Both are pretty stupid. Perhaps console developers should be more like PC developers and have both local and online play, and have them both be highly configurable.

To get rid of something you have to do it in the first place.

How can you have local play on a PC? Sharing a keyboard with other people really wouldn't work.

I'm sorry if this is obvious, but I don't have a PC capable of playing recent games, so I don't know much about it.

Re: The New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread of Great Level Design *CLAPCLAPCLAP*

Local play is much better than online. It should always receive priority. This is why I support Nintendo's general direction. They're a bit misguided by not embracing online as much, but a focus on local play is at least a decent excuse when a lot of games today are losing local multiplayer modes. Hell, even The Conduit, a Wii game, supported online but not local. It's a disgrace.

In this day and age, I shouldn't have to choose one or the other anyway. Regardless of the system or the game, all multiplayer modes should have both local and online capability, with very few exceptions. Again, I'd take local over online any day of the week, but having both would be best.

Its only better if you have the time to get 3 of your friends together at your house. That is next to impossible for me, since none of my friends live close enough to me.

Eh, I don't think it's that cut and dry. For example, split screen can get really annoying, depending on the game.

Fair warning: I am about to defend Waluigi.

Waluigi actually seems to be much more of a cheater than Wario. Wario just brute-forces everything. This is probably just pure fan-nonsense, but Waluigi strikes me as the kind of character that would be more cunning and deceiving to try to win through cheating. Wario's just an idiot (yet apparently not since he created his own game development company).

You know (this doesn't directly have to do with your post), a lot of people ***** about his name. Now, I'm not usually one to say "it's better in Japan", but Waluigi's name in Japan was actually a perfect fit.
To my understanding, it went something like
Luigi = Ruiji
Wa = "bad"
Warui = "someone who is bad"
Waruiji = warui + ruiji = "bad luigi"

In English it's just awkward.

I also have to say that he just plain makes me laugh. Have you seen those intro videos for games like the GameCube Mario sports games (particularly Power Tennis and Golf, the Camelot games)? He and Wario make a hilarious pair. His voice cracks me up too, as does his apparent attitude (which at this point is only revealed through said intro videos and his body movement).
He also kinda looks like the Snidely Whiplash/Dick Dastardly type of villain, which walks a fine line between stupidly cliche and humorous, but I find it humorous.

I dunno, I just like him. The fact that he's so hated makes it even better.
Quote:
(No, **** you. I know the game is in 2D. That has NOTHING to do with his character being 2D. I know you're thinking it. Don't even ****ing type that.)
If you hadn't pointed it out, it never would have crossed my mind.

EDIT: Maybe the cheating thing came from this:

LAN play has been around longer than the console, as a concept, has existed.

Why do you have to share a keyboard? Just use multiple controllers if you're going to play on one machine. Any PC gamer should have a controller anyway.

Do you not have $300 to build a gaming PC with? Believe me, it's worth the investment.

Re: The New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread of Great Level Design *CLAPCLAPCLAP*

I don't like the aesthetics (polygons over sprites, annoying music, rehashed level themes and character designs), but the game play looks like zany fun.

I expect it to sell well due to the halo effect; that is, there are no other worthy games releasing, so . . . do the math.

On Waluigi:

He is a pretty terrible character, but Tonchiki just made me think of something . . .

His name is probably supposed to be Waruigi, but the English translators probably assumed the Japs meant Waluigi. (Recalls A Christmas Story, fa ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra)

There's gotta be a reason that Nintendo aren't supporting online as much as Sony or MS.

Maybe because online play is strictly "Hardcore" territory.

You are wrong. It will sell because of the opposite, because it is a casual game. One that I really want. Heck, even if Halo 4 and GTA5 came out when NSMBW did, I still expect NSMBW to only sell less during the first few weeks/months or so.

Not to mention that they've only shown a few levels, so the level themes might not be rehashed.

Those Thwomps are so. ♥♥♥♥ing. Ugly.

What the ♥♥♥♥?

Galaxy's Thwomps had the best design, and the NSMB/SM64DS ones were nice too. This is just such a massive step back.

In some respects it's basically a Best Of collection. If you have a favorite level in any of the previous entries, chances are there's some variation on it in NSMBWii. Loads of subtle and less subtle references, too. Cannot name specifics, sorry.

Multiplayer co-op should be lots of fun with players of similar skill levels. However, the sweet spot might be three players - with four, it's a bit too hard to keep track of your friends and unwanted deaths are pretty likely to follow. Need more playtime (perhaps with a different set of players) to say for sure.

Seems a lot tougher than the DS game too, thankfully. Should be about on the level of World, difficulty-wise. Seems like they used the super guide as an excuse to put in some more taxing stuff (that, or they remembered that the original was no cakewalk either).

I still don't like the 2.5D style graphics much (would have preferred a Wario Land Shake It style) and it's a pity the map isn't one interconnected world like in SMW. Also, the music (while an improvement over de DS version with some nice remixes) doesn't hold a candle to SMW either. Other than that, though, this could very well place at or near the top of my list of favorite Mario platformers (and thus, favorite games). Bit too early to tell where it ranks exactly, but one thing's for certain: after ending our session, all I've wanted is to play more of it. It's going to be huge (/duh).
I want it.

Official Nintendo Magazine gave the game a 96%.

An official NINTENDO magazine gave a 2D MARIO PLATFORMER a high score?

Omg, totally outta left field.

Yeah, but c'mon, 96?

I was thinking maybe a straight 90 at most. ONM typically doesn't inflate scores, from what I've seen.

I read somewhere that they gave Red Steel a 90%.

Besides, if anything, this shows NSMBW's appeal toward the nostalgic gamers.

Re: The New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread of Great Level Design *CLAPCLAPCLAP*

I'm really starting to get hyped for this game, slowly but surely. When I first saw it E3, I was a bit underwhelmed because it looked like a straight port from the DS game (with four players, of course). Now that I've seen more footage and heard more things about the game, though, I must say that I'm pumped. Greater difficulty? Check. Oozes nostalgia? Check. Mario platforming perfection + multiplayer? Check!

And a 96% from ONM is nothing to sneeze at. They're (usually) pretty tough graders, so I'm looking forward to checking out some of the other reviews for the game to finalize my purchase.
