Did Mario Die In The End of Super Mario Galaxy?

I beat Super Mario Galaxy a few years ago, and went back to replay it recently, being excited for the sequel coming out. I have to admit, I was a bit confused by the ending, seeing it another time.

In the end, did Mario, Peach, Bowser, etc all die as the universe collapsed, and the Lumas simply create new versions of all of them with their memories intact? Or did they somehow recreate the universe around Mario and company? And if the latter is correct, how does the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom know enough of Mario's accomplishments to throw a party in the end?

Any thoughts?

I know that Bowser definitely should have. He got caught smack in the middle of a supernova.

Bowser's been burnt in lava, impaled, fallen incredible distances, etc. Even though I'm sure he COULD have survived it, I wasn't sure if by showing him blow up, and showing Peach being pulled away from Mario, and Luma escaping Mario as he flew into the vortex was all implying that they were destroyed along with the rest of the universe.

They all had plenty of extra lives left, obviously.

No, wait, it's a Mario game.

It's one plot point. A simple characteristic that would only define whether Nintendo wanted their ending to be more gritty, or fun and simple as past titles were. The question is whether or not they were attempting to strike a serious tone in their epic ending.

I think that when the Lumas recreated/rearranged the universe, they also saved Bowser.

This is like asking if Wiley Coyote dies when he blows himself up.

Except that I believe you were supposed to take the ending of the game a bit more seriously than a Looney Tunes cartoon.

Mario is inmortal.

The star of Bowser's galaxy collapses and then becomes a black hole, which consumes all, so yes, they do die, but I think they were celebrating because the galaxies were reborn, and not actually because Mario beat Bowser, though I guess it could be both.

I'm asking whether they died and were reborn, or whatever, or whether everyone was just magically saved at the end.

That's why Rosalina rambles on about rebirth and meanwhile you can hear baby wails in the background. They weren't "saved" from the black hole. They were just... reborn, after it.

Thank you for agreeing it's a possibility. I don't think it's beyond the Super Mario series for something like this.

Also, if Mario did Die in Super Mario Galaxy, then Nintendo could still make Mario games. There's no such thing as Cannon in Mario.
