Borderlands

I haven't yet bought a mainstream shooter game for this generation, particularly because of my experiences with XBOX shooters. I think they left me somewhat jaded about the shooter genre. To me, shooters had been a little bit too samey from the start.

But then, there was Borderlands.

Borderlands, a game by the acclaimed company Gearbox Studios, comes out tomorrow, and I've been hyped for this game ever since. The game claims to play like a shooter, but have skill-building, item-dropping mechanics that make it more of a hybrid between an RPG and a shooter. Enemies have visible health bars and hit points, and on-screen numbers show you how much damage your gun is doing and when you score a critical hit. The game also presents itself in a very cartoony fashion, with a distinctive art style that shows the game doesn't take itself super seriously.

But don't read that crappy synopsis, read IGN's. They explain it better.

Anyway, this game looks like just the right thing for me: a nice, lighthearted shooter with co-op play and RPG elements. I'm definitely picking this game up as soon as I can.

Oh, and did I mention the guns? Apparently, this game is going to have, like, a virtually infinite arsenal of guns.

Re: Borderlands

If I remember right, the game has a library of a few thousand weapon parts, and it randomly throws those parts together to create an infinite number of gun types. I'm definitely giving this a shot.

That's the line that sold me.

One of my friends has it. She complains that the cell shading is ugly (opinion) and it doesn't bring that much new to the table (also opinion). She likes it and calls it a mix of "Halo 3 and Fallout 3". She did say that Mass Effect was better, but that it was still a game worth getting.

Re: Borderlands

I can say that it looks really great, I heard the soundtrack is choice as well. And the bazillion guns thing doesn't hurt, though I have to wonder just how accurate that actually is.

Re: Borderlands

Well I'm pretty sure bazillion isn't a word. Or rather, an actual number.

Supposedly there are around 17 million guns. Most of them most likely being variations of each other.

-This game has absolutely nothing in common with Mass Effect.
-It's nothing like Fallout 3, more like Diablo+Halo.
-Claiming that it's a mix between Halo and Fallout 3 in itself claims that the game brings tons of new material to the table.

Get smarter friends.

From what I've heard so far, the soundtrack is going to be amazing.

...but still. Even ONE million guns, most of them being variations is a ♥♥♥♥load.

Any word on how many core model guns they have?

I don't if it's impressive rather than completely unnecessary. For starters, it would seem as though keeping track of all those guns would be a pain in the ass. And sure, they could throw in a million levels as well, but if they suck, then what's the point?

However, it is an impressive number, that much is certain.

I honestly have no idea. But I imagine it's something a bit more reasonable.

Re: Borderlands

They say that about the guns, because they can randomly generate them, meaning they're almost never ever the same (outside of uber guns.) Anyway, this game looks exactly like Fallout 3, and you know it wouldn't have been made to be what it is if Fallout 3 never existed, but I'm definitely getting it anyway. It looks pretty good.

Just because they share a post-apocalyptic setting doesn't mean it's the exact same game.

Re: Borderlands

Exact is pushing it, but it certainly looks the same but cel-shaded. Open world with guns, quests etc. Sure it's been done before, but it has the same vibe. It's not really a bad thing in my books though, I loved Fallout 3.

...And Fallout 3 looks the same as Mad Max or the first few minutes of WALL-E, except in an interactive medium.

The main thing about Borderlands is how much "Shooter" it has in it. Fallout 3 was more of an RPG with guns, wheras Borderlands is more like Halo with Hit Points, leveling and an inventory screen.

To each his own I guess. Gameplay-wise, I'm pretty sure that this type of thing hasn't been done before. But yeah, setting-wise, Post-Apocalyptic is pretty much post-apocalyptic.

Re: Borderlands

Borderlands is out! Whoo!

Honestly, I'm pressed for cash at the moment, and I'm also desperately trying to save up for Tekken 6 on October 27th, so I won't be able to get this game just yet. But maybe I'll rent it and see how it is.

And damn, an infinite number of guns? At first, I wasn't even hyped about the game because the graphics looked kinda bad. But right after I saw "infinite number of gun combinations", that got me hooked on it.

She wasn't comparing it to Mass Effect, she was telling me to get Mass Effect instead. That I'd have more fun with it then Boarderlands. Sorry if I worded that wrong.

I feel the games it's more like is more of an opinion. And she was trying to explain it's gameplay to me (I being a person who hasn't had much time to play a large genera of games and trying to explain it in terms I would understand). Yes I know I need smarter friends. She's not one of them however.

Re: Borderlands

Wow Sailboat, calm down. I was saying that I liked the game, so that's even less reason to defend it. I see it to be similar to Fallout 3 - matter much? I said it looks great.

Sorry, I guess I just don't have enough people to talk about this game with. Desperate for some discussion.

But yeah, I'm getting it tomorrow, and I can't ♥♥♥♥ing wait.

My prediction: The furries at Deviantart will be all over this thing.

But yeah, as far as the classes go, I think I'll either be going with Mordecai (pictured above) or Lilith (the chick). I dunno, I want to play as something that's not the tank for once.
