The New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread of Great Level Design *CLAPCLAPCLAP*

New trailer here.

If you haven't been following the media blowout that Nintendo has been giving this game in the last few weeks or so, I don't know where you've been, but the game is looking so incredible and like everything New Super Mario Bros. DS should have been.

More videos here.

Completely excited for this game. Whether I play it solo or actually get some of my friends to play with me, it's going to be a blast.

It's gonna be awesome for sure, but the power-ups are generally dissapointing so far (except yoshi).

Why dosen't this game have Super Mario Galaxy's graphics? Honestly, the sprites are good, but I feel a little underwhelmed when a Mario game with superior graphics exists.

FUN FACT: New Super Mario Bros. is an anagram for Bowser Penis Armour.

Just try and play the game now.

Do you appreciate anything? It's a friggin 2-D MARIO GAME. It's suppose to have sprites. Sprites aren't a bad thing, anyway- they look gorgeous. I have no idea what you are complaining about.

Mr. Mander@: ...that's disturbing.

Dosen't mean it can't have 3D imagery.

So 3D > Sprites, no exceptions? (Besides, from what I can tell, it will have 3D effects and stuff in it)

Re: The New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread of Great Level Design *CLAPCLAPCLAP*

The only things I'd like to be better than already shown are the power-ups and the music. I'd like more variety than the same tune we heard in NSMB for the DS. It was definitely uplifting when I heard a few new ones in the trailer that was linked to in the OP.

Other than that, a solid must-have.

Re: The New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread of Great Level Design *CLAPCLAPCLAP*

I was kind of dissapointed that this was Nintendo's big holiday release. After watching some of the gameplay vids and listening to some of Miyamoto's comments, I now think it'll be alright. honestly don't know whether I'll buy it though.

Looks like a good game, but doesn't look anywhere near as difficult as everyone's hyping it up to be--especially with all those ridiculous 1-up opportunities. Typical Mario fare.

Hahaha.

The game is looking pretty impressive, and while it uses sprites, I still think it looks good enough. It has a nice flow to it. I like the penguin suit and the new moves you can pull off, especially the teamwork ones. This is truly a step forward in oldschool Mario platforming, and I might just get this mainly for the multiplayer.

Yes. I definitely will buy this. I'm especially excited about the return of the Koopa Kids. I can't imagine how much fun it's going to be to throw Luigi in a pit of lava. And Yellow Toad too, cuz he could have been replaced with a better character.

Uh, you guys realize that the characters are still 3-d models, right? If anything, they should have been sprites.

And I'm surprised (and disappointed) they didn't replace the Toads with anyone else. I was almost sure they were placeholder characters.

Re: The New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread of Great Level Design *CLAPCLAPCLAP*

I'm not sure, but I think they're still referred to as sprites whether they're 2D or 3D, Tonchiki, though I'm unsure of the exact definition. But, yeah, it's like some people here hadn't realised that they're 3D models, just like in New Super Mario Brothers. I think this style works nicely for Mario, but they're still not the most technically impressive graphics and I think they could have done a better job with them.

As with the Toads (they really should have been replaced), a lot of this game seems almost lazy. I feel that they certainly could have put more effort in. It looks like it's going to be fun, but I'm unsure if it's worth purchasing. Maybe a rental. We're have to see when it comes out.

Since when did lives ever effect the difficulty in a Mario game? Alll that happens when you lose all your lives is you go back to the last save and have to make your way through a few levels all over again, which just adds to the tedium, not the difficulty, seeing as you've already done it. Lives have no effect on the difficulty in a Mario game, it is all down to the level design.

The 1-ups bit was just a parenthetical remark. Lives or no lives, the game (based on the teaser vid) still looks a lot easier than it's been hyped up to be.

*shrugs* I guess we'll see.

I'm pretty sure sprites are exclusively two-dimensional images, even thrown into a 3-d environment. I'm not 100% on that, but that's always, always how I've heard it. I've never heard of people referring to 3-d character models as sprites.
