Wow, I didn't know the Koopa Kids were back in this (I haven't exactly been looking into this game much).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time they were really back was in Superstar Saga, right? (Something tells me I'm wrong, though.)

Are the Koopa Kids Bowser's children, and what games were they in before this? Because I'm pretty sure in Galaxy he only had one son--Bowser Jr.

You're young, aren't you?

The Koopalings predate Bowser Jr. by more than a decade. Their first appearance was in Super Mario Bros. 3 where each had taken over the seven kingdoms and turned the king into an animal with their magic wand. They were the seven main bosses in addition to Bowser. They appeared again in Super Mario World, again as bosses of the seven main worlds before Bowser. They were also prominent in certain Mario cartoons, comics, and spin-off games and RPGs.

Bowser Jr., by contrast, never came on the scene until Super Mario Sunshine just a few years ago.

The fact that the seven Koopalings are back in a major Mario game is a HUGE nostalgiagasm for us old-timey Mario players!

Their last major appearance was Super Mario World (way back in 1991), but they have been in several spin-off games and RPGs; I haven't really kept up with all that so I couldn't tell you for sure.

EDIT:
According to the Mario Wiki, the Koopalings have also appeared in Mario Is Missing!, Yoshi's Safari, Hotel Mario, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. So you were right about Superstar Saga being their last appearance.

Haha, I'm actually not so young (old enough to remember such things if I were into them, I believe) I just have never really been much into Mario. I know the huge Mario games, such as Mario 64, Mario Land (I think this is what it was called, but that seemed so long ago), and Galaxy, but other than that...no.

I know, strange, I don't know how you avoid Mario so effectively in the gaming world, yet I have. ;p

That's funny...it seems the Mario franchise is trying to go back to their old school roots then?

Yep, going back to their roots is precisely the purpose of the two "New" Super Mario Bros. games. And that's why I'm so hyped about them!

To let you in on a little secret, I've avoided a lot of Mario myself lately and am only just now getting back into it.

Basically, I haven't played a single Mario game (except for the Mario Kart ones) later than Super Mario 64. And even that one I only played halfway through nearly a decade ago. The last Mario game I actually beat was Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Back in the day, though, I played SMB1-3 and SMW to death. I've played them so thoroughly that nowadays I could probably navigate those games more skillfully than I can ride a bike.

Anyway, soon I'm planning a big Mario marathon, though, to catch myself up. It will culminate in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

It's Koopalings, not Koopa Kids. The Koopa Kids are Bowser's henchmen in the Mario Party series, the Koopalings are Bowser's kids.

Yeah same here, Rew. I never gave up on Mario but in the later years, he has taken to the back burner a bit. I miss the Koopalings alot. Im glad to see Lemmy Koopa, Larry Koopa, Iggy Koopa, Morton Koopa Jr, Wendy O'Koopa, and the rest of them return. Ludwig Von Koopa forever!

Is any one else both intrigued and terrified of the thought that at some point Bowser forgot to wear a rubber on 8 seperate occasions?

The old bugger tries to get his scaly hands on Peach whenever he can. I doubt he "forgot".

Also, I heard somewhere that Yoshi's "hnnnngh" shound will be absent. Is that true?

The game's music is leaking all over the internet, as are the world themes as the Australian release on the 12th approaches.

Let's try to keep this thread as spoiler free as possible. I already know about the big secret.

Oh, it's pretty amazing alright.
Just make sure you don't go googling "New Super Mario Bros. Wii Secret" like I did.

Well, I searched around, and all I found so far were things pointing to a secret 9th world, which-- don't get me wrong, it's a nice surprise-- isn't totally mindblowing.

Not reading. People should learn to not be so greedy when looking up information on new games coming out, they're called spoilers for a reason.
