any increased resolution.

The lack of GBA compatibility is what's stopping me from potentially upgrading to the DSi, however. I wouldn't mind having a bigger screen, but I'd prefer to also be able to play any GBA advance games that I have on the new screen as well.

Plus, I'd probably sell my old DS Lite if I actually ever upgraded to the DSi, to get some of my money back.

This no different from the numerous versions of the PS3 and it's space.

It's a redesign, not a new handheld. Chill out, losers.
